“Life, Death and Betrayal” By: Kendra Johnson
Katherine Anne Porter “Often concerned with the themes of justice, betrayal and the unforgiving nature of the human race, Porter’s writings occupied the space where the personal and political meet. “ She examined the dark side of the common person throughout many of her works, focusing on death, betrayal and the source of human evil. Porter often touched on uncomfortable realities of her time and situations that she could somewhat relate too. She even stated that she would initially intend on write strictly autobiographical material but often because of her “creative instincts for storytelling”, she would end up down a different path.
“Ship of Fools” Porter wrote that this title “Ship of Fools” symbolizes “the ship of this world on its voyage to eternity.” It focuses on several different cultures and how they are portrayed through others view. Once again this story started out as an autobiography from Porter’s trip from Mexico to Europe in 1931. Another story that shows a common them e of life and also relates to much of her own life experiences.
“Flowering Judas” – a theme of betrayal Exploring the quandary of a sheltered young American woman who unites forces with Mexican revolutionaries before she learns about the groups vicious and heartless acts. It emphasizes on the three main aspects of Porter’s common focus in her writings: love, betrayal and death.
“Pale Horse, Pale Rider”- life and death “Pale Horse, Pale Rider” is a collection of three short novels by Porter that tells of a relationship between a newspaper woman and a solider during the 1900’s flu epidemic. The woman recovers from the flu only to find out that the solider she had a relationship with has died . All the while he probably caught the virus from her , while caring for her. The majority of this story is autobiographical in a sense. During World War 1 Porter was working as a reporter in Denver, while there she fell in love with a lieutenant. She contracted the flu during the epidemic and nearly died. This story shows how she related her own experiences with the characters but would quickly stray from that path due to her artistic abilities.
Common Themes Many of Porter’s works had a common theme among them. She often found peace in being able to escape her past experiences through her characters. Life, death and betrayal were often the themes seen in a lot of her stories. These were topics that she could relate most too. Porter was able to show such a wide variety of emotions, from “ cold realism to measureless compassion” her stories were full of passion.
