It’s Back: The Sweetest, Jui Handle with Care: How to Take Home Your Perfect Peach As beautiful as they are to look at, handling peaches more than necessary bruises their delicate flesh. - 4. In 1890, aFrench immigrant named Peter Pieri brought onion seeds from the island of Corsica to the Walla Walla Valley. Noticing that the onions were so sweet, you could practically eat them like an apple, local farmers saved seeds from Pieri’s onions to grow their own. The early 1900s saw Walla Walla growers plant acres of onions, and word spread of the distinctive sweetness. After working for Pieri for a number of years, Italian immigrant Joe Locati bought a farm along the foothills of the Blue Mountains, starting his own onion operation in 1909. In 1995, onion growers took steps to protect their unique vegetable, getting a USDA order for the Genuine Walla Walla Sweet seal to certify theirs as special. 12 years later, it became Washington’s state vegetable. Four generations of the Locati family have been integral in creating the distinctive flavor of Walla Walla sweet onions, and their name is synonymous with great product. Locati Farms onions achieved an even greater distinction, when people noticed that their onions seemed to be sweeter than any others being grown. An independent lab tested the Colossal onions, and results showed that the onions indeed have an extremely low level of pyruvic acid — the lower the level, the sweeter the onion! We’re proud to start a new tradition of great Walla Walla Sweetest Onions at Met Market. Introducing Walla Wa The fertile Walla Walla Valley is famous for its ideal growing climate, with notable wineries for miles. But the most treasured prize in the region is the Walla Walla onion, and Metropolitan Market carries the sweetest one there is. Brought over from Corsica in 1890, these onions grow to a Colossal size, with remarkably sweet flavor. Hurry in, because the Walla Walla Sweetest Onion is only at Metropolitan Market, and only for a short time. Meet the Grower: Locati Farms When you have a ton of onions to cut, a mandolin is the right tool to reach for. Our Housewares Department carries ceramic, handheld, and large sizes of mandolins, so you can slice and shave your Walla Walla Sweetest onions quickly and easily. The PL8 Mandolin from Progressive is our Culinary Artists’ go-to gadget. The sharper your knife, the less you cry. - 8. Minimalist 2014 Cotes duRoussillon This Metropolitan Market exclusive comes from the southernmost vineyards of France: the Cotes du Roussillon, just north of Catalonian Spain. A complex, feisty blend of Grenache (50%), Syrah (35%), and Carignan (15%), it displays facets of wild herbs, expansive black fruit, earth-mineral, and sassafrass, revealing its impressive characteristics over a long, relaxed, satiny build. Montmassot 2014 Picpoul de Pinet (Coteaux du Languedoc) From the initial bracing sip through notes of lemon zest and lime leaf, subtleties of minerals and white pepper, aromas of almonds and flower petals, this complex, impeccably clean, brisk white has go-to summer wine written all over it. Domaine Francois Millet 2014 Sancerre Blanc This is a gutsy, sturdy example of Sancerre, the world’s quintessential Sauvignon Blanc. Resplendent with crisp lemon and gooseberry fruit, infusions of fresh-cut garden herbs, and vivid mineral highlights, beautifully and firmly constructed, this is all one could ask for in a great Sancerre Blanc.
