Kathie has been volunteering at the Day Worker Center for 20 years, taking on various roles such as keeping board meeting notes, updating the database, driving for the family parade, and writing thank you letters. She enjoyed getting to know people at the center and found it a rewarding experience. A specific memory she has is attending the groundbreaking ceremony for the current center location, which was held outdoors in the rain. Volunteering at the center has meant getting to work with people and be a part of the different phases and growth of the organization over the years.

From spending time getting to know compañer@s, to her various
volunteering areas, Kathie has become a very special member of the
Day Worker Center team!
Throughout her 20 years of volunteering at the Center, Kathie's
many volunteering areas have included keeping track of what
happens during Board meetings, helping keep our database up to
date, the official driver during the Mountain View Family Parade,
calling employers for feedback, tabling at festivals and writing
thank you letters for donors. Before the pandemic, Kathie would go
into the office a few times each week and even had her own desk at
the Center! Now she has transitioned to continuing thank you letters
from home.
WHY DID YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER AT THE CENTER?
I knew about the DWC in its inception. I go to St. Joseph’s church in Mountain View and the parish priest there is
actually one of the founders of the DWC. The first office that the DWC had was in the rectory of Saint Joseph’s church
so I was familiar with it for quite a while. Specifically, I chose the Center because I knew about it and was looking for
another volunteer opportunity. I had just wrapped up on another one
that I had been working on for several years and that was ending.
It has been wonderful & challenging. Always new things coming up. Of course it is
a delight to work with Maria all the time and see all the different phases the Center
goes through. It has been a very exciting time.
When we went through the planning and the building of the present Center which was very exciting.
I remember the groundbreaking ceremony for the Center's current location and it was a rainy day.
People were gathered in the building and although it had a roof, rain was leaking in. That is an
outstanding experience that everyone was excited about. I remember everybody was very excited and
the umbrellas inside because it was raining during the ceremony.
