John Berryman was an influential American poet and scholar who was a key figure in confessional poetry. He suffered from depression and alcoholism throughout his life after witnessing his father's suicide at a young age. Berryman published several acclaimed poetry collections, including his landmark work The Dream Songs which portrayed the anguished character "Henry" and explored themes of psychological distress through unconventional syntax and references. Though he struggled with mental health issues, Berryman received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to poetry before dying by suicide in 1972.
