A commercial fishing boat caught the largest colossal squid ever recorded off the coast of New Zealand in February 2007. Weighing nearly 1,000 pounds and measuring 33 feet long, it was the largest invertebrate captured and nearly three times larger than any other giant squid previously caught. Scientists now have proof that squids can grow to enormous sizes, as they believed but lacked evidence, and hope to further understand squids using this rare specimen since little is known about them.

3. A Colossal Squid was caught by a commercial fishing boat last month (February 2007). They caught it off the coast of New Zealand. The enormous creature weighed nearly one thousand pounds (454 Kg) and measured 33 feet long (10m). It is the largest invertebrate (animals without bones) ever captured. This squid was nearly three times larger than any other giant squid ever captured! Scientists believed that squid could grow to this enormous size but have never had the proof to back up that theory, now they do. They hope the creature will help further understanding about squids because there is little known about them.
