Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Pengertian Kesantunan Kesantunan (politiness), kesopansantunan, atau etiket adalah tatacara, adab, atau
kebiasaan yang berlaku dalam masyarakat. Kesantunan merupakan aturan perilaku yang ditetapkan dan
disetujui bersama-sama oleh suatu masyarakat tertentu ..
Empat ’Kayu-ukur’ Kesantunan
Kesantunan semasa berhubung dalam masyarakat, dinilai menjangkau masa yang lama.
Kesantunan mengikut tempat, majlis, situasi tertentu.
Kesantunan dalam hubungan menegak, iaitu orang atasan dengan bawahan, orang tua dengan muda.
Kesantunan penampilan dan perawakan.
Jenis Kesantunan 1. Kesantunan Berpakaian
Dalam kesantunan (berpakaian , berdandan), ada dua hal yang perlu diperhatikan. Pertama, berpakaianlah yang
sopan di tempat umum, hindarilah pakaian yang dapat merangsang orang lain terutama berlainan jantina.
Elakkan seperti pakaian menjolok mata , menampakkan bahagian badan yang pada umumnya ditutup. Kedua,
berpakaianlah yang rapi dan sesuai dengan keadaan, iaitu berpakaian resmi pada acara resmi, berpakaian santai
pada situasi santai, berpakaian renang pada waktu renang. Betapapun mahalnya pakaian renang, tidak akan
sesuai apabila dipakai dalam suatu acara resmi.
2 Kesantunan tingkah laku
Kesantunan perbuatan ialah tatacara bertindak atau gerak-gerik ketika menghadapi sesuatu atau dalam situasi
tertentu.misalnya ketika menerima tetamu, bertandang ke rumah orang, duduk di bilik darjah , menghadapi
orang yang kita hormati, berjalan di tempat umum, menunggu giliran ,
3. Kesantunan Berbahasa
Kesantunan berbahasa tercermin dalam tatacara berkomunikasi secara verbal. Ketika berkomunikasi, kita perlu
merujuk pada norma-norma budaya, tidak hanya sekedar menyampaikan idea yang kita fikirkan. Tatacara
berbahasa harus sesuai dengan unsur-unsur budaya yang ada dalam masyarakat tempat hidup dan
2. dipergunannya suatu bahasa dalam berkomunikasi. Apabila tatacara berbahasa seseorang tidak sesuai dengan
norma-norma budaya, maka akan mendapatkan nilai negatif, misalnya dituduh sebagai orang yang sombong,
angkuh, tak acuh, tidak beradat, bahkan tidak berbudaya.
Perkara yang perlu difikirkan semasa berbicara
1. Apa yang sebaiknya dikatakan pada waktu dan keadaan tertentu?. 2. Ragam bahasa apa yang sewajarnya
dipakai dalam situasi tertentu?. 3. Bila dan bagaimana giliran bercakap dan jeda tertentu ?. 4. Bagaimana
mengatur kenyaringan suara ketika bercakap. 5. Bagaimana sikap dan gerak-geri ketika bercakap6. Bila perlu
diam dan menamatkan percakapan. .
Aspek Kesantunan Berbahasa
1.
Cara sapaan lisan/bertulis menurut bahasa Melayu dengan sopan santun supaya tidak dianggap sebagai biadab
atau tidak berbudi bahasa.
2.
Kehalusan budi bahasa dalam memakai atau menggunakan bahasa atau kesopanan ketika menggunakan bahasa.
3.
Dalam kesantunan berbahasa, bahasa Melayu mempunyai sistem sapaan dan panggilan yang tersendiri.
4.
Sistem sapaan dan panggilan ini melibatkan penggabungan gelaran, rujukan hormat dan ganti nama.
5.
Kesantunan berbahasa mempunyai ciri-ciri yang tertentu. Penggunaan kosa kata dan ganti nama diberi perhatian
khusus agar sesuai dengan kedudukan, pangkat, umur, dan keakraban hubungan.

3. Bahasa halus mengikut Asmah Haji Omar ``disamakan dengan pendidikan yang penuh dengan adab tata tertib.''

Kesantunan berbahasa juga dikaitkan dengan penggunaan bahasa halus, termasuk di dalamnya ialah laras
bahasa istana. Antara ungkapan berkenaan ialah patik, tuanku, berangkat, bersiram, bersemayam, junjung kasih,
bercemar duli dan sebagainya.

Kata dan ungkapan bertatasusila banyak digunakan dalam keadaan biasa. Pemilihan kata dan ungkapan cuma
bergantung kepada kedudukan, pangkat, umur dan keakraban hubungan.

Digunakan untuk orang lelaki atau permepuan yang lebih muda daripada kendiri.

Jenama kekeluargaan terbahagi kepada:
i. Jenama kekeluargaan pertalian darah (Pak Long, Mak Long, Pak Ngah, Mak Ngah, Pak Lang, Mak Lang, Pak
Njang, Mak Njang, Pak Cik, Mak Cik, Pak Su, Mak Su.
Gabungan nama kekeluargaan asas (Abang (bang) dan Kak dengan jenama kekeluargaan pertalian darah hanya
terbatas kepada Long, Ngah dan Cik seperti Bang Long, Kak Long, Bang Ngah, Kak Ngah, Bang Cik dan Kak Cik.
ii. Jenama kekeluargaan ikatan perkahwinan
Diwakili oleh kata menantu, mentua dan ipar. (Pak Mentua, Mak Mentua dan Tok Mentua). Ipar digunakan
untuk merujuk kepada ahli-ahli dalam keluarga suami atau isteri selain menantu danmentua. Contoh: abang
ipar, kak ipar, adik ipar mak long ipar, mak ngah ipar dan sebagainya.

4. Gelaran Pergaulan Bebas
Biasanya Cik digunakan untuk perempuan yang belum berkahwin, manakala Encik untuk lelaki sahaja.

Gelaran Pergaulan Tak Bersahaja (Formal)
Tuan - digunakan untuk lelaki yang lebih tinggi pangkatnya daripada kendiri, dan orang lelaki bergelar Haji,
Doktor, Profesor dan Syed.
Encik, Cik - boleh digunakan untuk orang lelaki yag lebih tinggi pangkatnya, daripada kendiri seperti Encik
Ahmad atau Cik Ahmad.
Puan - untuk perempuan sahaj ayang pangkatnya lebih tinggi daripada kendiri, dan perempuan yang mempunyai
gelaran Doktor, Profesor dan sebagainya.
Saudara - digunakan untuk orang lelaki atau perempuan yang seumur dengankendiri atau lebih muda, dan
hubungannya belum rapat dewngan kendiri atau digunakan dalam rujukan kepada ahli-ahli dalam
mesyuarat,perbahasan dan sebagainya.
Saudari - digunakan untuk perempuan sahaja dalam konteks yang sama dengan penggunaan gelaran saudara.
Tetuan - hanya digunakan dalam surat rasmi yang ditujukan kepada para pemilik atau pentadbir syarikat
perniagaan (termausk syarikat guaman) seperti: Tetuan Syarikat Sinaran Sdn. Bhd.)

Gelaran Warisan
Contoh Raja (Perak, Selangor), Pangeran, Pangeran Anak, Pangeran Muda (Brunei Darussalam) Tengku
(Kelantan, Pahang, Kedah, Terengganu).
Gelaran keturunan orang-orang besar; Megat dan Puteri (Perak), Nik (Kelantan), Wan (Kelantan, Terengganu),
Abang (Sarawak); Datu (Sabah), Awangku, Pangeran dan Dayangku (Brunei Darussalam), Tan (di Kedah) dan
Tun (Terengganu)
Gelaran warisan kepada keturunan Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. seperti syed atau sayid bagi lelaki dan Syarifah bagi
perempuan. Sesetengah pihak mengatakan bahawa gelaran Syarif, Syekh dan Siti juga tergolong ke dalam gelaran
jenis ini.
Gelaran warisan daripada keturunan yang berasal dari luar Malaysia seperti Raden (Jawa), Daeng (Bugis), Sidi,
Sutan (Minangkabau), Teuku dan Teungku (Aceh).

Gelaran Kurniaan, Tun, Toh Puan, Puan Sri, Datuk (Datuk Seri, Datuk Paduka, Datuk Setia), Datuk (Satuk
Patingi, Datuk Amar), Datin Paduka (gelaran yang dikurniakan oleh kerajaan negeri Selangor), Toh Puan (isteri
kepada datuk di Terengganu)
Pendeta Za'aba (gelaran kurniaan yahng diberikan oleh pertubuhan seperti Kongres Bahasa Melayu Ketiga
5. (1956). Gelaran Bapa Kemerdekaan kepada Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.
