Why use immersive
resources?
➢ Make previously inaccessible (or rarely
accessible) environments available.
➢ Improve personal reflection and more
nuanced understanding of decision
making and in situ responses
➢ Provide rich personal narratives from a
learner perspective (reduce sense of
isolation in new cohorts).
➢ Reduce anxiety levels in some students
by managing expectations.
What kit do we use?
▪ Go Pro Fusion (waterproof 360°
camera) £500
▪ iPad Pro (for live preview and reviewing
raw footage on location) circa £1350
▪ Tascam mics (improved quality of audio
when recording outdoors) £160
▪ Oculus Go (VR Headset, videos installed
directly onto device) £250
Total cost £2,500 (rounding up to include
sundries – light stand, bag, SD cards etc

Top tips for filming
➢ Use a light stand, not a tripod
➢ Don’t carry the camera around!
➢ Position the camera at eye height
➢ Allow a few extra seconds before
narration/action starts so viewer can ‘settle in’
➢ Be aware of stitch lines
➢ Consider how to interact with the audience

Latitude 360 enhancing fieldwork showcase

  • 3. Project overview ➢ Faculty funded (Environmental and Life Sciences) ➢ Started Spring 2019 ➢ Virtual Reality (VR) media kit and training ➢ Cross-disciplinary ◦ Health Sciences, Geography, Biology, Ocean and Earth Sciences
  • 4. Why use immersive resources? ➢ Make previously inaccessible (or rarely accessible) environments available. ➢ Improve personal reflection and more nuanced understanding of decision making and in situ responses ➢ Provide rich personal narratives from a learner perspective (reduce sense of isolation in new cohorts). ➢ Reduce anxiety levels in some students by managing expectations.

What kit do we use? ▪ Go Pro Fusion (waterproof 360° camera) £500 ▪ iPad Pro (for live preview and reviewing raw footage on location) circa £1350 ▪ Tascam mics (improved quality of audio when recording outdoors) £160 ▪ Oculus Go (VR Headset, videos installed directly onto device) £250 Total cost £2,500 (rounding up to include sundries – light stand, bag, SD cards etc

Workflows and progress ▪ Mixed methods approach to development ▪ Digital Learning team films on location with staff ▪ Staff film unassisted ▪ Digital Learning Team involved in editing, publishing Biology • Spain • New Forest Ocean & Earth Sciences • West Wales Health Sciences • Clinical skills lab • Cath lab Geography • Belize rainforest ▪ Outputs so far... ▪ VR versions shown at 4 University Open Days ▪ 3 completed videos published publically on YouTube/Vimeo 360 ▪ Next phase of project includes student feedback and co-creation

  • 12. Top tips for filming ➢ Use a light stand, not a tripod ➢ Don’t carry the camera around! ➢ Position the camera at eye height ➢ Allow a few extra seconds before narration/action starts so viewer can ‘settle in’ ➢ Be aware of stitch lines ➢ Consider how to interact with the audience
