About me...
I’m a graphic designer specializing in print design. I
grew up on a farm in Ohio and now live in Delaware.
A graduate of Wittenberg University, I was intrigued
with fonts and design elements and my first crack at
a Macintosh loaded with a layout software program
was one of the most memorable times of my life.
I have been in the graphic design business ever
since, beginning in the non profit sector, a freelance
designer, moving to an accounting firm, and for the
past twelve years, a private school.
I enjoy conceptualizing, preparing, and producing
design and layout for publications and event
promotion. It’s always exciting to brainstorm with
creative thinkers and clients to bring all the elements
together and even better when I get to use my skills
in photography and editing. Last summer I attended
training for WordPress and now have to say that
website upkeep and revamping is one of my favorite
parts of my job.
In my spare time I enjoy upcycling items into
something new and beautiful, collage art, and
watching hummingbirds outside my office window.

Stuffing Sandwiches Down My Shirt...Strategies and Inspiration for Crutch Users
With her upbeat approach to one-footed living, Heather Dugan
delivers practical ideas for maximizing the temporary challenges
associated with a casted leg and crutch use. The author, a single
mom of three, found humor to be critical in making her post-op
recovery time a fulfilling and, surprisingly, fun experience. Gym
workouts, grocery shopping, and even happy hours still happened.
She deemed her cast to be“better than a puppy”in facilitating
human connection.
“’Stuffing Sandwiches Down My Shirt...’is a very practical and inspirational look at
how to survive and excel in recovering from an injury or in this case, surgery. Ms.
Dugan uses her upbeat humor to share her own thoughts and creative solutions
to the very real challenges encountered during recovery from surgery. She also
shows how one can take ownership of their recovery and stay active in a safe
and practical manner. As a surgeon, I will strongly recommend my patients to
read this perspective BEFORE their procedure when possible so they can be as
knowledgeable and proactive as possible. Thanks for sharing this perspective
Heather!”
Dr Christopher Hyer, DPM
Westerville, Ohio
“Heather Dugan’s“Stuffing Sandwiches Down My Shirt...”is totally‘on spot’for
anyone destined for a leg cast. It is also‘required reading’for those who think
recuperating after any surgery is just‘something to get through.’ Why? Because
“Sandwiches”is all about attitude with a capital‘A.’ This is more than a DIY
manual—it’s as if Heather becomes your personal mentor urging you to adopt
your own“yes, I can”attitude. We know‘Attitude’affects the healing process—so
thank you, Heather, for such an enjoyable and health-enhancing read.”
Monda Sue Prior, MSW, LICSW
Brewster, Massachusetts
“Heather Dugan’s“Stuffing Sandwiches Down My Shirt...’”is really a great story
about Heather’s determination to not let a temporary setback like‘walking on
crutches’stop her from being happy, active, and fit—mentally, emotionally, and
physically. This book will take you on Heather’s journey from the hopelessness of
not being able to run again to her spirited triumph over the many obstacles in
her way. You will be inspired to put your own‘best foot forward’enthusiastically
when faced with challenges. Bravo Heather!”Mark Dilworth, BA, PES

Cover design: Laura Stepp
Dear Reader,
Loneliness makes fools of us all. And yes, I’m including myself in there. Looking
for love from a place of isolation is as unwise as grocery shopping on an empty
stomach. And despite more than $2 billion in annual spending on Internet dating
sites, there are now more lonely Americans than ever!
What are we doing wrong?
If you’re single, you may feel alone, but you’re one of over 100 million in the United
States where the phenomenon of mid and late life divorce has resulted in drastic
societal change. Since 1990 the divorce rate for people 50 and over has doubled,
and for the first time ever there are more divorcees than widows in this age
group. If you’re a woman over age 40, you probably spent the first half of your life
with a man you met face-to-face at college, on the job or through mutual friends.
Fast-forward to the 21st century where social media and instant messaging
have transformed daily life and online dating has gone mainstream—where
choices are real, plentiful and often overwhelming—and many of the relationship
skills of your youth and early adulthood are now obsolete! And it’s unlikely that
Prince Charming II will simply stride into your elevator at work when you aren’t
preoccupied with your 9AM meeting or afterschool carpool schedule.
The typical book on dating, with strategies to manipulate or force a relationship to
“win” a guy, only compounds the problem—and is more likely to help you maintain
your spot on the breakup treadmill. This isn’t a game. It’s your life.
Brace yourself for some painful truths, shared by men and women just like you:
smart, attractive and accomplished people who’ve made romantic mistakes based
upon the deep human need for a connected life. Expect straight advice, answers
built around stories from the field and from personal experience—Yep. Been there,
done that. I am confident this book will help you find a high quality significant
relationship. But I am even more confident that you will find these insights, mined
from the highly personal embarrassments and heartaches of so many wise and
witty women, to be valuable in building a fulfilling life. A bigger, better life.
“Desperate” doesn’t look good on any of us. Date like a grownup instead. The
lighting’s better, you’ll get a better grip on the steering wheel and are more likely to
move in a direction that will enhance your life.
Cheers!
Heather
