Her father was in the army.
Most inspired by her mother.
Attended Hofstra University, majoring in Economics.
Author of four award-winning novels.
Writing is her “passion.”
Inspiration for Jumped
Professor at Vermont College of Fine Arts.
Wrote Jumped to examine each persons role
in peer violence.
Observed NYC classrooms for two years.
Audience:
Juvenile Detention Center
      8th through 12th grade




    This novel can help students see
 the consequences of fighting and how
      to make school safer for all.
Summary
Jumped is about 3 girls
Dominique, Trina, and Leticia
who attend a NYC school.



Trina steps in Dominique's personal space,
and Domnique vows to assault her.

Leticia knows Trina doesn’t know,
but she does nothing….
Students form groups based on identity.

a potential fight—but she doesn’t.

•  Her lack of action shows consequences
of not communicating with advisors.
 • Her friend, Bea, acts as her
 conscience.
Dominique
Fails to take responsibility for her
low grades in school—
She blames her teacher, coach, and
takes her rage out on Trina.
Trina
Physical abuse she endures shows the
 consequences of others not taking
 responsibility.

Students should inform an adult if
they know of imminent violence.
Teachers and Schools
• Fail to relate lessons to life.
• Fail to cultivate a peaceful school.
• Fail to create an environment
  of open communication.
• Fail to engage/ discuss future goals.

•Trina toward her teacher—
shedoes not respect authority.
•Dominique blames teacher
