Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges:
Linguist

He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1899, but moved
to Switzerland during World War I.

Because his grandmother was English, he learned to speak
    this language before Spanish.

While in Europe, he learned to speak both German and
    French.

Personal Life

Borges was not lucky in love.

He married a friend from his youth in 1967, but that ended
  quickly.

He married a woman in her 40’s a few months before he
  died in 1986.

Most of his “adult life” was spent with his mother, who died
at the age of 99 in 1975.
Issues with Government

Borges, who moved back to Buenos Aires in 1921, opposed
(quietly) the regime of dictator Juan Peron, who ruled off and
on throughout the 40’s, 50’s, and 70’s.

He kept a low profile, but the government knew where he
stood and had him and his family under constant
surveillance.

In 1973, after only ten years at his dream job, he stepped
down as director of the National Library because of Peron’s
return.
Literary Artist

Although he mostly wrote short stories, he is considered to be
both one of Argentina’s greatest writers and one of the “most
 important writers of his generation.”

He helped create “ultraism,” a literary movement that
encouraged freedom from both form and sentimentality.

He was very serious about his works, at one point buying up
his old works in order to burn them.
