9. Causes of landform development
PLATE TECTONICS
• Plate tectonics result in disturbance in
the sedimentary rock deposit lying in
between two or more plate. The
sedimentary rocks are compressed
which causes folding of the rocks.
Forces responsible for the formation
of fold mountains are called Orogenic
movements which means mountain
building

2) RESIDUAL MOUNTAIN PICTURE
• Residual mountains are
those mountains which have
been eroded by the agents of
degradation such as winds, rain,
frost and running water. The
hard rocks that are left behind
are called residual mountains.
30. TYPES OF PLATEAU
VOLCANIC PLATEAU
• A volcanic plateau is
a plateau produced
by volcanic activity. There are
two main types:
lava plateaus and
pyroclastic plateaus.

33. PLAINS
• In geography, a plain is a flat,
sweeping landmass that
generally does not change much
in elevation. Plains occur
as lowlands along valleys or on
the doorsteps of mountains,
as coastal plains, and
as plateaus or uplands
34. TYPES OF PLAINS
STRUCTURAL PLAIN-these pains are formed due to uplift or
subsidence of land. Diastrophic forces may cause uplift of a
portion of land beneath the ocean water or may cause
submergence of coastal land under ocean water.
Examples- The Great plain of the USA
under water.
39. IMPORTANCE OF LANDFORMS
• 1) Mountains plateaus, plains and valleys are beautiful sculptures of nature on the
surface crust of the earth. They add to the beauty.
• ) landforms represent the relief features of the earth. They have an impact on climate,
direction of winds, precipitation as well as climate, atmospheric processes. Himalayas act
as a climatic divide shaping the distinctive climate of the Indian subcontinent.
• 3) the mountain ranges of the world are the abode of snow and glaciers. They are thus
the source f perennial rivers.
• 4) many kinds of forests are found on the slopes of mountains, hills and plateaus. These
are home to different species of plants and animals.
• 5) since such relief features also exist in oceans, the island group and coastal regions are
ideal fishing sites.
• 6) major landforms are created by disturbances resulting form the forces operating in the
interior of the earth,. Most mineral and fossil fuels come near the surface of the earth
due to these disturbances.
