Experimental Animation
1/25/2016
My interest in animation began at a young age, and grew while in college. It has always been my
belief that the art of animation should not be limited to the traditional techniques of 2D hand
drawn or the popular 3D.
Everything available should be a canvas to the process of animation, either technically, from
found objects and materials, to any other techniques imagined from the mind of the artist.
This should not be limited to one form of art but can include or merge many forms, including
dance, and music. I have always been intrigued by this notion of collaborations.
My first experiment into the experimental side of animation was animation the color prints from
the exposed ends of color film and combined them with images of moving lights such as carnival
rides. Another venture was with scratching onto the 16mm developed film stock and hand
coloring it frame by frame.
Currently I would like to create projected 3D animation installations displayed on but not limited
to buildings or other structures. These could be audience interactive exhibits as well.
Another project of many ideas is to work animation into story telling along with bigger than life
puppetry. Additionally I have been fascinated with doing the technique of morphing onto the
walls of buildings, fences, or washways.
I have also been fascinated with expanding the art of shadow puppets, including combining them
with the silhouettes of human dancers.
What is the most fascinating aspect about the art of experimental animation is how it allows the
immense freedom of imagination and how it can be created anywhere possible. Now with all of
the continuing advancements in technology, other avenues open up everyday as to expanding
this form of art.
It would be an inspiration to see what new students of animation dream up and see them push
their ideas to the forefront of their experience.
