Editor's Notes

  1. For my presentation, I will be focusing on LAW AS CULTURE. My research focuses on Law and how it can be viewed as Culture or as a product of culture. This presentation is being presented for English 250 Section 8 for Briana McCoy at The University of Mississippi.
  2. The Criminal Justice Profession focuses on laws, whether it is the obedience, compliance or the respect for the laws, IT IS THE FOCUS. Those required to follow these laws are the people those in criminal justice must deal with. Laws affect the lives of the people they are working with on the daily basis and even themselves. Should the people who are the supposed clients be thought of—how are these laws contributing to their lives. Laws are their base, the people are or should be the focus.
  3. While researching laws and its effects on it’s citizens, Laws are viewed as culture. How do laws affect the lives of those people who are required to follow them? The laws are viewed as a way of life. Do these laws affect us positively or negatively? How are laws influencing the socialization of individuals in every aspect of life? Laws are a big part of the lives of individuals, especially the citizens of the United States. If you were to evaluate yourself, you would come to find that laws have influenced the way you do things or even think about things. Laws are important in the lives of people whether they realize it or not. My research question is very broad and consists of a lot of underlying questions to ask myself while completing my research. For Example, How do people view laws, Do laws pose a greater threat to socialization than religion or any other aspect of life, how are laws controlling in the lives of individuals and do laws change for the good or the bad? There are other questions within the research question that I considered throughout my research.
  4. Laws are products of culture, individuals created laws as a system to regulate. The system was created for a goal. The reasons for laws are much deeper, laws control people beyond just normal laws. Laws—defined are systems of regulating control to ensure peace and order within the given society. People know laws are a great contributing factor in their lives and that laws have control over their lives, but do individuals realize the change within themselves in accordance to laws. Laws play a crucial role in the lives of individuals. People follow laws in order to keep peace and avoid punishment. The fact that people do this is because punishment is a positive reinforcer. It teaches individuals to follow rules, not only laws, but the rules that lie within families, religion and etc. Individuals have religions, family values and personal values, how do they make decisions when the one of the following does not agree with the laws. Individuals will more than likely follow the laws than those personal choices. The importance of the law in the lives helps to ensure more healthy citizens than none.
  5. My research was not collected from one source of data. Instead I used scholarly journal articles prepared by professionals within the field, web databases and reviews. The research from those sources were my primary source of gaining research. This is information gave me a base to look at when developing a clear answer to my research question whenever I get it completed. Other sources of information obtained for research purposes were my secondary research, which came from questionnaires of normal citizens and an interview with a Criminal Justice Professional. The names of these individuals are not to be disclosed.
  6. The participants in my study all agreed that laws affected their lives. Besides personal experiences, the participants responses to the questions were similar. The interview with the CJ professional was not fully completed as of yet, but I had the chance to begin the process. From the information obtained, laws help the populations socialize. They were created to provide peace and order. The person’s thought agrees with the research I had conducted. Those people who had broke the law did not all get punished for the crime, but they did break the law. A large percentage of participants stated that laws help do help society, yet 50 percent of the participants broke the laws that help society. Even though these individuals broke the law, they were not all punished.
  7. So far, the research gathered provides me with a lot of information to analyze. So my stand as of right now is that laws affect culture and is integrated in producing culture. Laws affect socialization and is positive to the individuals that follow them; it provides a basis for following all kinds of rules in every aspect of life. For example, religion and family rules. Myresearch is no where near complete, I have to gather all of my information to getting a clear statement of the conclusion of my research. I have to finish the interview with the individual I am interviewing. I still have more research to obtain. I could use more current and reliable sources to add to my research.
