Laurence Stephen Lowry was a British artist born in 1887 who was inspired by the industrial towns and factories near where he lived in Manchester. He had a day job but painted scenes of ordinary life, including places in his town and football matches, in the evenings. Lowry is known for his simple, natural-colored paintings of "matchstick people" figures in landscapes. He also did portraits and was the official artist of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953.
