The Washington State market was the first in Comcast to reach out through social media, years ago, to customers to let them know about severe storms that affect their service. I'm sharing this after action report prepared by a colleague because I'm passionate that social media is the best way to reach out to customers during significant weather incidents such as windstorms. I've been reaching out to customers like this longer than anyone else at Comcast, because it's the right thing to do. Yes, managing social media for a Comcast market involves dealing with a lot of angry people. And it's no wonder: Internet and video are addictive substances, and people take their Internet and video very seriously. Who can blame them? This particular project involved working 32 days straight - because we have one person in Washington who does social, me. But I didn't mind because the windstorms had done horrific damage and created a story that needed telling. This relentless stream of communication was the right thing to do for our customers.

This is part of a presentation I gave to the Comcast employees West Division Social Media Club about an outage we had in the Lake Stevens area in August 2013. The event occurred in a small enough area to show a clear picture of the future of business-to-consumer public relations and social media. The day of the telecom company just Tweeting "Sorry about the service interruption" is past; we need now to engage customers very personally. As the voice of @ComcastWA, I had a variety of personal discussions with people.
How Communications Supported #Xfinity4College in 2013Walter Neary
The Comcast West Division Social Media Club supported a variety of back-to-school campaigns led by our marketing group. We had fun in Washington with events at Western Washington University, Bellingham, and at the University of Washington, Seattle. We took photographs and videos. One event was in a location without a lot of traffic, so to add visual interest, our intern Holly Martinez brought her enormous dog along. The idea here was to create engagement and fun, and people sure enjoyed meeting Ashe!

Government and Social Media: The Legal Issues to ConsiderWalter Neary
This column by attorney Ramsey Ramerman details important concerns for local elected officials and local governments to consider when they use social media like Twitter, Facebook and blogs. The column is particularly useful for Washington State, where Ramerman is an assistant city attorney for the city of Everett. This reprint appears with the kind permission of the Association of Washington Cities. This column first appeared in the September 2009 issue of their magazine, CityWise.
December 2013: This slideshow is something of a historical artifact now. This slideshow came from one of the first talks given to a state association of local elected officials that was encouraging them to use social media. It was quite a show - my talk got 'gatecrashed' by a lawyer, plus some local elected officials with a history of shady dealings, who warned the other electeds that they and their cities could face stiff penalties if they used social media. It's hysterical in 2013, but this was heady stuff in 2009. Here's my original description of the talk, which I'm preserving in compliance with the WA state public records act:
Talk to other locally elected officials in the summer of 2009 about how they can use blogging, Facebook, Twitter and other methods to reach out, and hear from, constituents. Annual conference of the Association of Washington Cities, Spokane.
The Static Age: Challenges to a More Digital DemocracyWalter Neary
My talk to Barcamp Tacoma about the unfilled promise of a more digital government using social media and other new media tools. I should add great thanks to Comcast, where I work, because they allow me to be a locally elected officials and work on presentations and interests like this.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
