This study investigates the impact of childhood maltreatment on the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis responses in healthy adults. It finds that individuals with a history of childhood abuse exhibit diminished cortisol and ACTH responses to psychosocial stressors, suggesting that early-life adversity increases the risk for mood and anxiety disorders. The research highlights significant differences in HPA axis reactivity related to past trauma, contributing to the understanding of stress responses in relation to childhood experiences.
