TOOL BOX TALK - Engineering (Craft/Non Craft)
1. Slips, Trip and Falls
Today’s Topic / Issue
What can cause slips trips and falls?
Every year in Britain
slips, trip and falls cause:
• 25% of all over 3 day injuries
• 50% of accidents to passengers
• 30% of all major injuries to employees
Injuries can be severe:
• 90% of major injuries are broken bones
Slips trips and falls cost us
£200,000 a year in damage and
lost production
Walkways:
• Must be cleaned regularly (and
recorded on QAF30)
• Must be clear of obstacles
• Must be clear of trailing wires /
cables / air lines
• Must clear of spillages / kept dry
• Painted lines must be maintained
Trip hazards:
• Trailing cables / hose
• Uneven surfaces
• Floor covering
• Curled mats
• Items in walkways
• Loose debris (nuts / bolts)
• Spills, granules not cleaned up
Stairs and Steps:
Slips, trips and falls on steps are
more likely to result in injury:
• Steps should be even in height
• Be careful when using steps
• Use handrails provided at all times
Step edges should be painted in
anti slip paint
Slipping on floors:
Most slipping incidents involve:
• Wet surfaces (snow, ice, rain)
• Oil leaks, spills
• Mopped floors still wet
Smooth surface are dangerous
when wet!
