Dear Friends & Supporters,
Housing is essential to our mission of ending poverty and homelessness among veterans, but the availability of affordable housing in the San Francisco Bay Area is scarce. This scarcity is well-known and has created numerous challenges in trying to end veteran homeless. Over the last six years, we have made tremendous strides and have housed more than 40 percent of all homeless veterans in San Francisco. This reduction has occurred while the city has grappled with a 23 percent overall increase in homelessness.
At any given time, we have the capacity to house 441 veterans. With a new housing site in Mission Bay, we will be able to house another 62 veterans and 56 families. We are proud to announce that we will be breaking ground on our eighth housing site in Mission Bay on November 21st. Most of the veterans who reside with us are seniors who earn less and are typically more disabled than non-veterans of similar age and situation. However, we recognize that veterans with histories of chronic
homelessness have unique needs and require wrap-around care. Under this model, we work to foster a community that is supportive and engaged, providing veterans with access to resources they need to become self-sufficient.
The path to self-sufficiency starts with housing but as you will find out, it does not end there. This path can include mental health or substance abuse counseling, support groups, educational programs, workshops, and engaging in a wide array of community activities. In this issue, we have featured community activities to show our supporters an inside look at our residentsâ lives and how these activities are an essential part of their reintegration to society. We have also featured volunteer engagement activities that have helped give us the opportunity to beautify the housing sites where our veterans live.
Swords to Plowshares has operated successful housing programs since 1987 and will continue to work to end poverty and homelessness among veterans. Please join us in our mission to end veteran homelessness by speaking with your local representative voicing your support for more housing for veterans and sharing any news and events about us online to help us generate awareness about our cause.
Thank you,
Michael Blecker

Letter from
Keep Evansville Beautiful
Director, Julie Welch
Dear Friends,
I want to thank each and every one of you for attending our first Path to
Beauty Gala. As the new Executive Director of Keep Evansville Beautiful,
I am honored to have all of your support for this fabulous fundraising
event. We hope that you will enjoy yourselves tonight while knowing that
your contributions will enable us to continue and develop new programs
and educational opportunities.
Downtown Evansville is in the midst of a Renaissance of sorts and the
staff of KEB couldnât be more excited. With the hotel and medical school
coming, this is the perfect time to ramp up our anti-littering campaign,
recycling efforts, and beautification projects. We want the Evansvilleâs
image to reflect our love of our city; well-kept and aesthetically appealing
for visitors, entrepreneurs, and especially our residents.
Keep Evansville Beautiful is essential for our cityâs success as we venture
on this Path to Beauty. With improved aesthetic appeal and reduced litter,
we will make a better impression on all who experience Evansville. Also,
by providing these costly services for free, we are saving the city tens of
thousands of dollars each year. The work that we do is not only about
turning ordinary spaces into beautiful places, it is also about improving the
economy and making Evansville more appealing for investors.
Keep Evansville Beautiful would like to thank our staff, board of directors,
auction committee, and volunteers that made this event possible. We are
very gracious for your time, talent, and dedication to a city that we all hold
very dear.
It was once stated that âthe journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single
step.â We would like to invite you today to take that first step with us on
the Path to Beauty.
With Gratitude,
Julie Welch

Baclground of
Keep Evansville Beautiful
Keep Evansville Beautiful started out as Operation City Beautiful in 1972
as an extension of the Chamber of Commerce. The goal from the very start
was to ensure a clean, healthy outdoor environment for all Evansville
residents and visitors. In 1975 we were incorporated as an independent
not-for-profit agency and got to work planting trees, forming improvement
associations, and renovating Garvin Park. In 1995 we started the Cedar
Hall neighborhood association, spearheaded the passage of the public tree
ordinance, and launched an aggressive anti-litter campaign promoting the
litter hotline. In 2004 Operation City Beautiful became Keep Evansville
Beautiful. In 2007 the EVIE program was started, later winning first place
in Litter Prevention and Beautification from Keep America Beautiful. In
2010 we worked hard on landscaping, adopt-a-spots, and even moved
to a new office. 2011 was a big year for us as we started the Gateway
Projects that are still underway to this day. In 2012 we started our Great
American Cleanup program coordinating with the city administration and
the mayorâs Clean Evansville Initiative. With this program we had over
2,000 volunteers help remove litter from the streets of Evansville. Also
that year we dedicated the Ed Ziemer Celebration Garden at 10th and
Vine Street downtown. Since then, we have completed phase one and
phase two of the Gateway Projects, reached over 10,000 students with the
EVIE program, and selected Bob Zasadnyâs âAerial Beautyâ sculpture to
finalize the Airport Gateway Monument. Final funding has been received
for the Airport Gateway monument and the sculpture is currently under
construction. We look forward to the dedication of the Gateway Sculpture
this year and all the other great projects that will be possible from your
generous donations!

Letter from
the President of the Board of Directors,
Laurel Jones
Dear friends and benefactors of Keep Evansville Beautiful,
On behalf of the Board of Directors Committee Members and staff, I would
like to welcome you to our very first Path to Beauty Gala. We are honored
and grateful to have each and every one of you here tonight. I hope my
passion for the city can not only be reflected through this event, but also
through my past, present and future actions. I am ecstatic to see the
Evansville community support our mission, of a healthy, inviting, outdoor
environment for all.
The Gala would not be possible without the continued support of our Board
of Directors, Volunteers and Benefactors. Keep Evansville Beautiful would
like to thank all who donated their time and talent to take this event from an
idea to a reality. We cannot express how thankful we are for your help.
For more than 40 years, Keep Evansville Beautiful has been dedicated to
creating a cleaner, more beautiful community through education and active
community involvement. Our programs such as, EVIE Retrieves, Cans for
Cash and Great American Cleanup come full circle, from teaching kids to
recycle to engaging the community to pick up litter.
Now is a very special time for the city that we love so much. We have seen
the presence the Ford Center has brought to our downtown and we are
looking forward to the great changes that are to come. The development
of a new hotel and the new IU School of Medicine, along with the plans to
incorporate new sidewalks and landscaping all contribute to making our
downtown more vibrant. We hope you will join with us on the Path to
Beauty.
Thank you again for your support of our organization. We take great pride
in our mission and our accomplishments, with your help we can become a
cleaner community.
With gratitude,
Laurel Jones

Is your network safe? Mark Miller, president and senior
network analyst with PC Quest Technologies, offers the follow-
ing to assist you in grading your network security.
XX Antivirus: Do you have a trusted antivirus program that
can be managed from the server? This costs about $30-
$40 per computer per year and has a single interface that
will summarize the protection of all computers in your
network. It will show you which computers are protected
and which are not, which have had viruses, what the viruses
were, if they were removed or are still there, and when this
all occurred. A properly managed antivirus will save 20
percent or more in antivirus removals and in downtime.
XX Firewall: Do you have a properly configured commercial- or
enterprise-level firewall? If this was purchased off the shelf at
a big box store, the chances of having adequate protection is
slim. Depending on your network size and Internet bandwidth
requirements, most small to mid-size businesses will invest
between $400 and $1,800 on a good firewall. Itisthemost
importantpieceofequipmentinthenetwork-security
equation. You should strongly consider a UTM (unified threat
management) device with firewall level antivirus, website
blocking, intrusion detection and prevention, etc. Some can
even be specifically configured to prevent viruses such as the
Cryptolocker, which encrypts your files and cannot be undone
without a decryption key.
XX Computer-use policy: Do you have a company-wide
âcomputer-use policyâ in place? This should advise your staff
what proper Internet use is and what the repercussions are
for abusing it. When adhered to, these policies can save you
40 percent on unnecessary computer repairs.
XX Passwords: Does your network require you to change
passwords periodically? I know this is a real pain, but necessary.
If you answered ânoâ to any of the above, your network is
vulnerable and you should contact your IT vendor immediately to
discuss corrective measures.n
