Azerbaijan has a long history of oil production dating back to the 1860s. During the Soviet Union period, Azerbaijan extracted over 1 billion tons of crude oil and was responsible for over 90% of the Soviet Union's oil industry. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan's oil production declined significantly to between 5-10 million tons annually but has since increased to over 14 million tons with plans to reach 50 million tons. Azerbaijan also has sizable natural gas reserves, including the Shah Deniz field, and produces hydroelectric power. However, Azerbaijan lost much of its oil industry infrastructure and manufacturing capacity after the Soviet Union.
