Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Op een dag zat Kikker aan de ontbijttafel na te denken over wat hij zou gaan doen vandaag. Naar het strand? Het is tenslotte mooi weer. Nee, toch maar niet, dacht Kikker. Naar het bos? Ja, dat lijkt mij erg leuk. Kikker ging meteen naar Varkentje.
Varkentje was niet thuis. Gauw naar Eend, dacht Kikker. Bij het huisje van Eend aangekomen, zag Kikker dat Eend net weg wilde gaan. Ik moet boodschappen doen, zei Eend. Dat is jammer, dacht Kikker. Kikker rende naar het huisje van Haas.
Haas stond al in de deuropening. Haas? zei Kikker hijgend. Wil jij met mij mee naar het bos? Leuk idee Kikker, maar ik heb Rat belooft hem vandaag te helpen. Niemand wil met mij mee, zegt Kikker een beetje verdrietig. Eend had geen tijd, Varkentje was niet thuis en jij gaat Rat helpen. Zullen we morgen naar het bos gaan? vroeg Haas. Oké, zei Kikker zacht. Tot morgen, zei Haas.
Kikker ging op een steen zitten. Ik wil liever vandaag naar het bos, dacht Kikker. Zal ik alleen gaan? Het zou leuker zijn geweest om met z`n allen te gaan, maar iedereen heeft al wat te doen, zei Kikker tegen zichzelf. Ja, ik ga alleen naar het bos.
Bij het bos aangekomen begint Kikker aan zijn wandeling. Wat is het toch mooi hier, dacht Kikker. Kikker besluit om naar de open plek midden in het bos te gaan. Het is daar altijd rustig en stil. Niemand die je daar stoort. Kikker was al bijna bij de open plek.
Bij de open plek aangekomen zoekt Kikker een plekje om eens lekker te gaan zitten. Hij hoort de vogels fluiten. Wat is het hier toch heerlijk st………IL. Oei, oei, oei, joei galmt het door het bos. Wat was dat? dacht Kikker. Dat heb ik nooit eerder gehoord. Er komt hier bijna nooit iemand en zeker niet met zoveel lawaai.
Oei, oei, oei, joei, klinkt het weer. Kikker staat op. Er vliegt wat door de lucht. Het komt op Kikker af. Kikker is een beetje bang geworden en verstopt zich gauw achter een boom. Voor wie verstop jij je? vroeg een stem. Kikker draait zich van schrik om. Voooorrrrr u, zegt Kikker bang.
Voor mij hoef je niet bang te zijn, zolang je mij maar niet lastig valt. Ik ben de boze heks. Ik ben Kikker. Waarom heet u de boze heks? vroeg Kikker. Als ik wat kwijt ben of iets niet lukt, wordt ik altijd een beetje boos. Vandaar dat de dieren uit het bos mij zo genoemd hebben, zei de boze heks.
Ik ben opzoek naar zwammen voor in mijn toverdrank, zei de boze heks. Weet jij misschien waar ik die kan vinden? Volgens mij aan de rand van het bos, zei Kikker. Bedankt, ik ga daar wel even kijken, zei de boze heks. Zou jij zolang even op dit kistje willen passen, want het is een beetje zwaar op mijn bezem. Ik kan dan niet zo hoog vliegen. Dat wilde Kikker wel.
Wat zou daar in zitten, dacht Kikker. Ik kom het kistje over een uur weer hier ophalen, zei de boze heks. Dat hoorde Kikker niet meer. Hij was veel te druk met het bedenken wat er in het kistje zou kunnen zitten. Op het kistje stond : " MAGISCHE CIJFERS ".
Het woord cijfers kende Kikker wel. Dat is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Kikker maakt het kistje open. Oh, wat mooi! Het lijkt wel een schatkist. Er zaten inderdaad cijfers in het kistje, maar niet zomaar cijfers. Hele mooie cijfers. Alle cijfers hadden een andere kleur.
Het cijfer 1 was blauw, de 2 zilver, de 3 geel, de 4 was groen, de 5 goud, de 6 geel, roze, groen en wit, de 7 roze, de 8 was paars, de 9 oranje en de 10 was wit. Ik heb echt nog nooit zulke mooie cijfers gezien, zei Kikker. Kikker zette het kistje op de grond naast zich neer.
Hij pakte een takje van de grond. Het cijfer 1 vloog uit het kistje en hing boven Kikker. Wat gebeurde er nu? Van schrik gooide Kikker het takje weg. De 1 verdween weer in het kistje. Even bleef Kikker staan. Ik pakte 1 takje en het cijfer 1 kwam uit het kistje…………………
Als ik nu 5 takjes pak? Kikker gaat opzoek naar 5 takjes. Hij legt de takjes bij het kistje. Kikker hoeft niet lang te wachten of het cijfer 5 vliegt uit het kistje. Hij gooit de stokjes weg en wacht tot de 5 weer terug in het kistje zit. Dat is leuk, dacht Kikker. Dat ga ik aan Eend, Rat, Haas en Varkentje vertellen.
Kikker rende zo hard hij kon terug naar huis, maar vergat te kijken waar hij liep. KLETS………BOEM………Daar lag Kikker lang uit. Hij was gestruikeld over een steen. Domme Kikker, hij had beter moeten uitkijken.
Maar, maar…..waar is het kistje gebleven? O, nee, dacht Kikker. Ik ben het kistje van de boze heks kwijt. Wat moet ik nu doen? Kikker begon met zoeken. Na een tijdje had hij het kistje weer gevonden. Het kistje lag omgekeerd in een struik. Kikker pakte het kistje op en draaide het om. Maar….het kistje was leeg! Nu had hij het kistje, maar geen cijfers. Die zijn er natuurlijk uitgevallen toen ik viel.
Waar Kikker ook zocht, nergens kon hij een cijfer vinden. Misschien kunnen Rat, Haas, Varkentje en Eend mij wel helpen. Hij liep met het kistje naar zijn vrienden. Hij vertelde hen wat er in het bos gebeurd was. Haas, Rat, Varkentje en Eend besloten Kikker te gaan helpen zoeken in het bos.
Waar iedereen ook keek of zocht, geen cijfers. Opeens bedacht Kikker zich wat er in het bos gebeurde toen hij een takje pakte. Het cijfer 1 kwam uit het kistje. Kikker vertelde het hele verhaal aan zijn vrienden. We kunnen het in ieder geval proberen, zei Haas. Dat deden ze.
Kikker pakte 1 takje en hield dat omhoog. Eerst gebeurde er niets. Toen Kikker het bijna wilde opgeven hoorde hij geritsel in een struik. Daar vloog het blauwe cijfer 1 terug het kistje in. Haas stak 2 vingers op, Varkentje haalde 3 koekjes uit zijn tas. Ik heb 4 stenen in mijn rugzak, zei Rat. Kikker, Rat, Haas, Eend en Varkentje zijn met z`n vijven. Kikker zocht naar 6 paddestoelen en Haas hield weer zijn vingers omhoog, maar nu waren het er 7. Rat kwam met 8 besjes aan. Varkentje had nog 9 knikkers in zijn zak. Nu alleen nog het witte cijfer 10. Daar kwam Eend aangerend met 10 bloemen.
Kikker deed gauw het kistje dicht. Alle mooie gekleurde cijfers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 en 10 zaten gelukkig weer veilig in het kistje. Kikker, Haas, Varkentje, Eend en Rat vielen met een plof op de grond. Zo dat is voorbij, zei Rat. Op dat moment klonk oei, oei, oei, joei door het bos. Wat is dat? riepen Eend, Rat, Varkentje en Haas tegelijk.
Dat is nou de boze heks, zei Kikker. Gelukkig net op tijd. De boze heks kwam tussen de vrienden in staan. Wat een drukke boel hier zeg, zei de boze heks. Dit zijn mijn vrienden, zegt Kikker tegen de boze heks. Heeft u de zwammen kunnen vinden? vroeg Kikker. De heks knikte. Heb jij goed op mijn kistje gepast? vroeg de boze heks aan Kikker. Kikker knikte en gaf de boze heks haar kistje terug. De boze heks moest eens weten!
Ik ga er weer vandoor, zei de boze heks. Ik ga mijn toverdrank afmaken. Voordat Kikker het in de gaten had, was de boze heks al verdwenen. Haas, Eend, Kikker, Rat en Varkentje kwamen niet mee bij van het lachen. Bedankt vrienden, zei Kikker. Graag gedaan zeiden Haas, Rat, Eend en Varkentje.
Kom, we gaan bij mij thuis taart eten, zei Varkentje. Bij Varkentje thuis aangekomen telt Eend de stukjes taart. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Vijf stukjes taart roept Eend. Precies genoeg. Kan jij tellen? vraagt Kikker verbaasd aan Eend. Tja, Kikker, dankzij de magische cijfers van de boze heks.
