John Brown led a provisional army to Harpers Ferry, Virginia to arm slaves and incite an uprising, announcing his intentions to burn the town and kill everyone if interfered. However, the plan backfired when it drew Lt. Col. Robert E. Lee and his men, who captured Brown after breaking down the door. Brown was later tried and convicted of all his crimes, being hanged at the gallows.
