Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Some key aspects of Netflix's culture that help it achieve results include hiring smartly so every position has stars, focusing on attitude over just aptitude, and having a strict policy against peacocks, whiners, and jerks.

Google's Just Not That Into You: Understanding Core Updates & Search IntentLily Ray
1. Core updates from Google periodically change how its algorithms assess and rank websites and pages. This can impact rankings through shifts in user intent, site quality issues being caught up to, world events influencing queries, and overhauls to search like the E-A-T framework.
2. There are many possible user intents beyond just transactional, navigational and informational. Identifying intent shifts is important during core updates. Sites may need to optimize for new intents through different content types and sections.
3. Responding effectively to core updates requires analyzing "before and after" data to understand changes, identifying new intents or page types, and ensuring content matches appropriate intents across video, images, knowledge graphs and more.

1. Muistoja menneiltä ajoilta
Luomuksen kokoelmissa on paljon eri-ikäisiä fossiileja.
I bästa fall
Relics from days past
The collections of the Finnish Museum of Natural History, Luomus, feature
fossils of various ages. Among the youngest are the remains of animals and
plants from the last ice age. If the fossils were buried in favourable conditions
and are of suitable age, they can be used in radiocarbon dating or protein
isolation. Ideally, fossils may even contain DNA.

Ihminen viimeisteli arovisentin kohtalon
esimerkki tapauksesta, jossa nykyihmisen aiheuttama metsästyspaine koitui lopulta lajin
kohtaloksi. Viimeaikaisten tutkimusten mukaan jääkauden lopun voimakkaat ilmaston
ja ympäristöjen muutokset todennäköisesti ajoivat arovisentit pieniin erillisiin ryh-
miin, jotka eivät pitemmän päälle kestäneet metsästyspainetta. Viimeiset arovisentit
elivät radiohiiliajoitusten perusteella Siperiassa noin 9000 – 8000 vuotta sitten.
Humans finished off the steppe wisent
The steppe wisent was the most common and widely dispersed bison species at the end
of the Ice Age, some 500,000–10,000 years ago. It could be found throughout Europe and
across the whole of northern Eurasia up to Alaska. It was slightly larger than the modern
bison, with notably larger, curvy horns. These animals grazed mainly in a steppe-like
landscape and ate a variety of plants, mainly grass.
According to Juha Saarinen, DPhil (palaeontology), the steppe wisent is a clear
example of a species unable to withstand the pressure of hunting by modern humans.
Recent research suggests that the dramatic climatic and environmental changes at the
end of the Ice Age probably drove the steppe wisent to form small separate groups that,
in the long run, could not survive the pressure from human hunting. Radiocarbon dating
shows that the last steppe wisents lived in Siberia about 9,000 – 8,000 years ago.
Susi sopeutuu – ihminen rajoittaa
Suomessa susi on erittäin uhanalainen.
The wolf adapts but is limited by humans
The wolf thrives in various kinds of environments from scrubland to forests and treeless
tundra. During the Ice Age, it already preyed on large and medium-sized herbivores,
such as deer, elks and wisents.
After the fox, the wolf is the second most widely-spread canid in the world. If humans
did not control the wolf population through hunting and persecution, it would grow
and extend over larger areas. The wolf’s existence is unlikely to be threatened by global
warming. In Finland, it is, however, critically endangered.
redan under istiden.
heller vargens existens. I Finland är vargen starkt hotad.

Isotooppikoostumus
Jään happi- ja vetyisotoopit kertovat ilmaston lämpötilavaihteluista.
Hiilen isotooppikoostumuksen avulla voidaan selvittää mm. kasvien
yhteyttämisen ja syvien merivirtojen vaikutusta ilmakehän hiilidioksidi-
pitoisuuteen.
Isotopic composition
The isotopic compositions of oxygen and hydrogen reveal atmospheric
temperature variations, whereas carbon isotopes constrain the influences
of photosynthesis and deep ocean currents on the concentrations
of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Rikkilaskeumat
Tulivuorten rikkipäästöt muodostavat ilmakehässä rikkihappo-
aerosolia, joka estää tehokkaasti auringonsäteilyn pääsyn maan-
pinnalle. Ilmakehän rikkihappo päätyy maahan happosateiden
mukana. Suuret tulivuorenpurkaukset havaitaan jääkairanäytteissä
kohonneina rikkipitoisuuksina.
Svavelnedfall
Sulphur fallout
Release of volcanic sulfur into the atmosphere generates tiny
droplets of sulfuric acid that effectively blocks solar radiation.
Large volcanic eruptions can be traced as anomalous high
sulfuric acid contents in the ice core samples.
Vulkaaninen talvi
Toba-tulivuori Indonesiassa purkautui valtavalla voimalla noin
74 000 vuotta sitten. Superpurkauksen aiheuttama rikkilaskeuma
on havaittu sekä Grönlannin että Etelämantereen jääkerroksissa.
Jättipurkaus sai aikaan jopa 10–15 °C ilmaston viilenemisen lähes
kymmeneksi vuodeksi.
Volcanic winter
The Toba supereruption in Indonesia ca. 74 000 years ago caused up
to 10–15 °C global cooling that lasted almost a decade. The abrupt and
severe climate change may have brought mankind close to extinction.
Vulkanisk vinter

Ruohoarojen laiduntaja
Tuuheakarvainen villasarvikuono eli jääkauden aikana laajalla mammuttiarolla,
Grazing on the grassy steppe
The thick-haired woolly rhinoceros lived during
the Ice Age on the extensive mammoth steppe that covered
almost the whole of Eurasia. The rhinoceros’s thick coat protected
it from the cold. Its large head and sturdy neck were bent downwards,
making it a typical grazer of the grassy steppe. The extinction of this
species coincided with the disappearance of the woolly mammoth
from the Eurasian continent about 14,000 years ago.
Coelodonta antiquitatis
Saiga selvisi jääkaudesta – selviääkö se nykyajasta?
Jääkaudella saigan levinneisyys kattoi lähes koko jäätikön ulkopuolisen Euraasian
aivan eteläisimpiä ja pohjoisimpia alueita lukuun ottamatta. Tämä arojen ääreviin olo-
suhteisiin sopeutunut pieni antilooppi selvisi voittajana jääkaudesta, mutta nykyisin sala-
metsästys ja taudit muodostavat uhan kannan säilymiselle. Saigoja ja mongoliansaigoja
elää erillisillä alueilla Venäjän, Kazakstanin ja Mongolian aroilla.
The saiga survived the Ice Age, but will it
survive the modern age?
During the Ice Age, the saiga antelope ranged all across the ice-free
areas of the Eurasian continent with the exception of the southern-
and northernmost regions. This small antelope survived the Ice Age,
but today it is threatened by poaching and disease. Populations of the
saiga and the Mongolian saiga can be found in separate locations in
the Russian, Kazakhstan and Mongolian steppes.

kuivuudesta
Pohjoisen soilla ilmastonmuutos näkyy
palsasoiden ikiroudan sulamisena.
Etelämpänä yhä lämpimämpi ilmasto voi
kuivattaa soita ojitusten tavoin.

tjälen i palsmyrarna smälter.

Mire birds are inflicted by draught
In the northern mires, climate change can be witnessed in
the melting of the permafrost. Further south, the increasingly
warm climate can dry peatlands in the same way as draining.
Mires are important nesting areas, especially for waders,
and the larger and wetter the bog, the more waders can be
found there. Drained mires used for peat production attract
waders the least. Of all the European countries, Finland has
the greatest responsibility for conserving the flora and fauna
of mires.
