Spanish conquerors first arrived in the
region now known as Texas in 1519,
finding the region populated by various
Native American tribes. During the
period from 1519 to 1848, most parts of
Texas were claimed by six countries:
France, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of
Texas, the U.S.A. as well as the
Confederate States of America in 1861–65
