Paper cutting originated in China in the 2nd century and spread along the Silk Road to other parts of Asia and Europe. By the 13th-17th centuries, paper cutting had become an affordable art form for the general populations in many countries. Eastern European nations developed their own names and styles of paper cut decorative art, including Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Jews who borrowed the tradition and called their pieces "reizeleh."
