KINSHIP
- The bond or marriage which binds people
together in group.
- A social institution that refers to relations
formed between members of society.
DESCENT
- Refers to the origin or background of a
person in terms of family or nationality. It is
biological relationship.
PRINCIPLES OF DESCENT
• Unilineal Descent - Traced through single line
of ancestors, either from father or mother
descent but not both
> Patrilineal Descent- affiliates a person with a group of
relatives through his or her father.
> Matrilineal Descent- affiliates a person with a group of
relatives through his or her mother
• Bilateral Descent - trace through both
ancestral lines of mother and father
TYPES OF KINSHIP
Consanguineal Kinship - relatives "related by
blood" meaning those people with whom you
share known common ancestors, however
distant.
Affinal Kinship - realtives by marriage or
your in-laws: if they marriage ends, they
are no longer affines.
OTHER TYPE OF KINSHIP
KINSHIP BY RITUAL
• compadrazo - a widespread and elaborate form of
“godparenting,” or ritual kinship, organized around
Roman Catholic ceremonies of baptism, confirmation,
and marriage.

• politicsl dynasties- family members involved in
politics for several generations.
• political alliance - parties who agree to
cooperate for common goal
What is MARRIAGE?
A socially or ritually recognized union, or a legal
contract, that establishes rights and obligations
between spouses, forming the basis of a family and
creating affinal kinship ties.
MARRIAGE ACROSS CULTURES
Monogamy- marriage where on
individual has only one spouse at a
time.
polygamy- marriage having more than
one spouse.
(1) polygyny - marriage of one man
having multiple female partner.
(2) polyandry - marriage of one
woman having multiple make partners.
TYPES OF MARRIAGE
Referred Marriage - Happens when someone
finds his/her partners through friends or
relatives who act as matchmakers.
Arranged Marriage - Marriage is arranged
by parents of the groom and bride.
1. Polygamous or Polygynous Family
It is a family with plural spouse marriage.
2. Polyandrous Family
It is a family where one woman has number of
husbands.
3 . Monogamous Family
It is a family with one husband and one wife.

2. Matrifocal Family the parent in such
families is usually the mother.
3. Extended Family - it may consist of two or
more single parent, monogamous,
polygynous families linked with ties.
