2logical - 20 Life Lessons I Wish Someone Would Have Taught Me in My 20s
Know Yourself
1. Know Yourself
Today I read a review of the book the Unwritten Rules by John Beeson (6 skills you need to get
promoted to the executive level). Very interesting to read the theory behind these practices.
What the book really gives value are the examples of people who didn’t get a promotion. The
biggest problem was that they were clueless why they weren’t being promoted and nobody told
them exactly.
The quality of the work is not the only aspect of what influences the outcome. It’s also how it is
perceived by others. And how do you know how it is perceived..? Honest feedback is scarce. If
you have a good developed antenna for other peoples emotions you might be able to some
degree to look behind the first facade. But even than, you might miss things. The only thing that
is really valuable is honest feedback. It needs both courage and sensitivity to know when and
who to ask. You have to step out of your comfort zone. Coaching and courses provided on this
site can help you with it.
Maybe you dont have the ambition for a corporate career, but there is a lesson in this story for
everyone. Any goal we want in live gives better results if we know ourselves. Being aware of
who we are and how we are perceived by others is the key that will open a lot of doors and
gives you the opportunity to focus on the fun part. In other words; find your mojo to get in flow.
