This document discusses a meeting of 30 young global justice activists from around the world who gathered in Brazil to discuss collective strategies for social change. The author argues that these "alter-activists" represent an emerging form of participatory citizenship among youth characterized by horizontal organization, networked collaboration, creative direct action, use of new technologies, and organizing alternative spaces. Rather than being a complete break from past movements, alter-activism expands upon features of prior youth movements while being more global, networked, open, and shaped by technology.
