Recycling saves significant resources. For every ton of paper recycled, 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, and enough electricity to power a house for six months are conserved. Household electronics and batteries contain chemicals that can pollute groundwater if disposed of in landfills. Recycling an aluminum can saves enough electricity to run a TV for six hours, and recycling a glass bottle saves enough energy for a 100-watt bulb to run for four hours. When landfills reach capacity, taxpayers must fund new ones, so reducing waste extends landfill lifespan and saves money.
