The latissimus dorsi, or "lats", is the largest back muscle that originates from the hips and fans across the back and under the shoulder blade to attach to the arm bone. Its main function is to bring the arms towards the body and help stabilize movements, so the lats tend to be tight. Exercises like pulling from the elbows instead of arms can target the lats, as well as foam rolling and trigger pointing to stretch them out.
