1. Katy Perry is known for her unique style, this is
displayed well in her music videos which are
largely based on the narrative, her music videos
are widely enjoyed as they are more of a story
and entertain the audience. For this reason I
think she is a good artist to research music videos
on, and whilst researching Katy Perry I gained a
lot of ideas of what to do on my own music video.
Here is a few of the music videos I analysed made
by Katy Perry.
2. The storyline in the music video for ‘Roar’ is that Katy is a shy and easily scared
companion to a vain man on an airplane which has crashed in the middle of a
jungle, at first Katy is really scared and follows the man whilst holding his bags
until he gets eaten by a tiger, then, Katy has to survive on her own. Katy is
shown to be scared by spiders, a crocodile and the dark until she gains more
confidence by activating her inner tiger and begins to control the animals,
using an elephant as a shower, cleaning the crocodiles teeth and befriending a
monkey, eventually she becomes even more confident to the point she is like
the queen of the jungle which becomes clear when she has made an outfit out
of leaves and fur and where she beats a tiger at roaring. When she has
conquered the tiger she gets along with the animals by painting the elephants
nails and taking pictures with the monkey, and sitting in a throne surrounded
by animals. Near to the end of the music video Katy is seen sleeping in an
airplane seat which makes the audience think she dreamt the whole situation
but then she wakes up and walks out of the plane wreck back into the jungle.
The video goes back into an effect to seem as if it a book as it ends. I like this
music video as the lyrics match the narrative and the video is entertaining yet
also sends a positive message to fans. This music video does focus on the
narrative but throughout the video Katy sings whilst acting which I think is a
good idea as it ties the song and the video together.
3. Another music video by Katy Perry is to the song ‘The one that
got away’ which is about an elderly Katy who seems to be in
an empty shell marriage, looking back on her young romance
with a lad that ended badly. The music video consists of her
looking upset and clearly missing someone as well as
flashbacks to this better time where she was young and with
her old boyfriend. As the video goes on the audience see the
cracks in their relationship develop with an argument that
leads the man to drive off, leading him to be in an accident and
fall off a cliff. I like this music video as it goes back and forth
from old and young Katy and it shows how emotional she is
about the situation, the ending is a touching one with the old
Katy going to the place of his death and he is there in her
memory as if she can see him in reality until the song on her
radio cuts off and he disappears. I like the editing in this video
as at one point the old Katy and the young Katy are on the bed
singing together and I think it looks really good and if I can fit it
into my storyline I hope to use something along these lines. I
like how there is a colour difference from the now and the
then as the present is dull and dark whereas the past is shown
as hazy and with a vintage touch, I think this emphasises how
Katy feels about her past and how much she misses it
compared to her life now after all the years. The camerawork
and the editing makes the video run smoothly as the pace of
the video matches the pace of the music.
As with many of Katy’s music video it mainly focuses
on the narrative yet has some performance in it too
as she usually sings in character. I think this is a good
balance of both however in my music video I would
want more performance in there too.
