An introduction to Kickback (https://kickback.events), an Ethereum blockchain application which uses crypto economics to attempt to solve the problem of no-shows at free events.
What is a Blockchain?
What is a Bitcoin?
What is a Crypto Currency?
What is an ICO (Initial Coin Offer)
Attend this workshop to Demystify you assumptions and gain grater knowledge about this latest technologies
Blockchain. What is it & why is it importantGerrie Smits
Why non-techies need to get up to speed with Blockchain. Because Blockchain is more than Bitcoin. It can have an impact on transactions, value systems and organisational structures.
This talk was given at Zeronaut meet-up.
Most people want to jump into & know how to do ICO or participate in it. They trade buzzwords, follow the herd on blockchain & crypto token without knowing where do they really apply. The objective of this is to introduce important concepts that need to be understood before getting into ICO and crypto valuation. All these concepts are introduced gradually through a metaphor then simple mental models followed by a first principle thinking level. This is most useful for entrepreneurs and investors that ought to be thinking about blockchain, ICO & crypto tokens through first principles
Presentation to a local meetup group interested in blockchain in Guangzhou, China on latest trends happening with DeFi, NFT, and other cryptocurrency projects in China

An Investigator’s Guide to Blockchain, Bitcoin and Wallet TransactionsCase IQ
As Bitcoin and blockchains are coming into the mainstream, investigators, auditors and forensics and security professionals need to become familiar with how blockchain works and why it is so important to tomorrow’s digital security. It is important for anyone involved in forensics to understand the risk associated with Bitcoin, the most notable usage of blockchain and how applying forensics to those risks can have an impact.
Bitcoin has huge potential to revolutionize financial services, but with risk, as is implicit with any currency. We need to understand how forensic technology can reduce these risks or solve problems of financial loss should these risks materialize. Technology helps us follow flows of cryptocurrencies through wallets and the blockchain. This can be of particular use to regulators and police forces as well as investigators and auditors.

Gerrie Smits (https://gerriesmits.com) kicked off the event explaining
(a) the basics of blockchain (a.o. immutability, "if... then...", value transfer, tokenisation and token transfer, decentralisation, game theory and aligned incentives) and
(b) looking at it from a business perspective ("Is This Something For Us?")
>> with practical examples of (actual) use cases like a local blockchain to follow the support money granted to refugees, fractional ownership of real estate, incentives to cycle to school, "selling your eyeballs" (advertising),...
>> through the value mapping framework, which brings innovation (value) theory and design thinking in the picture
To conclude he launched a specific point of interest, namely ORGANISATIONAL DESIGN. Starting from the question whether the "tragedy of the commons" can be overcome (looking at theories of a.o. Elinor Ostrom - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elinor_Ostrom), he looks at initiatives that may address this by using blockchain technology: Colony (https://colony.io/index.html), Aragon https://aragon.org/), OrgTech (https://orgtech.substack.com/),...
This is material for a hack(athlon).
The title of his keynote refers to the title of the book he wrote (in Dutch) which is packed with use cases: https://gerriesmits.com/blockchain-is-wtf-boek/
The context was the second (2019) edition of the Computational Law and Blockchain Festival (#CLBFest), Brussels' node.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Accelerate your Kubernetes clusters with Varnish CachingThijs Feryn

2. “Crypto-economic incentives”
Actors are driven by economic incentives,
standard game theory applies.
The rules and logic are underpinned and
enforced through cryptography, i.e. the
blockchain.
Frees us to just focus on ensuring the
incentives are correct.
4. A common problem: No-shows
• Hard to plan and
budget for
• Low turnout can
“break” an event
• Discourages future
participation
5. With common solutions…
Introduce scarcity
Do fewer events
Limit to fewer max. people
Early RSVP deadline
Spend more $$
Marketing and promotion
Pizza, beer, gifts
VIPs
Ask for more commitment
Jump through hoops to sign-up
Chase up no-shows and query them
Monetary solutions…
6. Monetary solutions
*https://www.eventbrite.com/blog/asset/ultimate-way-reduce-no-shows-free-events/
Charge if no-show
Pros: Participant only charged if
they don’t show up
Cons: Requiring card details will
deter some people.
Paid tickets
Pros: Will increase turnout due to
higher perceived value of ticket*
Cons: No longer free, and upfront
payment will deter many people
Deposit they get back
Pros: Will increase turnout*. Still
effectively free for participant if
they show up to the event.
Cons: Need to collect money and
then give it back. Could still deter
people due to upfront payment.
Cumbersome
payment
logistics!
7. Remember the fundamentals…
“If I don’t need to pay I’ll
happily sign up, because
it isn’t costing me
anything”
“If I have to pay then I
need to think carefully
about it. I wish it was
just free”
“I signed up, but it was
free, so it’s ok if I
change my mind now
and give it a miss”
“I signed up, and it cost
me, so if I change my
mind now I’ll have
wasted my money”
8. Deposit they get back
“If I don’t need to pay I’ll
happily sign up, because
it isn’t costing me
anything”
“I signed up, and it cost
me, so if I change my
mind now I’ll have
wasted my money”
9. Deposit they get back
How can we make the logistics of this easier?

This is how Kickback currently works!
11. Does it work?
• 7 events at #DevconFour 2
• 500 people RSVP’d
(>$2k in contract)
• Avge. 60% turn up rate
(low due to the type of events)
• Avge. 50% payout profit
• 10+ London Ethereum

• 112 people RSVP’d
• Avge. 90% turn up rate

12. Inconsistent turn-up rate
Not suitable for certain
event types
