Benaiah was a valiant warrior from Kabzeel who served under King David. He killed two Moabite champions and chased a lion into a pit on a snowy day. Benaiah also killed an Egyptian warrior who was armed with a spear by taking the spear and using it against him. Due to these heroic deeds, Benaiah became as famous as David's three mightiest warriors and was honored above the other members of David's Thirty, being appointed as the captain of David's bodyguard.
