What is Jump Starting in
Vehicle?
What are the things to be used
in performing jump starting
vehicle?
When do we need to conduct
a jump start the vehicle?
Jump Starting
• also called a boost, is a procedure
of starting a motor vehicle (most
commonly cars or trucks) that has
a discharged battery. A temporary
connection is made to the battery
of another vehicle, or to some
other external power source.
Conducting jump
start the vehicle
• In case of accidental discharge of the
vehicle battery (for example, by
headlights, interior lights or ignition
switch left on while the engine is not
running).
• Safe procedures for connecting and
disconnecting cables are given in the
vehicle manual.

Task 1.4
1.Based on the video clip cite five (5)
safety precautions that can be
applicable in perform jump start the
vehicle.
2.List down five (5) important things that
does not include in the video clip
presented.

in Jump Starting
a Vehicle
Things to be used in performing jump starting vehicle
1. Attach one end of
the positive jumper
cable to the disabled
battery’s positive
terminal.

2. Connect the other end
of the positive jumper
cable to the booster
battery’s positive
terminal.

3. Attach one end of the
negative jumper cable to
the booster battery’s
negative terminal.
Procedure in Jump Starting a Vehicle
4. Attach the other end of the negative
jumper cable to an engine ground on the
disabled vehicle.
NOTE: Do not connect this cable end
to the battery negative terminal. Doing
so may create a spark that will cause
the battery to explode.

8. Disconnect
the positive
jumper cable
from the
booster battery
then from the
other battery.
7.
Disconnect
the negative
jumper cable
from the
booster
battery.
6. Once the
disabled
vehicle starts,
disconnect the
ground
connected
negative
jumper cable
from its engine
block.
CAUTIONS: Do not use more
than 16 volts to jump starting a
vehicle that is equipped with an
engine control module (EICM).
The excess voltage may
damage the electronic
components.
Quiz 1.7
1. It is the procedure of which the dead battery is boosted
by other battery with enough capacity to start the
engine.
2. A cable used in conducting jump starting the vehicle.
3. An insulated materials that can be used in jump starting
the vehicle to avoid electric shock.
4. A main source of electrical energy in the vehicle.
5. Complete the Procedure 1:
“Attached one end of positive jumper cable to the
disabled battery’s ______________ terminal”
