Distance and Displacement
Grade 7
What is meant by distance?
Distance is the total movement of an object without
any regard to direction.
Distance has the unit of length
While what is the meaning of displacement?
displacement is a vector whose length is the shortest
distance from the initial to the final position of a point P
undergoing motion.
Determine the total distance from point A
to point C if AB = 30 m and BC = 40 m
Find the displacement of the object
Speed
Speed is the time rate at which an object is moving along a path.
Speed has SI unit of m/s
Example:
A car moves 200 m in 10 s. Find the speed of the car
Known information:
Distance 200 m
Time = 10 s
Speed = 200 m / 10 s = 20 m/s
Distance - Time graph
In physics, distance-time graph
represents the motion of an object
at any interval of time.
Note that uniform speed means the
object moves with constant speed
While stationary means the object is
at rest or speed equals to 0 m/s
a. How many minutes the object stays
stationary?
b. Find the speed of the object for during
a
c. Find the speed of the object during c
Acceleration
The speed of the object might increase and this is called acceleration
The car initially has speed 2 m/s and increased to 10 m/s in 5 s. Find its
acceleration.
