Both case studies describe adult patients with histories of asthma and tobacco use who suffered cardiac arrests. Jane Doe was found unresponsive by her roommate and underwent 15 minutes of CPR before arriving at the ED in PEA arrest. Despite resuscitation efforts, she developed cerebral edema and herniation, with brain death confirmed on 3/28. John Doe abruptly became dyspneic and collapsed at home, receiving 30 minutes of CPR from his wife and EMS. He was resuscitated but developed diffuse cerebral edema and fixed dilated pupils with no response. Therapeutic hypothermia was initiated but he was declared brain dead on 9/7 and donated organs.
