Pressing Problems of English
Learners in the Philippines
Literacy Gap
Hindering the overall academic performance of
students in the Philippines is their struggle to read and
write.
Solutions:
3. Reading Resources- ensure schools have well-stocked libraries with
diverse and engaging books.
1. Early Literacy Programs- implement comprehensive literacy programs
from an early age, focusing on phonics and reading comprehension.
2. Teacher Training-provide professional development for teachers in
effective literacy instruction methods.
Motivation to Read Stories and Inability to
Comprehend
Students often lack the motivation to read, and
when they do, they struggle to comprehend what they
read.
Solutions:
1. Literary Engagement- introduce literature that reflects the
culture and interests of students to make reading more engaging.
2. Reading Comprehension Strategies- teach specific reading
comprehension strategies to help students understand and retain
information to text.
3. Book Clubs and Discussions- Encourage book clubs and
discussions to make reading a social and enjoyable activity.
Lack of Confidence Speaking in Front
Many students in the Philippines are hesitant to
speak in front of the class, which can hinder their
communication skills and self confidence.
Solutions:
1. Public Speaking Classes- incorporate public speaking
and communication skills into the curriculum.
2. Peer Support- create an environment where students can practice
speaking in front of their peers in supportive and non-judgmental
way.
3. Encourage Participation- encourage participation in classroom
discussions and presentations to gradually build students
confidence.
