ANNUAL REPORT
2014
summer 2015
Dear Just Food Supporters,
Last year was an exciting one—for Just Food as we began to roll out our new strategic plan and for me personally as I settled into
my new role.
In late 2013, Just Food set ambitious goals to ensure the organization could continue to meet community need given the rapidly
changing landscape of food justice, food access, and community health in New York City. Our community partners, institutional
investors, sister organizations, and individual donors played a strong role in crafting this new strategic direction—whether through
formal stakeholder interviews or simply by providing us with feedback on our work and expressing the need within their own
communities.
With your input, Just Food set about redefining our work and recasting our mission statement to acknowledge our focus on
building capacity within communities.
Just Food empowers and supports community-led projects that increase access to locally grown food, especially in
underserved New York City neighborhoods.
Just Food provides training and technical assistance. We give community leaders support to start, expand, and evolve
projects to meet the needs of their neighbors. And we are committed to expanding our work to new and innovative
models for ensuring equity within our food system.
My first year with Just Food has been a humbling and deeply rewarding experience. I am indebted to Just Food’s staff, board,
and community partners for continuing to teach and guide me. The best part has been the chance to witness the amazing work
being done throughout New York City. My first few months were a crash course
in Just Food, visiting the community gardens, urban farms, food pantries,
community-run farmers’ markets, and CSAs with which we partner.
My takeaway from these trips is that Just Food isn’t just about food. Just
Food is about nurturing leadership, fostering community self-reliance,
and creating a more equitable city. We focus our efforts on supporting
community leaders as they develop their own solutions to ensuring that
all New Yorkers have access to fresh, locally-grown food.
It is my great honor to be a part of this work.
In health and harvest,

Karen Washington Honored by James Beard Foundation
Just Food Board Member Karen Washington was honored at the Fourth Annual James Beard Foundation Leadership
Awards on October 27, 2014 along with Mark Bittman, Ben Burkett, Navina Khanna, and Michael Pollan. Karen was
recognized for her work in urban agriculture and the impact her leadership has had in the Bronx and beyond.
“My work isn’t finished, and hopefully this award will open more doors. I hope
the audience will leave thinking about food justice and what it means.”
“Everyone should have the right to food that is fresh, local, and healthy,
no matter their race, income, or age. It must be inclusive,
there can’t be any barriers.”

IMPACT
In 2014 alone, Just Food helped nearly a quarter million New Yorkers to access fresh,
sustainably-grown food in their own neighborhood.
VISION
Just Food believes that a socially just, environmentally sustainable, and healthy food
system is essential. We envision a future in which empowered communities lead the
charge to improve the health of their neighborhoods and good food is universally
accessible. By training and supporting New Yorkers to start community-led projects,
we’ve been advancing this vision since 1995.
MISSION
Just Food’s mission is to empower
and support community leaders
in their efforts to advocate for
and increase access to healthy,
locally-grown food, especially
in underserved New York City
neighborhoods.
Just Food provides training and
technical assistance to community
members to help them launch
projects like farmers’ markets and
community supported agriculture
groups (CSAs), educate their
neighbors in fundamental culinary
and urban agriculture skills, and
advocate to make their corner of
New York City a healthier place
to live and eat.

Just Food Conference 2014
On April 5 and 6, 2014, more than 700 advocates,
educators, and community leaders attended Just Food’s
annual conference, which was held in partnership with
the Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy.
The conference featured participatory workshops,
plenary sessions, all-day intensives, and tours.
On the main conference day, five food movement leaders
shared their stories, ideas, and perspectives on a food-
related topic during Food Talks. Speakers included
Rafael Aponte from Rocky Acres Community Farm;
Dennis Derryck from Corbin Hill Farm; Tony Hillery from
Harlem Grown; Rachelle Faroul from Just Food; and
Kathy Lawrence, founding Executive Director of Just Food
and current Director of Strategic Development with
School Food FOCUS.
CSA Just Food pioneered the CSA movement in New York
City.  CSA gives city residents direct access to high quality, fresh
produce grown locally by purchasing a “share” of vegetables
from a regional farmer. CSA members pay for an entire season
of produce upfront. This early bulk payment enables farmers to
plan for the season, purchase new seed, make equipment repairs,
and pay for other expenses early in the year.
In 1995, the city had just one CSA. Today Just Food’s network of
100-plus CSAs provides fresh fruits and vegetables to more than
45,000 New Yorkers of all income levels, while ensuring that
local farms thrive.
Just Food works to make CSA accessible through Just Share, an
initiative that lowers the price of CSA membership by matching
payments made with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP)  benefits (a.k.a. food stamps). In 2014, Just Food subsidized
CSA shares for 200 low-income New Yorkers.
PANTRIES Just Food’s Farm-to-Food Pantry Program connects
local farms with emergency food providers in order to bring fresh, local
produce to food pantries and soup kitchens throughout the city. The
program is funded by the New York State Department of Health’s Hunger
Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) and is managed in
partnership with the United Way of New York City. Each season, Just Food
organizes farm trips that allow pantry clients and staff to connect with
their farmer, learn about where their vegetables come from, and enjoy
a day in the countryside.
In 2014, Just Food partnered with eight regional farmers and 49
emergency food programs in all five boroughs to deliver over 280,000
pounds of fresh vegetables to the city’s most vulnerable residents.
MARKETS Just Food’s network of 27 community-led farmers’
markets serve as community hubs and in 2014 provided 108,000 New
Yorkers with access to fresh food grown by urban and regional farmers.
Over 70% of purchases at these markets are made using public
nutrition benefits.
accessJust Food works hand-in-hand with
community leaders to bring fresh, local
food to their neighborhoods by providing
training and resources to help them launch
community projects like farmers’ markets
and community supported agriculture
(CSA) groups.
Just Food’s Farmers’ Market Network provides training and resources for community members looking for ways to make fresh, local,
and affordable food available in their neighborhood. Just Food provides access to market insurance and trains markets to accept
government nutrition benefits, making the markets accessible to low-income community members.
While the South Bronx Farmers’ Market had tremendous community support from the beginning, Lily believes that Just Food’s
resources were essential in successfully launching the market. “The training was paramount, and it was helpful that all five of us were
able to attend. Just Food has helped connect us to different farmers and gardeners to sell their produce at our market,” she says.
“We also established relationships with other new markets at the training, so we can discuss tips and information with each other.”
“I’m interested in connecting farming with business and marketing. I wanted to
create a market that was stable and viable for farmers while helping my community.”
In 2014, the South Bronx Farmers’ Market was one of five new markets to launch as part of Just Food’s Farmers’ Market Network.
Lily Kesselman, Bronx resident and market co-founder, saw a need for a weekend market in her neighborhood. “We have several
weekday markets, but most of us work in Manhattan during the week and have no time to get to them. I was looking for an alternative
to going into the city to shop for fresh food on the weekends,” she says.
The South Bronx Farmers’ Market is in a key location with heavy foot traffic. On 138th Street in Mott Haven, it operates directly across
from a bustling subway station and on the same street as a community farm. The Bronx is also ideally situated for farmers traveling
from upstate New York.
A South Bronx Tale:
Mott Haven Gains a New Farmers’ Market
URBAN AG
Just Food empowers New Yorkers to grow
food for themselves and their communities.
We train community gardeners and urban
farmers to teach sustainable growing
practices. In 2014 these peer educators
led 48 workshops for nearly 1,000 of
their neighbors. Workshops included
garden planning and season extension,
healthy soils, composting, integrated
pest management, and traditional food
preservation techniques.
COOKING
Just Food empowers New Yorkers to
cook with fresh, local produce. We
train community members to teach
simple techniques for creating healthy
and delicious meals. Once trained, our
Community Chefs lead engaging and
interactive cooking demonstrations that
educate and inspire New Yorkers to get
into the kitchen.
In 2014, our Community Chefs led 177
cooking demonstrations for more than
6,000 of their neighbors at farmers’
markets, food pantries, and community
events.
educationA learner-centered approach to education is the foundation of Just Food’s work
within New York City communities. Just Food employs popular education methods
in its programming, from workshops and cooking demonstrations to one-on-one
technical assistance. Through our Training of Trainers series, community educators
explore learner-centered teaching and hands-on, participatory learning techniques;
gain an understanding of various styles of learning; and have the opportunity to
practice planning, designing, and leading effective workshops.
Community educators trained by Just Food use these skills to share their agricultural,
culinary, and advocacy expertise with their neighbors and to build the strength of
their community-led food projects.
Yadira Garcia, one of Just Food’s Community Chefs, has made it her
mission to inspire all New Yorkers to live a happy, healthy lifestyle.
“The power of whole foods gave me my life back
and I want to pay it forward by teaching others,”
she says. “I grew up in an area of the Bronx with
very little access to organic and fresh, seasonal
foods. I didn’t even know what a farmers’ market
was. Today, my life is so much better because of
fresh, local food.”
Each spring, Just Food invites interested community members to apply
to our annual Community Chef training program.  Yadira was part of the
2014 class of Community Chefs, who learned how to facilitate workshops
about local, seasonal eating and cooking; basic nutrition; fruit and
vegetable identification; recipe selection and creation; knife skills;
and food storage and preparation.
After Yadira completed Just Food’s training, she began facilitating
interactive food education workshops in the Bronx.  Throughout the
harvest season, Community Chefs conduct cooking demonstrations at
farmers’ markets and food pantries in order to teach others how to select
fresh, local produce and prepare healthy, delicious, and affordable meals.
“I believe changing our health and increasing
food access in our neighborhoods starts with
a connection. Just Food put me in touch with
what the real issues in the communities are,”
she says. “I feel honored and inspired by my
experience.”
Turn the Beet Around:
Meet Community Chef Yadira Garcia
“	I personally learned the power and strength of
grassroots organizing from doing it myself, by
constantly engaging and involving myself in
issues that were important to me. It’s essential
for people to gain tools for effective strategy
in whatever they are doing,” says Qiana Mickie,
a longtime community advocate and Just Food
CSA Program Manager.
ADVOCACY Just Food advocates for a more just and sustainable food system. We lead campaigns, participate in coalitions,
work with elected officials and government agencies, and train New Yorkers to advocate on behalf of their communities. Our annual
conference draws more than 700 food and social justice advocates.
FEE-FOR-SERVICE Just Food offers training and technical assistance on a fee-for-service basis to a broad range of organizations seeking to
increase access to healthy food and to build the leadership and educational capacity of community members. In 2014, Just Food provided trainings, urban
agriculture workshops, and cooking demonstrations for organizations including the Fortune Society, New York Restoration Project, the New York City Parks
Department GreenThumb Program, and the Brownsville MultiService Family Health Center.
TRAINING OF TRAINERS Through the Training of Trainers Workshop Series, community educators gain facilitation and leadership skills.  This dynamic
course explores popular education methods, emphasizing the concepts of learner-centered and hands-on, participatory learning. Participants explore
various styles of learning, and practice planning, designing, and leading an effective workshop.
ADVOCACY Just Food’s Advocacy Training builds the capacity of community members  to lead advocacy and grassroots campaigns on farm and food
issues that impact their community. Participants explore social justice and equity issues in the food system, government and food policy, advocacy
basics, grassroots campaign strategies, community outreach and organizing, and techniques to facilitate participatory workshops and campaigns.
URBAN AGRICULTURE Just Food’s  community educators lead workshops on a wide range of urban agriculture topics, including garden planning
and season extension, healthy soils, composting, integrated pest management, and traditional food preservation techniques.
FARMERS’ MARKET TRAINING PROGRAM Just Food provides training for community and school groups to help them plan, develop, and launch
community-run farmers’ markets.
FOOD EDUCATION Just Food provides hands-on trainings to teach community members how to conduct cooking demonstrations that engage
New Yorkers in a dialogue about food; provide simple, healthy recipes; and encourage families to incorporate more fresh, healthy food into their diets.

Let Us Eat Local
Just Food’s seventh annual tasting
benefit, Let Us Eat Local, brought 50 of New York
City’s greatest chefs, breweries, wineries, and food
artisans together to celebrate Just Food’s mission and
highlight the region’s bounty of local, seasonal food.
More than 650 people attended Let Us Eat Local on
September 17th at the Altman Building in Chelsea.
Participating restaurants included Gramercy Tavern,
Blue Hill, ABC Cocina, Riverpark, Telepan, and
many others leading the farm-to-table movement
in New York City.
CSA Smackdown
Just Food hosted the third annual
CSA Smackdown, a citywide
cooking competition for members
of Just Food Network CSAs, at Haven’s Kitchen on October 20th.
After hosting competitions to identify their most creative cooks, teams
from Mid Island CSA, Sunset Park CSA, and Grand Street CSA faced
off in a culinary battle using local ingredients from Stoneledge Farm
and Katchkie Farm. Their dishes were judged by an all-star panel of
judges including MSNBC commentator, Top Chef judge, and Food
Policy Action Board Member Tom Colicchio; Food52’s Amanda
Hesser; and David Mawhinney, Executive Chef of Haven’s Kitchen.
Proceeds from the event supported Just Food’s CSA subsidy
initiative, Just Share.

summer 2015 Dear JustFood Supporters, Last year was an exciting one—for Just Food as we began to roll out our new strategic plan and for me personally as I settled into my new role. In late 2013, Just Food set ambitious goals to ensure the organization could continue to meet community need given the rapidly changing landscape of food justice, food access, and community health in New York City. Our community partners, institutional investors, sister organizations, and individual donors played a strong role in crafting this new strategic direction—whether through formal stakeholder interviews or simply by providing us with feedback on our work and expressing the need within their own communities. With your input, Just Food set about redefining our work and recasting our mission statement to acknowledge our focus on building capacity within communities. Just Food empowers and supports community-led projects that increase access to locally grown food, especially in underserved New York City neighborhoods. Just Food provides training and technical assistance. We give community leaders support to start, expand, and evolve projects to meet the needs of their neighbors. And we are committed to expanding our work to new and innovative models for ensuring equity within our food system. My first year with Just Food has been a humbling and deeply rewarding experience. I am indebted to Just Food’s staff, board, and community partners for continuing to teach and guide me. The best part has been the chance to witness the amazing work being done throughout New York City. My first few months were a crash course in Just Food, visiting the community gardens, urban farms, food pantries, community-run farmers’ markets, and CSAs with which we partner. My takeaway from these trips is that Just Food isn’t just about food. Just Food is about nurturing leadership, fostering community self-reliance, and creating a more equitable city. We focus our efforts on supporting community leaders as they develop their own solutions to ensuring that all New Yorkers have access to fresh, locally-grown food. It is my great honor to be a part of this work. In health and harvest, Jasmine Nielsen Executive Director

IMPACT In 2014 alone,Just Food helped nearly a quarter million New Yorkers to access fresh, sustainably-grown food in their own neighborhood. VISION Just Food believes that a socially just, environmentally sustainable, and healthy food system is essential. We envision a future in which empowered communities lead the charge to improve the health of their neighborhoods and good food is universally accessible. By training and supporting New Yorkers to start community-led projects, we’ve been advancing this vision since 1995. MISSION Just Food’s mission is to empower and support community leaders in their efforts to advocate for and increase access to healthy, locally-grown food, especially in underserved New York City neighborhoods. Just Food provides training and technical assistance to community members to help them launch projects like farmers’ markets and community supported agriculture groups (CSAs), educate their neighbors in fundamental culinary and urban agriculture skills, and advocate to make their corner of New York City a healthier place to live and eat. 25,000 1995-2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 50,000 75,000 100,000 125,000 150,000 175,000 200,000 225,000 250,000 Community Supported Agriculture Farmers' Markets Farm-to-Pantry Urban Ag & Cooking Education

CSA Just Foodpioneered the CSA movement in New York City.  CSA gives city residents direct access to high quality, fresh produce grown locally by purchasing a “share” of vegetables from a regional farmer. CSA members pay for an entire season of produce upfront. This early bulk payment enables farmers to plan for the season, purchase new seed, make equipment repairs, and pay for other expenses early in the year. In 1995, the city had just one CSA. Today Just Food’s network of 100-plus CSAs provides fresh fruits and vegetables to more than 45,000 New Yorkers of all income levels, while ensuring that local farms thrive. Just Food works to make CSA accessible through Just Share, an initiative that lowers the price of CSA membership by matching payments made with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)  benefits (a.k.a. food stamps). In 2014, Just Food subsidized CSA shares for 200 low-income New Yorkers. PANTRIES Just Food’s Farm-to-Food Pantry Program connects local farms with emergency food providers in order to bring fresh, local produce to food pantries and soup kitchens throughout the city. The program is funded by the New York State Department of Health’s Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) and is managed in partnership with the United Way of New York City. Each season, Just Food organizes farm trips that allow pantry clients and staff to connect with their farmer, learn about where their vegetables come from, and enjoy a day in the countryside. In 2014, Just Food partnered with eight regional farmers and 49 emergency food programs in all five boroughs to deliver over 280,000 pounds of fresh vegetables to the city’s most vulnerable residents. MARKETS Just Food’s network of 27 community-led farmers’ markets serve as community hubs and in 2014 provided 108,000 New Yorkers with access to fresh food grown by urban and regional farmers. Over 70% of purchases at these markets are made using public nutrition benefits. accessJust Food works hand-in-hand with community leaders to bring fresh, local food to their neighborhoods by providing training and resources to help them launch community projects like farmers’ markets and community supported agriculture (CSA) groups.

Just Food’s Farmers’Market Network provides training and resources for community members looking for ways to make fresh, local, and affordable food available in their neighborhood. Just Food provides access to market insurance and trains markets to accept government nutrition benefits, making the markets accessible to low-income community members. While the South Bronx Farmers’ Market had tremendous community support from the beginning, Lily believes that Just Food’s resources were essential in successfully launching the market. “The training was paramount, and it was helpful that all five of us were able to attend. Just Food has helped connect us to different farmers and gardeners to sell their produce at our market,” she says. “We also established relationships with other new markets at the training, so we can discuss tips and information with each other.” “I’m interested in connecting farming with business and marketing. I wanted to create a market that was stable and viable for farmers while helping my community.” In 2014, the South Bronx Farmers’ Market was one of five new markets to launch as part of Just Food’s Farmers’ Market Network. Lily Kesselman, Bronx resident and market co-founder, saw a need for a weekend market in her neighborhood. “We have several weekday markets, but most of us work in Manhattan during the week and have no time to get to them. I was looking for an alternative to going into the city to shop for fresh food on the weekends,” she says. The South Bronx Farmers’ Market is in a key location with heavy foot traffic. On 138th Street in Mott Haven, it operates directly across from a bustling subway station and on the same street as a community farm. The Bronx is also ideally situated for farmers traveling from upstate New York. A South Bronx Tale: Mott Haven Gains a New Farmers’ Market

URBAN AG Just Foodempowers New Yorkers to grow food for themselves and their communities. We train community gardeners and urban farmers to teach sustainable growing practices. In 2014 these peer educators led 48 workshops for nearly 1,000 of their neighbors. Workshops included garden planning and season extension, healthy soils, composting, integrated pest management, and traditional food preservation techniques. COOKING Just Food empowers New Yorkers to cook with fresh, local produce. We train community members to teach simple techniques for creating healthy and delicious meals. Once trained, our Community Chefs lead engaging and interactive cooking demonstrations that educate and inspire New Yorkers to get into the kitchen. In 2014, our Community Chefs led 177 cooking demonstrations for more than 6,000 of their neighbors at farmers’ markets, food pantries, and community events. educationA learner-centered approach to education is the foundation of Just Food’s work within New York City communities. Just Food employs popular education methods in its programming, from workshops and cooking demonstrations to one-on-one technical assistance. Through our Training of Trainers series, community educators explore learner-centered teaching and hands-on, participatory learning techniques; gain an understanding of various styles of learning; and have the opportunity to practice planning, designing, and leading effective workshops. Community educators trained by Just Food use these skills to share their agricultural, culinary, and advocacy expertise with their neighbors and to build the strength of their community-led food projects.

Yadira Garcia, oneof Just Food’s Community Chefs, has made it her mission to inspire all New Yorkers to live a happy, healthy lifestyle. “The power of whole foods gave me my life back and I want to pay it forward by teaching others,” she says. “I grew up in an area of the Bronx with very little access to organic and fresh, seasonal foods. I didn’t even know what a farmers’ market was. Today, my life is so much better because of fresh, local food.” Each spring, Just Food invites interested community members to apply to our annual Community Chef training program.  Yadira was part of the 2014 class of Community Chefs, who learned how to facilitate workshops about local, seasonal eating and cooking; basic nutrition; fruit and vegetable identification; recipe selection and creation; knife skills; and food storage and preparation. After Yadira completed Just Food’s training, she began facilitating interactive food education workshops in the Bronx.  Throughout the harvest season, Community Chefs conduct cooking demonstrations at farmers’ markets and food pantries in order to teach others how to select fresh, local produce and prepare healthy, delicious, and affordable meals. “I believe changing our health and increasing food access in our neighborhoods starts with a connection. Just Food put me in touch with what the real issues in the communities are,” she says. “I feel honored and inspired by my experience.” Turn the Beet Around: Meet Community Chef Yadira Garcia

“ I personally learnedthe power and strength of grassroots organizing from doing it myself, by constantly engaging and involving myself in issues that were important to me. It’s essential for people to gain tools for effective strategy in whatever they are doing,” says Qiana Mickie, a longtime community advocate and Just Food CSA Program Manager. ADVOCACY Just Food advocates for a more just and sustainable food system. We lead campaigns, participate in coalitions, work with elected officials and government agencies, and train New Yorkers to advocate on behalf of their communities. Our annual conference draws more than 700 food and social justice advocates. FEE-FOR-SERVICE Just Food offers training and technical assistance on a fee-for-service basis to a broad range of organizations seeking to increase access to healthy food and to build the leadership and educational capacity of community members. In 2014, Just Food provided trainings, urban agriculture workshops, and cooking demonstrations for organizations including the Fortune Society, New York Restoration Project, the New York City Parks Department GreenThumb Program, and the Brownsville MultiService Family Health Center. TRAINING OF TRAINERS Through the Training of Trainers Workshop Series, community educators gain facilitation and leadership skills.  This dynamic course explores popular education methods, emphasizing the concepts of learner-centered and hands-on, participatory learning. Participants explore various styles of learning, and practice planning, designing, and leading an effective workshop. ADVOCACY Just Food’s Advocacy Training builds the capacity of community members  to lead advocacy and grassroots campaigns on farm and food issues that impact their community. Participants explore social justice and equity issues in the food system, government and food policy, advocacy basics, grassroots campaign strategies, community outreach and organizing, and techniques to facilitate participatory workshops and campaigns. URBAN AGRICULTURE Just Food’s  community educators lead workshops on a wide range of urban agriculture topics, including garden planning and season extension, healthy soils, composting, integrated pest management, and traditional food preservation techniques. FARMERS’ MARKET TRAINING PROGRAM Just Food provides training for community and school groups to help them plan, develop, and launch community-run farmers’ markets. FOOD EDUCATION Just Food provides hands-on trainings to teach community members how to conduct cooking demonstrations that engage New Yorkers in a dialogue about food; provide simple, healthy recipes; and encourage families to incorporate more fresh, healthy food into their diets.
