We are all faced with juggling multiple
roles and functions in our lives. The
drive to “do it all” can leave us feeling
frustrated, stressed and unfulfilled.
The one sure way to ensure that you
gain back time in your day is to
Delegate!!
Have you ever had someone say to you
“What can I do to help?” and looked
back at them with a blank stare?
For most of us, the issue is not wanting
to let go, rather is understanding what
we can let go of! We are so
overwhelmed that we don’t know what
we can delegate away!

What is on Your plate?
Have you ever sat at Thanksgiving dinner, passing all the yummy
dishes around and thought to yourself “I am going to save room for
Grandma’s Sweet Potatoes” or some other family favorite? You have
the ability to control your plate at Thanksgiving, as you can easily
survey what is available, and what is coming and what is already on
our plate
Conversely, many of us don’t necessarily know what is coming or don’t
fully comprehend what is on our daily plates. What responsibilities do
we have? What daily tasks take up our time? We know the big picture;
and we go through the motions of completing tasks on a daily basis,
but we are doing it on auto pilot. We don’t consciously think of all the
little tasks that we have to complete! If we are not fully aware of what
we do, we can not fully engage in an effective delegation plan! And we
can not save space for “Grandma’s Sweet Potatoes”

Start Filling Your Plate
Let’s create a visual representation of your “Daily Plate”
Grab paper plate and start writing. Write everything you do
every day – from taking care of the kids, grocery shopping,
going to work, the task you do at work. Just start writing.
If you don’t have a Paper Plate, simply use a piece of paper
– but challenge yourself to only use one side of one piece.
You want to see all your tasks in front of you!

plate. Due to space, I
have made some “wide
sweeping” statements.
Provide more details than
this!! Don’t leave
anything off! Keep
adding, filling up every
inch of your plate, with
every little detail. Instead
of “do laundry” consider
writing “do average of 3
loads of laundry every 3
days!”

When we quantify how
much we do, it can
overwhelming!
It aptly shows us that we
don't have the time we
need to have to get
things done.
The good news is that it
gives a good starting
point for moving
forward!

8. Set Priorities
A priority is different than a task.
Think of Grandma’s Sweet Potatoes. All the food on
Thanksgiving Day is food…but Grandma’s Sweet Potatoes, are
special. They are a priority. In business, a priority will
frequently lend itself to being more about our mission, larger
goals and aspirations
For example, you may have “answer phone” on your plate.
This is important; key to running your business. But, what if
you had to choose between that and signing a new client? The
new client probably would trump the phone – making it a
priority. It lends itself to your goals and aspirations: growing
your business and being profitable.

What are your priorities?
Look at your plate?
Of those tasks, what are your priorities? What
are you do or die tasks?
Circle them!
I recommend writing them on a piece of
paper and posting them in your office. As
you go about your day, think, am I working
in service to my priorities, or am I working
on things that can be delegated?
These are the tasks your will keep!

10. Break Remaining Tasks into 3 Groups

Now
•These tasks can be delegated immediately
•The delegation requires no training of another person. Someone in your home our
office already has the skills to do these tasks
•Delegate these tasks within the next 7 days
Soon
•These task may require you to hire someone, or train so
•Create a time line for getting these task delegated. Make this no more than 30 days
Throw
•Upon reviewing all the items on your plate, these are task that you have deemed
unnecessary. They may be repetitive, duplicating work, or no longer provide value to
your home or office.
• Stop These Tasks IMMEDIATELY!

Once you Delegate
• Don’t be too quick to take things back! This is a
change, so you will need to leave room for some
discomfort and adjustment
• Be prepared for the work to be done, but maybe
differently from how you would do it! As long as
quality is intact, let go of the exact hows!
• Delegate, but don’t abdicate – meaning check in on
the person you’ve delegated to. Make sure they
understand the task and the expectations.

Set Up a Quarterly Review
Now that you have delegated, go into your
calendar and add a quarterly reminder to
review your tasks. Review for the following:
•Does it still make sense to delegate your
delegated tasks?
•Are there new tasks that should be delegated?
•Are the people you are delegating to the right
people, is this working?
