This document summarizes a mentorship program undertaken by three students - Rahul Raveendranath, Venkiteswaran R, and Anoop Joseph Babu. The program involved researching Android malware and anti-malware techniques under the guidance of Soumya Kanti Datta, a research engineer. The students conducted literature reviews, developed a novel Android malware, and created anti-malware software. They presented their work at a conference and are exploring starting an anti-malware startup. The experience gave them hands-on training in advanced Android development and sparked an interest in research and development.

3. Why we chose mentorship program?
● Industry level work experience
● Exposure to cutting-edge technology
● Interest in mobile technologies
● Curious to know more about malwares
Not as a final year project!
4. Android Malware Research
● Research project on android malware and
anti malware techniques
● Mentored by Soumya Kanti Datta, Research
Engineer at EURECOM, France
5. ● Three parts:
○ Literature survey
○ Development of a novel android malware
○ Development of anti malware software
● Researched and worked on development of
mobile botnets
● Presently on third phase
6. Our experience
● Great experience working with Soumya
● Weekly meetings to give updates and get
advice from mentor
● Got access to latest research papers and
developments
7. ● Obtained hands-on experience in doing advanced android application development
● Developed interest in doing R&D
● Hope to continue this going forward
8. Our takeaways
● Co-authored a research paper which got accepted at
International Conference on Control, Instrumentation,
Communication and Computational Technologies
(ICCICCT 2014)
● Two more papers underway
● Learnt a lot about security in modern platforms
● Exploring possibility of founding an anti-malware startup
We are three CS undergrads who got this fabulous opportunity to be part of LABX mentorship program. We started our journey with none or little knowledge in android ( ithu veno? only true for me :-| ) and now we feel like pro. Seriously we learnt a lot.!! Thanks to our mentor and his endless patience .
note that this was not our final year project even though it’s totally fine to do it that way
The project our team is working on as part of the mentorship program is on Android Security. It is a research project on android malware and anti-malware software.
This project is mentored by Mr. Soumya Kanti Datta, As in slide. His prior experience and knowledge on android security, his advice on various advanced topics and his excellent mentoring have helped us to reach this far as part of the project.
Elaborate on the three parts
Since our project is to develop a novel android malware, it involved a lot of literature survey to get in sync with the existing state of the art facilities in these areas.
We then started our work on developing a novel android malware. We did a lot of research on mobile botnets, weakness and security issues related with the android platform, and developed our own android malware ( which may be running in your mobile phone at this point of time :P chali erakano? ).
We are on working on the third phase now, which is development of anti-malware solutions.
elaborate on each point. soumya really knowledgable. he was really flexible and understanding esp during our exam time etc. we got guidance on a weekly basis
he also shared lots of latest resources which we could have never found/bought ourselves
we obtained knowledge in advanced android app dev as well as in concepts like rooting, hacking etc.
we realized that research can be so much fun
we got to co-author a technical paper for an international conference. we are also working more two more papers.
we learned a lot abt security in modern mobile platforms. we are presently exploring the possiblity of taking our learnings to real life as a product.
