Past Prophecies Promise Present-Day Peace
Holy Name’s Lady of Fatima Event Will Fascinate Faithful & Captivate the Curious
CHICAGO—A zigzagging sun careens toward Earth. Children witness hellish visions. An
apparition reveals epic-proportion prophecies.
The latest CGI-intensive, sci-fi blockbuster? No. Just a few elements of the Our Lady of Fatima
phenomenon, which has captivated Catholics for nearly a century.
Interest isn’t confined to Vatican devotees, either. The 1917 events inspired an Oscar-nominated
Hollywood film and, to this day, intrigue UFO researchers, scientists and skeptics alike. The
fantastic Fatima saga even supplies the story line of the first-ever X-Files comic book.
Right now, Chicago filmmakers are shooting scenes for a one-hour 2017 broadcast to celebrate
Fatima’s centennial: “Fatima 100: A Countdown to Our Lady of Fatima’s 100th
Anniversary.”
Why such widespread current-day curiosity about a 100-year-old event and its triple predictions?
Find out by attending “What Every Catholic Should Know About Fatima,” a celebration and
investigation into the Our Lady of Fatima incident and its present relevance.
What Every Catholic Should Know About Fatima
2:15 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 11
Holy Name Cathedral
800 N. State St., Chicago
The event offers a spectacular color photo-op: Three children re-enacting a segment of the
story in front of an LED-illuminated Lady of Fatima shrine boasting a floating-cloud illusion—
all within the architecturally magnificent cathedral.
2. Mass (with Benediction and Rosary) will be conducted by Bishop Joseph Nathaniel Perry.
Thomas J. Dunn, President, Our Lady of Fatima – Chicago Blue Army, Division of the World
Apostolate of Fatima, will speak on Fatima’s importance. Providing music are St. John the
Evangelist Philippine Choir and Sam Parker (Chicago recording artist and gospel singer).
Plus, the first 1,000 attendees receive a free Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Scapular and “What Every
Catholic Should Know About Fatima” booklet.
Vivid Visions
During World War I’s waning days and coinciding with much of the Russian Revolution’s
chronology, three Portuguese peasant children said they were visited by Our Lady of Fatima five
times from May to September 1917, culminating with the Miracle of the Sun in October
reportedly witnessed by 70,000. The Roman Catholic Church officially deemed the astronomical
oddity a miracle on the event’s 13th anniversary, Oct. 13, 1930.
Three secrets ultimately were revealed, with controversy surrounding the third prediction’s
details, authenticity and meaning. The first secret is a vision of hell. The second is a revelation
World War I would end, but that another conflict would erupt if humankind continued offending
God and Russia didn’t abandon communism and convert to Catholicism. The Vatican revealed
secret No. 3 in 2000, saying it foretold John Paul II’s attempted assassination.
“The purpose of the vision is not to show a film of an irrevocably fixed future,” Cardinal Joseph
Ratzinger (future Pope Benedict XVI) said in a theological commentary released simultaneous
with the third secret. “Its meaning is exactly the opposite: it is meant to mobilize the forces of
change in the right direction.”
Some say the third secret hasn’t been unveiled and the Vatican is concealing an apocalyptic
vision, which Ratzinger denied: “No great mystery is revealed; nor is the future unveiled.”
Not-So-Fast Forward
“Wars, famines and persecutions of the Church could be avoided by following what Our Lady of
Fatima revealed,” Fatima 100 Event Director Jack Mulqueen said. “Her message is very relevant
for today.
“We’re excited to be working on a film dramatizing Our Lady of Fatima’s visitation,” said
Mulqueen, associate director of the upcoming film. Mulqueen’s name might be familiar to
Chicago children’s TV fans. He and his wife created “Kiddie A-Go-Go,” enjoying a successful
1965-1970 run on WLS-TV and WCIU. Mulqueen also co-authored “The Golden Age of
Chicago Children’s Television.”
“This movie will show people the good news Our Lady of Fatima’s message provides,” Bartlett
resident Mulqueen said. “In the 100 years since she first appeared, the world has changed in so
many ways, yet one might argue it hasn’t moved forward much. Our Lady’s words contain the
key to making substantial leaps and realizing everlasting joy.”
