Ketodiet with type 1 diabetes
Ivan Gonzalez Just now · 9 min read
So here is my answer. Diabetes Choose Life is for all types of diabetics and pre-
diabetics. It has been designed to be useful to anyone who reads it, even those
without diabetes. Indeed, the type of diet and lifestyle that I describe there seem
appropriate and beneficial for the majority of people in the majority of situations.
And the life of type 1 diabetics could be made easier by my approach. But the killer
question, the one on the tip of the lips of my interlocutors, is not really whether
taking care of yourself is good for your health. Everyone knows that. The question
they are really asking is: “Can type 1 diabetics go without insulin?”
〉〉 Discover more Keto diets here
In theory, no, they can’t. Type 1 diabetics are insulin dependent, so they cannot live
without insulin injections. My answer is more complex: between the bad diagnoses,
the few testimonies read here and there, the various cumulative alternative
methods and the serious lack of scientific studies and experiments on the subject, it
seems dangerous to me to assert anything. is. Dangerous to say yes (and risk
influencing irresponsible and damaging attitudes, or giving false hope), dangerous
to say no (and demotivate in advance people who could have found solutions). Here
is the state of my knowledge on the subject.
My experience
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in December 2000. What was my surprise to
learn, in 2008, that I could do without insulin and have mostly normal blood sugar
levels by changing my diet and taking drugs. medicinal plants. My surprise and, to a
certain point, my anger: had I been lied to all this time? Is Type 1 Diabetes Not Really
Insulin Dependent? This reaction lasted until June 2013, when we did genetic tests: I

am not type 1 diabetic, I am MODY type 3. Oops! What I thought I knew about type 1
therefore applies to type MODY 3.
In any case, I was misdiagnosed, I can’t be the only one that has happened (read
below). It may therefore be relevant to check our real case of diabetes with our
doctors, and to react accordingly. If our pancreas still produces insulin, even if it is
very little, who knows if a drastic change in lifestyle could not help us without the
needles?
Misdiagnosis
By going through the scientific studies necessary to document my book, I learned
that it is relatively common to misunderstand the diagnosis of different types of
diabetes , especially MODY. Indeed, contrary to what most non-specialists, including
physicians, know, there are many more than two types of diabetes, and their
characteristics can be intertwined. For example, it is common for type 1 diabetics to
also suffer from insulin resistance which causes type 2 diabetes.
Here is another probable example of misdiagnosis: that of my older sister Ariane,
who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. As it was discovered when she was 34
years old, and through a simple routine examination, she was told that she had type
2 diabetes.
She is thin, has a very good lifestyle, and is unlikely to suffer from insulin resistance:
she has been vegetarian (with more or less monthly variations by “social
convention”) for about 20 years. Everything suggests that she is as MODY 3 diabetic
as her mother, grandfather, aunt, uncle, and younger sister (myself) would be. Our
diabetes behaves relatively in the same way, and it is genetically established that
50% of the children of type MODY 3 diabetics develop it: it is an autosomal dominant
disease. It fits with our family environment.
But her doctor didn’t know it (there seems to be little communication between
researchers and practitioners in the field), is probably overwhelmed, and genetic
tests are expensive… In short; you will be happy to know that although she is early
in the process of managing her disease, eating a plant-based, unprocessed diet, free
from concentrated sugars, being active and taking some herbal remedies, she seems
control your diabetes well without medication.
Some testimonials
In my reading I have read and seen the (non-scientific, but consider nonetheless)
testimonials of a few people diagnosed with Type 1 and living without insulin several
years later.
The first case is that of Sergei Boutenko, who became a vegan and raw eater shortly
after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, whose blood sugar levels stabilized
thanks to diet and who still lives without insulin (and without symptoms) for some
15 years. later.
The second case I heard about was that of Kirt Tyson, an athlete who participated in
a program that the movie “ Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 days ” is
promoting. As an adult, he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when we saw his
blood sugar levels so high, then he was called back after blood tests to tell him that
he had the antibodies: he was therefore type diabetic. 1. In all cases, he managed to
dispense with insulin by eating raw and vegetable for 30 days, then he continued
the mainly raw vegetable diet and became a naturopathic doctor.
I met (in person, thanks to social networks) a “real” type 1 diabetic, Julie, on insulin
therapy for several decades, with glycated hemoglobins to around 6%, who reduced
her insulin doses by more than 90% by becoming vegan and mainly raw food. She
started by cutting out gluten and dairy, then looked deeper. She does not take any
herbal remedies, but is currently testing with enzyme supplements to promote
pancreatic β cells . She has just informed me that according to her latest blood
results, she is producing a little insulin, more than before. To be continued!
I am also part of a group of people seeking a cure for type 1 diabetes. It brings
together several specialists and parents of diabetic children, more focused on
medical research than on food. I regularly read there testimonials of reduced insulin
needs thanks to herbal remedies or mineral supplements like chromium, zinc and a
few others. Nothing miraculous yet, but a lot of promising information.
In the spring of 2013, I prepared food for a camp for teenagers with type 1 diabetes
for a whole weekend. Despite my warning to cut back on medication, one afternoon
several young people had hypoglycaemia: they did not expect my meal to require so
little insulin. It’s a meal, once, on less than a dozen children, but it really made me
want to test it longer on more people … and see how far we can reduce the doses
simply by modifying the diet.
I have read here and there a few other testimonials from type 1 diabetics claiming to
be insulin-independent, but nothing as durable over time as the examples of Sergei
Boutenko or Kirt Tyson, who still speak of it several years later and who are
relatively easy to contact.
Cumulative alternative methods
I have also read testimonials from people who have drastically reduced their insulin
doses by adopting a plant-based, unprocessed diet, or by adopting one or the other
of different alternative methods: mineral supplements, vitamins, herbal remedies,
sports, yoga, medication, fasting, etc.
In my case, no single method allowed me to have normal blood sugar levels. It is a
combination of several methods that has worked and still does. I regularly read
someone’s testimony and say to myself: bravo, it’s great what you do, but just that !
It would just be necessary to add a small element, and the chances of success would
increase!
Conversely, I sometimes read that certain herbal remedies or methods do not work.
(I even said it a long time ago. After drinking an herbal tea made from raspberry
leaves which are known to reduce menstrual cramps, mine had not disappeared! It
was by increasing the amount of herbal tea that I could see a difference, and by
changing my diet.) By themselves, I’m afraid that is often the case. Each medicinal
plant and each approach has its own mode of action and sphere of influence. A
tablespoon of ground flax seeds a day is not enough to regulate blood sugar,
especially if you drink 10 soft drinks on the side. But it does have an effect
nonetheless. It is the sum of all our habits that is decisive.
Serious lack of scientific studies and experiments
Since we “know” that it is impossible for a type 1 diabetic to do without insulin,
many do not even try to look any further. When we are told over and over again,
from several serious and sincere sources, that something is impossible, it is rare
that we feel the energy to go check it out. What’s the point? However, it is by looking
where we did not look before we made discoveries. If I had listened to my doctors, I
would still take insulin 4 times a day, yet I have been living without any medication
for almost 6 years. It is clear that there is still much, much to study on this issue.
There is an abundance of in-depth research but little comprehensive research. I
would like to be able to influence scientists and type 1 diabetics to do research over
several years including the various factors that I perceive to be influential.
Cumulated in a single study. As long as it has not been done, we can only continue
to assert that it has not been done.
Current scientific studies
First and foremost, I must stress that whole plant-based diets are very, very
scientifically documented, and accepted as possibly the healthiest and most
nutritious, as long as they are supplemented with vitamin B12 and vitamin D in
winter.
To this end, I am only quoting a study dating from 2013, which invites doctors to
recommend such a diet… ideally to all their patients. Read it, it is very accessible!
〉〉 Discover more Keto diets here
If you are not convinced by the urgent need to modify your diet to include whole
plants and exclude the rest . Each pro-plant-food claim is supported by several
scientific studies. Hours of fun guaranteed!
Inspired by different herbalist traditions, some scientists have studied the effect of
medicinal plants on the glucose levels of type 1 diabetics. I am writing a few of them
below. Do not hesitate to send me when you find some!
If I were type 1 diabetic
In all cases, and regardless of our treatment, it is more complicated to control blood
sugar for a person with type 1 diabetes than for all other types of diabetics. There is
no way out. Type 1 diabetics, like most MODYs, in addition to a healthy diet and
lifestyle, would also benefit from reducing some sources of carbohydrates.
Don’t get me wrong, we are human: carbohydrates are our number one source of
energy, for everyone. I do not encourage the low carb diets which continue to wreak
havoc decades after being denounced by scientists. (1160 peer-reviewed scientific
references denouncing high-fat, low-carb diets) We really need carbs! And their
best source comes from whole, unprocessed and refined plants.
In bulk, here are a few tips that I would adopt if I had type 1 diabetes:
Eat plant-based, organic, whole and unrefined
Eat a large serving of raw foods, especially vegetables, greens, sprouts, and fruits
Favor berries and acidic fruits over sweeter fruits such as bananas and dates
Use dehydrated fruit to sweeten rare desserts or garnish breakfast cereals.
Cook mostly non-carbohydrate vegetables like broccoli, mushrooms and asparagus
rather than carrots, onions and sweet potatoes
Favor steaming, ideally leaving crunchy vegetables
Eat legumes and whole grains, in smaller quantities, to accompany salads
Eat nuts, seeds, ideally soaked or dry cooked, slowly, in moderate amounts
Drink hypoglycemic herbal teas and incorporate medicinal plant powders into meals
Get daily physical exercise. Adopt the bicycle as the main means of transport. Practice
the sports that suit us.
Avoid eating more than enough. Leave the table with a full appetite, not a heavy belly
Slow down, take the time to sleep well, do what we love
Basically, I’m already implementing all of these recommendations. They bring me
many more benefits than normal blood sugar levels. Of course, if I had type 1
diabetes, I would have to be even more careful about the raw / cooked proportions
and the doses of the fruits and herbs.
To conclude, I repeat: you do not discover something before you have discovered it.
Either way, there’s no point in panicking or throwing everything out the window. It
is better to take it slowly and measure our blood sugar very regularly when making
changes that can affect blood sugar. And to gradually adapt our doses of
medication, while maintaining our medical monitoring.

  • 1. Ivan Gonzalez About Follow Ketodiet with type 1 diabetes Ivan Gonzalez Just now · 9 min read So here is my answer. Diabetes Choose Life is for all types of diabetics and pre- diabetics. It has been designed to be useful to anyone who reads it, even those without diabetes. Indeed, the type of diet and lifestyle that I describe there seem appropriate and beneficial for the majority of people in the majority of situations. And the life of type 1 diabetics could be made easier by my approach. But the killer question, the one on the tip of the lips of my interlocutors, is not really whether taking care of yourself is good for your health. Everyone knows that. The question they are really asking is: “Can type 1 diabetics go without insulin?” 〉〉 Discover more Keto diets here In theory, no, they can’t. Type 1 diabetics are insulin dependent, so they cannot live without insulin injections. My answer is more complex: between the bad diagnoses, the few testimonies read here and there, the various cumulative alternative methods and the serious lack of scientific studies and experiments on the subject, it seems dangerous to me to assert anything. is. Dangerous to say yes (and risk influencing irresponsible and damaging attitudes, or giving false hope), dangerous to say no (and demotivate in advance people who could have found solutions). Here is the state of my knowledge on the subject. My experience I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in December 2000. What was my surprise to learn, in 2008, that I could do without insulin and have mostly normal blood sugar levels by changing my diet and taking drugs. medicinal plants. My surprise and, to a certain point, my anger: had I been lied to all this time? Is Type 1 Diabetes Not Really Insulin Dependent? This reaction lasted until June 2013, when we did genetic tests: I Get started Open in app
  • 2. am not type 1 diabetic, I am MODY type 3. Oops! What I thought I knew about type 1 therefore applies to type MODY 3. In any case, I was misdiagnosed, I can’t be the only one that has happened (read below). It may therefore be relevant to check our real case of diabetes with our doctors, and to react accordingly. If our pancreas still produces insulin, even if it is very little, who knows if a drastic change in lifestyle could not help us without the needles? Misdiagnosis By going through the scientific studies necessary to document my book, I learned that it is relatively common to misunderstand the diagnosis of different types of diabetes , especially MODY. Indeed, contrary to what most non-specialists, including physicians, know, there are many more than two types of diabetes, and their characteristics can be intertwined. For example, it is common for type 1 diabetics to also suffer from insulin resistance which causes type 2 diabetes. Here is another probable example of misdiagnosis: that of my older sister Ariane, who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. As it was discovered when she was 34 years old, and through a simple routine examination, she was told that she had type 2 diabetes. She is thin, has a very good lifestyle, and is unlikely to suffer from insulin resistance: she has been vegetarian (with more or less monthly variations by “social convention”) for about 20 years. Everything suggests that she is as MODY 3 diabetic as her mother, grandfather, aunt, uncle, and younger sister (myself) would be. Our diabetes behaves relatively in the same way, and it is genetically established that 50% of the children of type MODY 3 diabetics develop it: it is an autosomal dominant disease. It fits with our family environment. But her doctor didn’t know it (there seems to be little communication between researchers and practitioners in the field), is probably overwhelmed, and genetic tests are expensive… In short; you will be happy to know that although she is early in the process of managing her disease, eating a plant-based, unprocessed diet, free from concentrated sugars, being active and taking some herbal remedies, she seems control your diabetes well without medication. Some testimonials In my reading I have read and seen the (non-scientific, but consider nonetheless) testimonials of a few people diagnosed with Type 1 and living without insulin several years later.
  • 3. The first case is that of Sergei Boutenko, who became a vegan and raw eater shortly after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, whose blood sugar levels stabilized thanks to diet and who still lives without insulin (and without symptoms) for some 15 years. later. The second case I heard about was that of Kirt Tyson, an athlete who participated in a program that the movie “ Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 days ” is promoting. As an adult, he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when we saw his blood sugar levels so high, then he was called back after blood tests to tell him that he had the antibodies: he was therefore type diabetic. 1. In all cases, he managed to dispense with insulin by eating raw and vegetable for 30 days, then he continued the mainly raw vegetable diet and became a naturopathic doctor. I met (in person, thanks to social networks) a “real” type 1 diabetic, Julie, on insulin therapy for several decades, with glycated hemoglobins to around 6%, who reduced her insulin doses by more than 90% by becoming vegan and mainly raw food. She started by cutting out gluten and dairy, then looked deeper. She does not take any herbal remedies, but is currently testing with enzyme supplements to promote pancreatic β cells . She has just informed me that according to her latest blood results, she is producing a little insulin, more than before. To be continued! I am also part of a group of people seeking a cure for type 1 diabetes. It brings together several specialists and parents of diabetic children, more focused on medical research than on food. I regularly read there testimonials of reduced insulin needs thanks to herbal remedies or mineral supplements like chromium, zinc and a few others. Nothing miraculous yet, but a lot of promising information. In the spring of 2013, I prepared food for a camp for teenagers with type 1 diabetes for a whole weekend. Despite my warning to cut back on medication, one afternoon several young people had hypoglycaemia: they did not expect my meal to require so little insulin. It’s a meal, once, on less than a dozen children, but it really made me want to test it longer on more people … and see how far we can reduce the doses simply by modifying the diet. I have read here and there a few other testimonials from type 1 diabetics claiming to be insulin-independent, but nothing as durable over time as the examples of Sergei Boutenko or Kirt Tyson, who still speak of it several years later and who are relatively easy to contact. Cumulative alternative methods
  • 4. I have also read testimonials from people who have drastically reduced their insulin doses by adopting a plant-based, unprocessed diet, or by adopting one or the other of different alternative methods: mineral supplements, vitamins, herbal remedies, sports, yoga, medication, fasting, etc. In my case, no single method allowed me to have normal blood sugar levels. It is a combination of several methods that has worked and still does. I regularly read someone’s testimony and say to myself: bravo, it’s great what you do, but just that ! It would just be necessary to add a small element, and the chances of success would increase! Conversely, I sometimes read that certain herbal remedies or methods do not work. (I even said it a long time ago. After drinking an herbal tea made from raspberry leaves which are known to reduce menstrual cramps, mine had not disappeared! It was by increasing the amount of herbal tea that I could see a difference, and by changing my diet.) By themselves, I’m afraid that is often the case. Each medicinal plant and each approach has its own mode of action and sphere of influence. A tablespoon of ground flax seeds a day is not enough to regulate blood sugar, especially if you drink 10 soft drinks on the side. But it does have an effect nonetheless. It is the sum of all our habits that is decisive. Serious lack of scientific studies and experiments Since we “know” that it is impossible for a type 1 diabetic to do without insulin, many do not even try to look any further. When we are told over and over again, from several serious and sincere sources, that something is impossible, it is rare that we feel the energy to go check it out. What’s the point? However, it is by looking where we did not look before we made discoveries. If I had listened to my doctors, I would still take insulin 4 times a day, yet I have been living without any medication for almost 6 years. It is clear that there is still much, much to study on this issue. There is an abundance of in-depth research but little comprehensive research. I would like to be able to influence scientists and type 1 diabetics to do research over several years including the various factors that I perceive to be influential. Cumulated in a single study. As long as it has not been done, we can only continue to assert that it has not been done. Current scientific studies First and foremost, I must stress that whole plant-based diets are very, very scientifically documented, and accepted as possibly the healthiest and most nutritious, as long as they are supplemented with vitamin B12 and vitamin D in winter.
  • 5. To this end, I am only quoting a study dating from 2013, which invites doctors to recommend such a diet… ideally to all their patients. Read it, it is very accessible! 〉〉 Discover more Keto diets here If you are not convinced by the urgent need to modify your diet to include whole plants and exclude the rest . Each pro-plant-food claim is supported by several scientific studies. Hours of fun guaranteed! Inspired by different herbalist traditions, some scientists have studied the effect of medicinal plants on the glucose levels of type 1 diabetics. I am writing a few of them below. Do not hesitate to send me when you find some! If I were type 1 diabetic In all cases, and regardless of our treatment, it is more complicated to control blood sugar for a person with type 1 diabetes than for all other types of diabetics. There is no way out. Type 1 diabetics, like most MODYs, in addition to a healthy diet and lifestyle, would also benefit from reducing some sources of carbohydrates. Don’t get me wrong, we are human: carbohydrates are our number one source of energy, for everyone. I do not encourage the low carb diets which continue to wreak havoc decades after being denounced by scientists. (1160 peer-reviewed scientific references denouncing high-fat, low-carb diets) We really need carbs! And their best source comes from whole, unprocessed and refined plants. In bulk, here are a few tips that I would adopt if I had type 1 diabetes: Eat plant-based, organic, whole and unrefined Eat a large serving of raw foods, especially vegetables, greens, sprouts, and fruits Favor berries and acidic fruits over sweeter fruits such as bananas and dates Use dehydrated fruit to sweeten rare desserts or garnish breakfast cereals. Cook mostly non-carbohydrate vegetables like broccoli, mushrooms and asparagus rather than carrots, onions and sweet potatoes Favor steaming, ideally leaving crunchy vegetables Eat legumes and whole grains, in smaller quantities, to accompany salads Eat nuts, seeds, ideally soaked or dry cooked, slowly, in moderate amounts Drink hypoglycemic herbal teas and incorporate medicinal plant powders into meals
  • 6. Get daily physical exercise. Adopt the bicycle as the main means of transport. Practice the sports that suit us. Avoid eating more than enough. Leave the table with a full appetite, not a heavy belly Slow down, take the time to sleep well, do what we love Basically, I’m already implementing all of these recommendations. They bring me many more benefits than normal blood sugar levels. Of course, if I had type 1 diabetes, I would have to be even more careful about the raw / cooked proportions and the doses of the fruits and herbs. To conclude, I repeat: you do not discover something before you have discovered it. Either way, there’s no point in panicking or throwing everything out the window. It is better to take it slowly and measure our blood sugar very regularly when making changes that can affect blood sugar. And to gradually adapt our doses of medication, while maintaining our medical monitoring. 〉〉 Discover more Keto diets here And you, what are your experiences and knowledge in relation to the independent treatment of type 1 diabetes?
