The commons is not a new idea, but rather one that has been assisting in the generation of meaning since human beings developed the ability to recognise and replicate signs. Erin McKean, the best-dressed lexicographer in the business, explodes the myth of the commons as a digital phenomenon.

What do you need to think about to build "Brand You?" It doesn't matter what industry you belong or aspire to, everyone has a brand. Being able to define and convey your unique brand will become necessary skills as the explosive growth of the social web continues. The alternative is to be lost in the digital shuffle. What happens to our digital estate after we die? Who should have control of our email accounts, social media profiles and online identities? Did you know that social networks will release our data more easily to authorities that request it than to our loved ones? Have you created a digital will to determine who should have access to your information? But, more importantly, do you want to continue 'living' after your physical death? It turns out that we don't have much of a choice in the matter and that complete digital death may be more difficult to achieve than we think. This talk is an exploration of the state of death in the digital era and a conversation around the rights that surround and are affected by our participation in social networks, in addition to the more personal challenges we face when we lose someone who continues to live on our digital timelines. Slides to support a conversation with high school teachers about holding up a mirror to our own digital ethics as a precursor to doing the same with students. St. James-Assiniboia School Division. 27 November 2013. We live in an age where everything is recorded digitally – in pictures, video, and text – live as it happens; it's the end of the age of legends. "Selfie", according to the Oxford dictionary, is the word of the year 2013. Often the selfies our students are sharing aren't putting their best digital foot forward. As teachers, how can we help our students leave digital footprints they can be proud of? Is only sharing your "best stuff" such a good idea? How do we address the issue of digital ethics across the curriculum and in our classrooms? In this session we will share some practical suggestions for a digital ethics policy in your classroom, share resources you can use with your students to have meaningful conversations about making ethical and responsible choices online, and share concrete practical suggestions you can use in your class tomorrow to help your students create digital footprints that will pass The Grandparent Test (it's not what you think it is).
