Newton built upon the ideas of Aristotle and Galileo to develop his three laws of motion, establishing classical mechanics. Aristotle proposed that there are two types of motion - natural motion where falling objects exhibit constant speed, and violent motion for objects thrown upward. Galileo reasoned that without an external force, an object will continue to move at a constant velocity. Newton then stated his three laws of motion - the law of inertia, the law of acceleration, and the law of interaction.
