Larry Kagan was born in a German refugee camp and moved to Israel and then the Bronx as a child. He studied to be an aeronautical engineer but discovered he was more of an individualist. In 1972 he landed a job as a sculpture instructor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he has worked ever since. Kagan's work involves using shadows to encrypt forms and store information in new ways of capturing drawings, though he notes people understand it better if described simply as making interesting drawings using shadows.
