Today we’ll:
Briefly introduce the program
Discuss eligibility and the application process
Share details about each of the four residency options
A total of 8 independent Artist Residency programs have been paired for the first four years of the program. Each residency center in Alaska has been paired with a compatible residency center partner in the lower 48, based on discipline expertise and related factors. Alaskan artists apply for a residency at one specific site in the Lower 48; meanwhile, staff there nominates artists for selection by their counterparts in Alaska for residencies at each of the four sites in state. I’ll describe what each of our four partners in the Lower 48 offers, and how they differ.

The mission of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program is to support and enhance the creativity of artists by providing uninterrupted time for work, reflection, and collegial interaction in a setting of great natural beauty, and to preserve the land on which the Program is situated.
The Djerassi Resident Artists Program is internationally recognized as one of the eminent artist residency programs. We strive to provide the best possible residency experience for artists of superior talent from a diverse range of backgrounds and geographical locations. This residency is reserved for a poet, playwright, or prose writer (creative non-fiction or fiction) or media/film artist
Founded in 1979 by Dr. Carl Djerassi, famous as one of the inventors of the contraceptive pill.
A site-specific sculpture by Bruce Johnson is a short hike from your live-work studio
Djerassi is a traditional time-and-space style residency. It’s located in a relatively rural area about an hour away from San Francisco. You live and work in the same space, and share kitchen facilities with other resident artists from around the world and across disciplines. You typically eat dinner together and prepare your own breakfast and lunch using food supplied by Djerassi.
Normally, residents at Djerassi come for a period of about one month. Effectively, Alaskans in this program go for two consecutive one-month residency sessions. You’ll have the opportunity to go to San Francisco during the four day interim period between residency sessions for an independent stint in the city before returning to begin another month with a new cohort of resident artists.
This residency has been slated for writers, and now that’s been expanded to include film/media artists. So far, playwright Arlitia Jones of Anchorage, nonfiction writing Christine Byl of Healy, and writer Ernestine Hayes of Juneau have all be in residence at Djerassi.
Rasmuson residents reside in one of four Middlebrook Studios, designed by architect Cass Calder Smith. They are just a short walk from the primary building. The four cedar-clad cabins are shaded and sheltered by a freestanding steel roof that carries solar panels. They are arrayed along a hilltop to take best advantage of day-long sun and expansive views.
Writing desk. Ability to make hot water / tea in the room.
Queen sized bed and expansive views.
Djerassi is situated on a private 583 acre ranch in the Santa Cruz mountains. One aspect of their mission is to serve as stewards of the unique and beautiful property, and to preserve the land and use our facilities wisely and efficiently for maximum benefit to the artists and with the least impact on the environment. Since opening in 1979, 117 site-specific sculptures have created on the property.
Sculptures and trails and wildlife
This residency is reserved for a poet, playwright, or prose writer (creative non-fiction or fiction) or media/film artist
On the other end of the spectrum and the country from Djerassi, McColl Center for Art + Innovation is set in an urban environment and emphasizes community interaction.
Since opening its doors in 1999, McColl Center for Art + Innovation has become a nationally acclaimed contemporary art center dedicated to connecting art and artists with the community. Located in a historic neo-Gothic church in uptown Charlotte, the Center houses eight studios for resident artists and more than 5,000 square feet of gallery space. The Center's goal is to present art and artists in a way that engages and enriches the public while revealing the creative process through open studios, outreach, community projects, and educational programs.
Shaping all aspects of McColl’s exhibition, residency program, and community outreach, their Spheres of Impact create dynamic partnerships between the Center and a myriad of organizations in our community, while raising the visibility of artists to spark positive social and global change.
Spheres are: Education, Environment, Healthcare, Social Justice, International, Technology, Business Innovation, Craft, Beauty, and Architecture +Design
The Center seeks an artist who is knowledgeable about current environmental issues affecting urban ecosystems who will work in advance with Center staff and community partners to identify an existing problem and path of inquiry that will be addressed during the two-month residency period. The Center’ss Environmental program generally consists of projects that are site-based.
The four pillars of the Environmental Artist-in-Residence Program are art, science, community and education. Each year, three environmental artists-in-residence commence remediation projects in partnership with Charlotte Mecklenburg Parks & Recreation, Catawba Lands Conservancy, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, Queens University, Discovery Place and the Charlotte Nature Museum.
Example of Sphere of Influence: Maria Shell, Fall 2014, Sphere of Influence: Craft art quilter
worked with communities surrounding the Brightwalk Arts and Ecology Campus in Charlotte, North Carolina, home of McColl Center for Art + Innovation. Her workshops invited participants to incorporate their personal quilt blocks into a mural-sized quilt that tells their collective story of how rapid re-development in their community affects their lives.
Maria Shell collaborated with over 20 residents of Moore Place – Charlotte’s first permanent supportive housing residential complex for chronically homeless adults – to create a community quilt.
Large studios. Nice condos that are located just across the street.
The collaboration between Shell and the formerly homeless individuals, many who had never used a sewing machine before, was a moving journey for everyone involved. The new community quilt, HOME, was celebrated and installed at the Moore Place lobby last month – May 2015.
The Santa Fe Art Institute promotes art as a positive social force through residencies, lectures, studio workshops, exhibitions, community art actions, and educational outreach for adults and young people. SFAI is an environment where creativity, innovation, and challenging ideas thrive.
SFAI takes as its mission an exploration of the intersections of contemporary art and society. By bringing together prominent individuals and institutions in the arts, sciences, and humanities, SFAI enlivens local, national, and international discourse through residencies, lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and educational and outreach programming. Nurturing artists and providing a stimulating, creative atmosphere for their work serves society in an essential way and gives artists the support necessary to take risks and explore possibilities. For young people, the arts allow creativity and innovation to be valued along with the traditional skills for learning.
Founded in 1985, but moved to new facility in 1999. Designed by renowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta, the nearly 17,000 square-foot facility has permitted SFAI to expand its mission and programming significantly.

SFAI implements yearlong thematic programing that address pertinent questions facing diverse regional and global communities. Reminiscent of McColl’s Spheres of Influence.
Residency Theme 2015-2016 : IMMIGRATION / EMIGRATION – Not mandatory
SFAI is pleased to announce Immigration / Emigration as its next residency and programmatic theme. From September 2015 through May 2016, SFAI and its community partners will explore several questions: Who immigrates/emigrates and why? How do the journeys of migrants contribute to who we are as a collective community? What happens when diverse communities come together with local and global advocates, activists, and policy makers to explore alternative models, narratives, projects, and interventions relating to the complex terrain of immigration and emigration? How can SFAI cultivate participatory discourse between invested local stakeholders and creative practitioners that examines complexities and inequities in current and historic immigration systems in the United States?
By hosting residencies for creative practitioners, fostering partnerships with cultural and educational organizations, and integrating social entrepreneurial and education initiatives, SFAI aspires to transform Santa Fe into a hub for positive social change that reflects the greatest needs of our times.
Santa Fe is a dynamic, small city in the Southwestern United States. It is known for its three cultures: Native Americans, Spanish, and European American. The Rio Grande Pueblo tribal communities are within reach and access. The natural wilderness area of Northern New Mexico provides inspiration in a unique region of the United States.
Gretchen Sagan’s studio was the last one on left in left photo. Second image shows the view in the opposite direction from down at the entrance to her studio.
SFAI supports more than 60 residents per year. Residents are housed in well-appointed individual rooms with private baths. Those with studio-based practices will be accommodated in semi-private studios. All residents share a kitchen, lounge, computer lab, and collaborative production space. The overall physical layout of the residency space encourages daily interaction and fosters communication among residents.
Shown is Gretchen’s studio – semi private. Gretchen worked a lot at night. Shared space in middle can be utilized, as well.

SFAI will be hosting these residencies in cooperation with the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). Residents will have a semi-private studio at SFAI, and will be able to use the extensive and well equipped studios at the IAIA including ceramic, painting/drawing, printmaking, photography (digital and dark room processed black and white) and jewelry/metals studio, sculpture and foundry, and new media center. Access to the Museum of Native Contemporary Art is also available.
Beautiful, well-appointed residential campus is about a 20 minute drive from SFAI
Founded in 1996, Zygote Press is an artist workshop promoting contemporary fine art printing located in Cleveland, Ohio.
Through advocacy, exhibitions, community programs, and affordable, professional workspace, Zygote stimulates collective exchange. Artists create new work, audiences explore new ideas, and collaborations strengthen the community. Zygote is a destination for printmakers nationwide, offering facilities for intaglio, (plate) lithography, relief printing, screen printing, letterpress, and digital media. Zygote Press also initiates and facilitates projects with professional artists in an active environment, where artists, students, and the public interact.
Zygote is the only open-access print studio in Northeast Ohio and is the largest in the state of Ohio. With extensive residency programs and program-driven resources for emerging and established artists, Zygote has been important in the revitalization of the Arts Quarter district of the Superior-St. Clair neighborhood.
As the largest independent fine art print shop between Pittsburgh and Chicago, Zygote’s programs provide much needed resources for artists and educational nonprofits. The collaborative dynamic of the print shop encourages artistic growth, and classes for all skill levels grow the medium.
Previous Rasmuson Foundation Artist Residency Program fellows awarded residencies at Zygote Press include Jimmy Riordan and Michael Walsh.
This residency is designed for visual artists with an interest in printmaking. Artists who are not printmakers but want to experiment with printmaking are encouraged to apply.
Though Jimmy has trained in printmaking, he doesn’t identify himself as a printmaker. He primarily focused on letterpress during his residency. Likewise, Homer artist Michael Walsh, currently in residence at Zygote, is not a printmaker. He’s a filmmaker. He’s experimenting with printing on celluloid film.
Image shows printed strips of film drying on racks.

Jimmy Riordan (2014) included various groups in his project – here, he’s introducing Zygote staff to his project, and on the right, he’s working with ten students from the Settlement Program.
Rasmuson artists reside in a 1,500-square-foot loft apartment called Z Pass above the printmaking shop, and are part of a large and vibrant arts community working at Zygote Press. This mid-town location has direct access to dining, shopping, parking, and public transit.
Give yourself adequate time to complete the application. It is normal for applicants to prepare materials over the course of several weeks.
Make sure materials are presented in the best manner possible.
Applications submitted that are incomplete or do not follow the instructions will not be considered.
