And unto the angel of the church - See the notes on Revelation1:20.
These things saith the Son of God - This is the first time, in these epistles, that
the name of the speakeris referred to. In eachother instance there is merely
some attribute of the Saviour mentioned. Perhaps the severity of the rebuke
contemplated here made it proper that there should be a more impressive
reference to the authority of the speaker;and hence he is introduced as the
“Sonof God.” It is not a reference to him as the “Sonof man “the common
appellation which he gave to himself when on earth - for that might have
suggestedhis humanity only, and would not have conveyedthe same
impression in regard to his authority; but it is to himself as sustaining the
rank, and having the authority, of the Sonof God - one who, therefore, has a
right to speak, and a right to demand that what he says shall be heard.
Who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire - Compare the notes on Revelation
1:14. Before the glance ofhis eye all is light, and nothing can be concealed
from his view. Nothing would be better suited to inspire awe then, as nothing
should be now, than such a reference to the Sonof God as being able to
penetrate the secretrecesses ofthe heart.
And his feet are like fine brass - See the notes on Revelation1:15. Perhaps
indicative of majesty and glory as he walkedin the midst of the churches.

THYATIRA
Some twenty miles eastof Pergamum on the road to Sardis was Thyatira, a
name which means "castle ofThya,"[77]and which is probably retained in
the modern Ak-Hissar (white castle), a Turkish town on a fertile plain, being
the centerof the cottonindustry, and a relatively important town of 30,156
(1955).[78]In New Testamenttimes, the dye industry was important, Lydia
having been from Thyatira (Acts 16:14). It was also the home of many
influential trade guilds, having their own deities, temples, and guild halls,
where feasts, tending to obscenity, and all kinds of immoralities were
practices. Politically, Thyatira was a kind of buffer state betweenPergamum
on the westand Seleucus (Syria)on the east, evidently changing hands a
number of times betweenthe two states in pre-Christian history.[79]"Apollo
the sun god, was the principal deity,"[80] probably leading to the reference to
the Sonof Godand the morning star in this message, as a contrast.

John Gill's Exposition of the Whole Bible
And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write,.... Of the city of Thyatira;
see Gill on Revelation1:11; a church was formed here very likely by the
Apostle Paul; Lydia was a native of this place, who, and her household were
convertedand baptized by him at Philippi, Acts 16:14; though EpiphaniusF21
seems to grant, what some heretics objectedto the authority of this book, that
there was no church at Thyatira when this letter was written; however, it is
certain, there was one in the "second" century, as the same writer observes,
since, as he relates, it was overrun with the Cataphrygian heresy;and in the
"fourth" century there was a bishop from Thyatira in the councilof Nice;and
even in the "eighth" century there was one Esaias a presbyter, who supplied
the place of the bishop of Thyatira in another councilat NiceF23:the Turks
have now eight mosques in it, but there is not one Christian church or place of
worship to be found in itF24. Who was the angel, or pastorof this church at
the writing of this epistle, is not certain; however, it is designedfor all the
ministers and churches in the interval this church represents;and this period
takes in the darkestand most superstitious times of Popery, until the
Reformation. Thyatira is the same as Thygatira, which signifies a "daughter";
and it had its name, as Stephanus Byzantius saysF25,from hence: Seleucus,
the sonof Nicanor, being at warwith Lysimachus, and hearing that he had a
daughter born, calledthis city Thygatira, which was before calledPelopia,
and Semiramis; which is a very fit name for this church, and expresses the
effeminacy of it, when the virgin Mary, whom the Romanists callthe daughter
of God, was more worshipped than her son; and was not only made a partner
with him in the business of salvation, but even set above him; when there were
such swarms of monks and friars, and religious orders of severalsorts, as
Franciscansand Dominicans, who claimedher as their patroness;when such
numbers of them cladthemselves in cowls and long garments, that they looked
more like women in hoods and petticoats, than really men; hence also the
corrupt part of this church is signified by the womanJezebel, the daughter of
Ethbaal the Zidonian; and it should not be forgotthat there was once a she
pope, a woman that sat in the papal chair, a whore in a literal sense;
wherefore antichrist, or the popes of Rome, are filly called the great whore,
the mother of harlots. Mr. Daubuz observes, that the first Christian of
Thyatira was a woman, and that the false prophets which first enticed the
Christians to apostasyin this church were women, as Maximilia, Quintilia,
and Priscilla;to which I would add, that according to Epiphanius, that among
those heretics, and which swallowedup this church, their bishops were
women, and so were their presbyters, or elders; and Dr. SmithF26 is of
opinion, that the inhabitants of this place, when Heathen, were worshippers of
the goddess Diana;so that, upon all accounts, the church here was a fit
symbol of the effeminate Church of Rome,
These things saith the Son of God; he who is truly, properly, naturally, and
essentiallythe Son of God: this characterChrist makes use of to asserthis
proper deity, as being of the same nature, and having the same perfections
with his Father, as well as to command the greaterregard to what he ordered
to be written to the churches; and chiefly in opposition to the effeminate state
of this church; it was time for him to take to him his highestname, as
expressive of his highest nature, and to asserthimself the Son of God, when
Mary, his mother according to the flesh, and who was but a mere creature,
was calledthe daughter of God, and setupon a level with him, and even
preferred unto him:
who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire; quick and sharp, and penetrating
through the darkness ofthis state;seeing into, discovering, and exposing the
horrid actions and wickednessesofmen done in the dark; expressing fury,
wrath, and vengeance againstthe Romish antichrist and his followers;and
may also designthe light of Gospeldoctrine, which broke out in those times at
certain seasons,to the dispelling of Popishdarkness in some measure;see Gill
on Revelation1:14,
and his feet are like fine brass;in the description of Christ in Revelation1:14;
it is added, as if they burned in a furnace; see Gill on Revelation1:14; and
may denote the strength, stability, and support Christ gave his people while
suffering for his sake, whenin the furnace and burning for him, which kind of
death was much used in those times: hence Dr. More, to whom I am much
obliged for many hints in this expositionof the epistles to the churches, thinks
that Thyatira is an allusion to θυητρια, whichsignify "altars" for the burning
of sweetodours;and so may be expressive ofthe burning of the saints, those
sweetodours, as they are to Godand Christ, with fire and faggot;which was
now practised, as in the other period killing with the swordwas chiefly used;
in the midst of which Christ was present, supporting his people,
Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible
Thyatira — in Lydia, south of Pergamos. Lydia, the purple-seller of this city,
having been convertedat Philippi, a Macedoniancity (with which Thyatira, as
being a Macedoniancolony, had naturally much intercourse), was probably
the instrument of first carrying the Gospelto her native town. John follows
the geographicalorderhere, for Thyatira lay a little to the left of the road
from Pergamos to Sardis [Strabo, 13:4].
Son of God … eyes like … fire … feet … like fine brass — or “glowing brass”
(see on Revelation1:14, Revelation1:15, whence this description is resumed).
Again His attributes accordwith His address. The title “Sonof God,” is from
Psalm2:7, Psalm2:9, which is referred to in Revelation2:27. The attribute,
“eyes like a flame,” etc., answers to Revelation2:23, “I am He which
searcheththe reins and hearts.” The attribute, “feetlike … brass,” answers to
Revelation2:27, “as the vessels ofa potter shall they be broken to shivers,” He
treading them to pieces with His strong feet.

In Thyatira (εν Τυατειροις — en Thuateirois). Some forty miles south-eastof
Pergamum, a Lydian city on the edge of Mysia, under Rome since b.c. 190, a
centre of trade, especiallyforthe royal purple, home of Lydia of Philippi (Acts
16:14.), shownby inscriptions to be full of trade guilds, Apollo the chief deity
with no emperor-worship, centre of activity by the Nicolaitans with their
idolatry and licentiousness under a “prophetess” who defied the church there.
Ramsaycalls it “WeaknessMade Strong” (op. cit., p. 316).
The Son of God (ο υιος του τεου — ho huios tou theou). Here Jesus is
representedas calling himself by this title as in John 11:4 and as he affirms on
oath in Matthew 26:63. “The Word of God” occurs in Revelation 19:13.
His eyes like a flame of fire (τους οπταλμους αυτουως πλογα πυρος — tous
ophthalmous autou hōs phloga puros). As in Revelation1:14.
His feetlike burnished brass (οι ποδες αυτου ομοιοιχαλκολιβανωι — hoi
podes autou homoioi chalkolibanōi). As in Revelation1:15.

Thyatira
Situated on the confines of Mysia and Ionia. According to Pliny it was known
in earlier times as Pelopia and Euhippia. Its prosperity receiveda new
impulse under the Roman Emperor Vespasian. The city containeda number
of corporate guilds, as potters, tanners, weavers, robe-makers, anddyers. It
was from Thyatira that Lydia the purple-seller of Philippi came, Paul's first
European convert. The numerous streams of the adjacentcountry were full of
leeches. The principal deity of the city was Apollo, worshipped as the Sun-God
under the surname Tyrimnas. A shrine outside the walls was dedicated to
Sambatha, a sibyl. The place was never of paramount political importance.

THE CHURCH IN THYATIRA
‘And unto the angelof the Church in Thyatira write.’
Revelation2:18
Of the many points in this epistle which we might make the subject-matter of
thought, let us take two on which to dwell.
I. There is the deep guilt of the Thyatiran prophetess.—Herwickedness was
very terrible, and our horror of it is increasedby the appalling factthat it was
practisedunder the plea of religious liberty. Can we, however, claim that
modern societyis wholly free from a similar tendency? The question brings us
to the gates ofwhat is indeed a ‘city of dreadful night,’ into which we need not
make our way. But this much some of us may well ask ourselves as we think of
the attitude of a certainsectionof the community towards sin of a particular
class. Is there no danger of what is really grosslyevil and vicious being let off
with easyor even honourable names? It is so easyto plead æsthetic
considerations forwhat is in truth little or no better than immorality. It is so
plausible to give the sacredtitle of love to relations which are wholly
dishonourable. High-sounding excuses forbreaches ofthe marriage-vow rise
so quickly to the lips. Whatever the claims of virtue and innocence which have
been desertedand sinned against, can we really considerthat guilt of that
kind has any right to subsequent consecrationby the customary service in
church? Do let us be on our guard againstthinking lust anything but lust, or
adultery anything but adultery. Do let us avoid the euphemisms which are
sometimes applied to them. Do let us remember the uncompromising verdict
of Scripture on these sins.
II. There is the reference to the continuous spiritual development of those
members of the Church who ‘had not this’ anti-Christian ‘teaching.’—Such
development there is in the case ofsome—many—ofus. We know well
enough—we are thankful to know—as we watchnot a few of the young lives
about us, that they are ‘growing in the grace and knowledge ofour Lord and
Saviour, Jesus Christ.’We know that faults and frailties are being conquered,
it may be slowly, it may be rapidly—but at any rate surely. We see their
minds and consciences opening to a fuller realisationof the meaning of the
gospel. We are sure that their hearts are being lifted up to the Lord on high.
We are confident that their thoughts are being setwith ever-increasing
earnestnessand sincerity on the things that are above. There are lives which
are characterisedthroughout by religious and moral advance. It is true of
them also that their ‘last works are more than the first.’ There are those who
become less and less unworthy servants. They do the work entrusted to them;
and in response Godsends them further, more important, more arduous
tasks—tasks whichmake greaterdemands upon their powers, their self-
devotion, their faith, their resolve;so that their ministry, their usefulness,
their ‘works’increase yearby year.
III. ‘He that overcometh, and he that keepethMy works unto the end.’—It is
the old summons to effort and fidelity. It is accompaniedby the old promise of
endless rewardto those who are victorious in the supreme contest. The
Kingdom of Christ will at length be establishedin universal and
unquestionable supremacy. Yes, it is coming. Dayby day it is approaching
nearer. It will in the end be manifested to quick and dead. We may be worthy
or unworthy of it. Woe indeed to those who are not written in the Lamb’s
Book ofLife. For us also is the warning, ‘All the Churches shall know that I
am He Which searcheththe reins and hearts:and I will give unto eachone of
you according to your works.’For us also is the splendid promise, ‘And he
that overcometh, and he that keepethMy works unto the end, to him will I
give authority over the nations … and I will give him the morning star.’

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible
Revelation2:18. Church in Thyatira— Thyatira was situatedat a distance of
about 48 miles to the south-eastofPergamos. See Acts 16:14. At present the
city is calledby the Turks Akhisar, or "The white castle," fromthe great
quantities of white marble there. Only one ancient edifice is left standing; the
rest, even the churches, are so destroyed, that no vestiges ofthem are to be
found. The principal inhabitants are Turks, who have here eight mosques,
while not so much as one Christian church is still remaining. So terribly have
the divine judgments been poured upon this church for its abominations!
Expository Notes with PracticalObservations onthe New Testament
The next epistle is directed by Christ, and written by St. John, to the church
of Thyatira; in which epistle
observe, 1. The name given to Christ, he is styled the Son of God; that is, by
eternal generation, being the only-begottenof the Father, as well as begotten
of the Fatheronly; and partaker of the Father's essence, as wellas of his
likeness:he is here calledthe Son of God, as being a distinct person from the
Father; yet is he the first and the last, which denotes his eternity; and who is,
and who was, and is to come, the Almighty, which are essentialattributes of
the Godhead.
Observe, 2. The description here given of Christ, His eyes like flaming fire,
and his feet like burning brass:denoting thereby his piercing and discerning
sight to see and observe his enemies, his fiery indignation, and fierce wrath,
ready to take hold of them, and his irresistible power and strength to
vanquish and tread them under his feet.
Observe, 3. The greatand specialcommendation which Christ gives to this
church: greatly she is commended for her charity to Christians in distress; for
her service in ministering to them, and in comforting of them; for her faith
and constantadherence to the professionof Christianity; and for her patience
under persecutions for the gospel's sake;but her specialand peculiar
commendation was this, that her lastworks were more than her first; that is,
her lastworks were better, did exceedand excelthe first. Ephesus was best at
first, and worst at last; but Thyatira's last works were best. It is a blessed
thing when Christians grow in goodness, increase in faith and holiness, when
their last days are their best days; their last works, and their last fruit, their
best, their fairestfruit.
Observe, 4. The reprehension follows the commendation; as goodas Thyatira
was, she needed to be better. She was remiss and negligentin her duty of
reproving, censuring, excommunicating vile seducers, the Gnostics, and
Nicolaitans, the disciples of Simon Magus, and his lewd Helena, as some think;
compared to Jezebel, becauseshe enticedAhab to worship Baal, as this
woman, (whosoevershe was,)calling herself a prophetess, and teaching the
lawfulness of fornication, and eating things offered to idols.
Some observe, That there was scarce anyheresybroached, but it had some
woman or other for the propagatorand promoter of it, who took upon them
the name of prophetesses.Simon Magus had his Helena; Montanus had his
Priscilla and Maximilla; Carpocrateshis Marcellina. Concerning this person
it is affirmed, that God gave her space to repent, but she repented not.
Learn thence, That greatis the sin, folly, and danger, of deferring and putting
off the duty of repentance, when God gives time and space sufficientto
perform it.
1. Greatis the sin, because it is a mocking of God's patience, and
undervaluing of his service, a contempt of his authority, a presuming on his
goodness,a defiance of his displeasure.
2. Greatis the folly, as wellas the sin of it, because we put it off to the most
improper and unfitting season, andbecause we hereby make the work more
hard and difficult, in what seasonsoeverwe setabout it; and the longerwe
delay our repentance, the more work shall we make for repentance.
3. As greatis the danger as either the sin or folly, because it puts a person
upon a mighty hazard; he runs a desperate venture, not knowing whether he
shall live an hour longer; and because we forfeitby our delays that special
grace, without the assistancewhereofwe cannever repent.
Observe, 5. How severelyGod threatens Jezebelhere, and in her all sinners, to
whom he gives space for repentance, but it is not improved for that end: I will
casther into a bed of tribulation and torment, instead of her bed of lust and
uncleanness, unless she repent. Behold here how greatand immeasurable the
patience of God is towards the greatest, the vilest, and the worstsinner; they
have space for repentance, they have invitations to repent, they have
judgments threatenedto prevent their final impenitence: but if they prove
incorrigible and unreclaimable, nothing is to be expectedbut approaching
ruin: I will kill her children with death; that is, such as are seducedby her
suffer with her, if judgments threatened be not by repentance prevented.
Observe lastly, The end and design of Christ in bringing upon vile sinners
these exemplary punishments, namely, to declare his omniciency, power, and
justice: All the churches shall know that I am he that searcheththe reins and
hearts: that is, all the churches in and about Thyatira, says Christ, shall know
that I not only observe outward acts, but take notice of the secretcounsels,
motions, and designs, of men's hearts, and will judge every man according to
his works:a full and cleartext to prove the divinity of Christ: he that
searchethmen's hearts, and renders to all men according to their works, is
God; but Christ doth both, and therefore is essentiallyand truly God.
Heinrich Meyer's Critical and ExegeticalCommentaryon the New Testament
Revelation2:18. ὁ ὑιὸς τοῦ θεοῦ. The Lord, who in Revelation1:13 appears
like a sonof man, is, as the entire description (Revelation1:13 sqq.) shows, the
Son of God, although he does not there receive that precise name. But in the
present epistle he expresslydesignates himselfas such, because, especiallyin
Revelation2:27, this glory of his is assertedin accordance withPsalms 2. The
two other designations, derived from Revelation1:14-15, have their
significance in the fact that the Lord with his eyes of flame penetrates(1216)
all, and with his feet like brass treads down every thing impure and
malevolent.(1217)

Revelation2:18. τῆς ἐν θυατείροις ἐκκλησίας)The Alex. cod., and also
Tertullian, read τῷ ἐν θυατίροις, without the addition of the word
ἐκκλησίας.(36)Where the angels of the sevenchurches are mentioned
together, ch. Revelation1:20, the name of the church at Thyatira is not
excepted. Now, where the series comes separatelyto the angelin Thyatira, the
omissionof the word church (for some in ancient times said that there was no
church there at that time) certainly agrees with the small number of
Christians in that town. An address is made to them separatelyin Revelation
2:24. Among the Hebrews, ten persons at leastwere required to constitute a
holy assembly:again, when there were seventeenChristians at Neocæsarea,
Gregorywas given to them as bishop. Therefore the flock at Thyatira might
have been small and unknown, which could scarcelysupport the name of a
church, and yet had an angel. St Carpus is reported to have been here.
Matthew Poole's EnglishAnnotations on the Holy Bible
Thyatira was a city of Mysia or Lydia, not far from Philippi, the chief city of
Macedonia;for Lydia, who traded in purple, and was of this city, went to
Philippi to trade, as we read, Acts 16:12,14.
Eyes like unto a flame of fire: see Revelation1:14,15:it signifies either angry
eyes, or quick and piercing eyes. The comparing of
his feetto fine brass, seemethto signify both the purity and holiness of his
ways and methods of providence, and also his firmness and steadiness in
them.

IV. THYATIRA.—The working Church, yet too carelessofChristian truth
and purity, Revelation2:18-28.
18. Thyatira—From the renowned capital, Pergamos,to the still more
renowned Sardis, our apostle would find a strait south-easternRomanroad:
he would be obliged to turn a little aside to the eastto the lessertownof
Thyatira. When Alexander the Greatdrove the Persianpowerout of Ionia, he
and his successorsplanted therein a number of cities, filling them with
inhabitants from his ownMacedonia. Ofthese cities one was Thyatira. This
city was filled with a number of industrial classesorguilds, namely: bakers,
potters, weavers, tanners, dyers, etc. Hence “Lydia of Thyatira” was found at
Philippi, Macedonia, by Paul, and she became the first EuropeanChristian
convert. She was “a seller of purple,” probably the cloth, the “imperial
purple,” not the dye alone. She was, doubtless, a Macedonianby descent, a
Lydian by birth, a Philippian by residence. She bore the name of her native
province, for Lydia was no doubt her proper name. Altogether Luke’s
narrative places her as a gracefulfigure in early Christian history. How vivid
the contrastbetweenLydia of Thyatira and Jezebelof Thyatira! It is curious
to note that the American missionary, Brewer, in 1831, found the guild of
dyers still working at the occupationin Thyatira. It was never a greatcity, but
a thrifty manufacturing town. The modern town is said by Svoboda (The
SevenChurches of Asia, 1869)to contain 15,000inhabitants, of whom two
thirds are Turks, one third Greek Christians, with a few Armenians. He adds,
“The whole trade is in the hands of the Christian population, as it generallyis
throughout the East, the Christians comprising the most industrious and
intelligent part of the population.”
Son of God—St. John had identified him as son of man in remembrance of the
human humiliation in which he once had knownhim, he here identifies
himself as that same son in his glorification. The promises at close ofthis
epistle are takenfrom the secondpsalm, in which that sonship is described in
its power.
Eyes… feet—Quotedfrom St. John’s picture of him, Revelation1:14-15. The
eyes are alluded to in searcheth, Revelation2:23.
PeterPett's Commentary on the Bible
The Letter To The Church In Thyatira (Revelation2:18-29).
‘And to the angelof the church in Thyatira, write, These things says the Son
of God, who has his eyes like a flame of fire, and his feetare like burnished
brass.’
The fact that these descriptions of the Son of Man are used in relation to
Thyatira confirms that they contain the ideas of discerning judgment,
powerful eyes that burn into the heart, and powerful feet that tread down evil.
(See for eyes Psalms 11:4-6; Proverbs 15:3; Proverbs 20:8; Isaiah 1:16;
Jeremiah5:3; Jeremiah16:17; Jeremiah32:19; Zechariah12:4 and for feet
Isaiah14:25; Isaiah41:25; Isaiah63:1-6). Here the true identity of the Son of
Man is openly declared, He is ‘the Son of God’. This is mentioned to put extra
stress on the warnings.
Expository Notes ofDr. Thomas Constable
1. Destinationand description of Christ2:18
Thyatira was the smallestof the seven cities, but it was the one that received
the longestletter. It lay about45 miles to the southeastofPergamum. It was
famous for its textiles, especiallythe production of purple dye (cf. Acts 16:14),
and its trade guilds.
Flame-like eyes suggestdiscerning and severe judgment (cf. Revelation1:14).
Burnished (highly reflective) bronze feetin this context picture a warrior with
protectedfeet (cf. Revelation1:15; Daniel 10:6). "Sonof God" emphasizes
Jesus Christ"s deity and right to judge. This is the only use of this title in
Revelation, though it is practically equivalent to "Messiah" (cf. Psalm2:12;
Luke 4:41; John 1:34; John 1:49; John 3:18; John 5:25; John 10:36; John
11:4; John 11:27; John 20:31). The main localgod in Thyatira was Tyrimnas
who, his worshippers said, was a sonof the gods. They pictured him on the
city coins as a warrior riding a horse and wielding a double-edgedbattle ax in
judgment.
Schaff's Popular Commentary on the New Testament
Revelation2:18. The fourth church addressedis that of Thyatira, a city finely
situated in a rich and well-watereddistrict of Asia Minor, at no greatdistance
from Pergamos, but possessing none of the political importance of the latter.
It is interesting to notice in connectionwith Acts 16:14, though it does not
concernus at present, that Thyatira was famous for its purple or scarletdyes.
The sun-god was the leading objectof worship to the heathen inhabitants of
the city; and it has been thought that there is thus a peculiar propriety in the
light in which Jesus presents Himself to its church, as One whose ‘eyes are as
a flame of fire.’ For the description now given of Himself by the great Head of
the Church, cp. chap. Revelation1:14-15. The most remarkable part of it is
that in which He designates Himself the Son of God. It was as One ‘like unto a
Son of man’ that He had been beheld by the Seerin chap. Revelation1:13,
although that description was in no degree intended to exclude the thought of
His essentialDivinity. He was really the Sonof Godlike unto a son of man.
Now, however, the Divine aspectofHis personis brought prominently
forward, yet not simply because in this Epistle He is to speak ofexecuting
judgment, for He both executes judgment in other Epistles, and He does so as
Son of man (John 5:27; see note there), but because Divine Sonship is part of
that constitution of His personupon which it becomes the Church constantly
to dwell. Perhaps also the distinct phase of the Church upon which we enter in
the secondgroup of these Epistles may explain the prominence given to the

She is now to be lookedat in her struggle with the world (see remarks at close
of the sevenEpistles);let her learn that ‘God is on her side.’
The Expositor's Greek Testament
Revelation2:18. χαλκολιβ. Some localallusion to the bronze-work for which
Thyatira was famous. Son of God (cf. Kattenbusch ii. 563 f.) is practically an
equivalent for messiah(Luke 4:41), or for the superhuman personality of
Jesus as divinely commissioned(cf. Grill, pp. 76–77)to carry out God’s
purpose for his people (cf. John 10:36). But the expressionhas paganas well
as Jewishcolouring; and there is undoubtedly an apologetic allusionto the
similar terminology of the Imperial cultus (cf. Introd. § 6).
JosephBenson's Commentaryof the Old and New Testaments
Revelation2:18. And unto the angelof the church in Thyatira write — “Next
to Pergamos is Thyatira situated, at the distance of about forty-eight miles to
the south-east. At present the city is called by the Turks Akhisar, or The
White Castle, from the greatquantities of white marble there abounding.
Only one ancient edifice is left standing: the rest, even the churches, are so
destroyed, that no vestiges ofthem are to be found. The principal inhabitants
are Turks, who have here eight mosques. So terribly have the divine
judgments, denounced in this letter, been poured upon this church!”
“Akhizar, the ancientThyatira,” observes the Rev. H. Lindsay, “is said to
contain about thirty thousand inhabitants; of whom three thousand are
Christians, all Greeks, exceptabout two hundred Armenians. There is,
however, but one Greek church and one Armenian. The superior of the Greek
church, to whom I presentedthe Romaic Testament, esteemedit so greata
treasure that he earnestlypressedme, if possible, to spare another, that one
might be securedto the church, and be free from accidents, while the other
went round among the people for their private reading. I have, therefore,
since my return hither, sent him four copies.” Write; These things saith the
Son of God — See how greathe is who appeared like a Son of man, Revelation
1:13; who hath eyes bright and penetrating, like unto a flame of fire —
Searching the reins and the heart, Revelation2:23; and his feetlike fine brass
— Denoting his immense strength. Job comprises both these particulars,
namely, his wisdom to discern whateveris amiss, and his powerto avenge it,
in one sentence, (Job42:2,)saying, No thought is hidden from him, and he can
do all things. Or the latter emblem, his feet being like fine brass, may signify
that all his ways are gloriously just and holy.
Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible - Unabridged
And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son
of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine
brass;
Thyatira - in Lydia, south of Pergamos.Lydia, the purple sellerof this city,
convertedat Philippi, a Macedoniancity (with which Thyatira, as being a
Macedoniancolony, had naturally much contact), was probably the
instrument of first carrying the Gospelto her native town. John follows the
geographicalorder;for Thyatira lay a little to the left of the road from
Pergamos to Sardis (Strabo, 13:, 4).
Son of God ... eyes like ... fire ... feet are like fine brass - or 'glowing brass'
(resumed from Revelation1:14-15). Again, His attributes accordwith His
address. "Sonof God" is, from Psalms 2:7; Psalms 2:9, referred to in
Revelation2:27. 'Eyes like flame,' etc., answers to Revelation2:23, "I am He
which searcheththe reins and hearts." "Feetare like fine brass" answers to
Revelation2:27, "as the vesselsofa potter shall they be broken to shivers,"
He treading them to pieces.
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(18) Thyatira was situated betweenPergamos andSardis, a little off the main
road which connectedthese two cities. It was a Macedoniancolony, founded
by Alexander the Greatafter the overthrow of the Persianempire. The
Macedoniancolonists appearto have introduced the worship of Apollo,
honoured as the Sun-god, under the name of Tyrimnas. It has been thought by
some that the descriptionhere given of Christ—“the eyes of flame”—was
selectedin allusion to this worship of the Sun-god, under the form of some
dazzlingly ornamented image. Certainly close commercialintercourse
connectedthe daughter colony with its mother city. There seemto have been
various mercantile guilds in the colony—bakers, potters, tanners, weavers,
and dyers. The dye-trade was, perhaps, the most important. Lydia, the seller
of purple, was in all likelihoodconnectedwith the guild of dyers; and her
appearance in Philippi is an illustration of the trade relations of Macedonia
and Thyatira. To her the Christian community at Thyatira may have owedits
beginning. “She who had gone forth for a while, to buy and sell, and get gain,
when she returned home may have brought home with her richer
merchandise than any she had lookedto obtain” (Trench). The population
was of a mixed character, and included, besides Asiatics, Macedonians,
Italians, and Chaldeans. The messagewhichis sent to the Christians dwelling
among them is from “the Son of God.” This is noteworthy, when we
remember how persistently the other term, “Sonof Man,” is used throughout
the Book ofRevelation, and that here only is the phrase “Sonof God” used;
but it suits, as does the whole description, the messagewhichbreathes the
language ofsovereigntyand righteous sternness. The “eyes offlame” will
searchthe reins and the hearts (Revelation2:23); the “feetof fine brass” will
tread down the enemies, and smooth the path before them, who will have
powerover the nations.

Walter Scott's Commentary on Revelation
THE SPIRIT'S ADDRESS TO THYATIRA
(Revelation2:18-29).
DISTINCTIVE FEATURES.
Revelation2:18. — "To the angelof the Church in Thyatira write: These
things says the Son of God, He that hath His eyes as a flame of fire, and His
feet are like fine brass." This is the only Church of the seven in which a
woman's name is mentioned. Jezebel, the wickedconsortof the apostate king
of Israel, who was but a toolin her hands, the upholder and patroness of the
worstforms of idolatry, a murderess, yet withal a cleverand determined
woman, is the prominent personnamed in the address to the angel. We cannot
regard it as a mere coincidence that the earlier mention of Thyatira is in
connectionwith a woman (Acts 16:1-40), but a very different characterto the
one named here. There are striking points both of contrastand resemblance
betweenLydia, the active, generous, decidedChristian, and her relation to
Paul (Acts 16:1-40), and Jezebel, the zealous and equally large-heartedpagan,
and her relation to Elijah (1 Kings 18:1-46;1 Kings 19:1-21).
This fourth epistle is the longestof the seven, and marks the commencement
of the secondgroup in which the history of eachChurch runs on till the
secondComing of the Lord. The first direct reference in these epistles to the
secondAdvent is found here (vv. 25-28).
The hopeless, helpless, corrupt condition of the Church — a condition out of
which it cannot emerge, and one incapable of improvement, is another noted
feature, distinguishing it thus from the three previous churches. Here, then, is
an active propagationof evil and corrupting teaching from within. Pergamos
toleratedcertain grave evils; but Thyatira suffers them to be taught, and
herself becomes the mother of similar evil systems, "herchildren." What a
truly remarkable feature of this Church!
Another noticeable characteristic is that a remnant is now formally
recognisedand separatelyaddressed(v. 24), thus clearlydistinguishing the
Church or mass from the remnant or faithful company.
Further, the call to hear which in Ephesus, Smyrna, and Pergamos precedes
the promises to the overcomer, in Thyatira and succeeding churches is found
after the promises, closing up in eachcase the respective address. In the first
three epistles the Church stands related to the call to hear, whereas in the last
four the overcomers are in relation to the words, "He that hath an ear, let him
hear."
Another striking feature in the address to this Church is that for the first and
only time, in the course of these epistles, the name of the divine Speakeris
introduced — the Son of God; this title of personaland divine relationship is
not used in any other part of the Apocalypse.
THE DIVINE SPEAKER.
18. — "These things says the Son of God." The humanity of the Lord and His
relation to the race are conveyedin the title "Sonof Man." The Deity of the
Lord and His relationto God are intimated in the title "Sonof God." His
glory and relation to the churches as beheld by John was as "Sonof Man"
(Revelation1:13). Why, then, is this divine title "Sonof God" introduced, and
only here? The answeris at hand. Thyatira historically covers the Dark or
Middle Ages, and pictures in brief terms and symbols the popish system, the
worstbearing the Christian name that has ever disgracedthe earth. In popery
every true thought of the Church is lost. True, she boasts loudly of unity, but
it is a unity enforced when and where she canby the potent arguments of the
faggot, the fire, and the dungeon — as unlike divine unity effectedby the Holy
Ghost(1 Corinthians 12:13)as light is to darkness. Poperyshuts out Christ
completely as Head of His Body, the Church, and as Administrator of the
House of God. Hence the introduction of this title in the opening words of the
address. NotPeter, but Christ, the Sonof the living God, is the Church's
foundation (Matthew 16:16-18). Peter, too, is made the administrator of the
Church instead of Christ. But the Lord never gives up His rights, and just
when and where it were most needful to insist on His divine prerogative as
Son of God it is done. If the Church has been drifting from bad to worse, so
much the more need to insist on the divine glory and relationship of our Lord.
If that goes, then truly all is lost. The title "Sonof God" is in no wise a
dispensationalone; a title, moreover, which was given to Him on His entrance
into this world as Man (Psalms 2:1-12; Acts 13:33, omit the word "again").
HIS EYES AND FEET.
18. — "He that hath His eyes as a flame of fire and His feet like fine brass."
This is part of the detailed description of the glorified Sonof Man previously
beheld (Revelation1:14-15). Here, however, these two attributes of stern
sovereigntyare exercisedby the Son of God. It is wellto remember that He to
Whom all judgment is committed, and Who will infallibly execute His own
judgment, is not only Man (John 5:22; John 5:27), but He is God as well. He
who wields the sceptre is divine as well as human. His eyes as "a flame of fire"
refer to His moral intolerance of evil. He will searchout sin and discover it
howeverhidden. Who or what can escapethose eyes as a flame of fire? "His
feet as fine brass." WhatHis eyes discover, that His feet shall tread upon.
Unbending judicial action, inflexible justice, is symbolisedby the "feetlike
fine brass." Everysystematisedform of evil bearing the Christian name (v.
23) must be destroyed. The mountains of Edom in the last days afford an
awful example of divine vengeance andof the application of the striking
symbol here employed (Isaiah 63:1-6). When the Lord comes in Personto
make goodHis sovereignright over the whole scene under Heaven His feet are
likened to "pillars of fire" (Revelation10:1-2), a slight change in the wording
of the imagery, implying the immovable, steadfastpurpose and actof the
Lord in the stern assertionof His universal rights. "Fire" is the expressive
symbol of judgment, whether upon Christ, the sacrifice (Lev. l), or upon the
wicked(Mark 9:43; Luke 16:24;2 Thessalonians 1:8).

See comments at Revelation1:20 for the explanation of the angel. In this letter
the author states his personalname before giving a description of himself and
it is the Son of God. Comparing His eyes and feetto fire and brass is explained
at Revelation1:14-15.
Thyatira was a city which lay on the borders of the regions of Lydia and
Mysia, opposite unto Macedonia, andsouthwards of Pergamos,in Asia the

has eyes as a flame of fire, and his feet like to clearbrass. The three predicates
form the ground at once of the threatening and of the promise. The prophet
shows those, who from fear of the powerof heathenism were weak towards
the Nicolaitans oreven inclined to go along with them, one whom they ought
much more to fear, and who cangive both victory and glory. The first
predicate itself exhibits a terrible character. Forin the passage, whichforms
the foundation for this name of Christ, he appears as one who smites the
heathen with an iron sceptre and dashes them in pieces as a potter's vessel.
Bengel:"The glorious name, Son of God, has been most fully disclosedin the
secondPsalm, and to that Psalmreference is also made in Revelation2:27 of
this epistle." The verse before us forms a commentary on the name. The eyes
as a flame of fire, and the clearbrass, are from ch. Revelation1:14. The flame
of fire does not bring to light, as Bengelfalselyinterprets here, but consumes.
Bengelremarks on the feetas of clearbrass:"It threatens secure persons who
think they can do what they please, and when impiety in them rises to the
highest pitch, they tread the Son of God under foot. But he will himself tread
his enemies under his feet, and will make them as the mire of the street."

church in Thyatira
See SevenChurches of Asia.
Thyatira means “sacrificeoflabor; odor of affliction.”1
Excavations atThyatira
2
Thyatira is very rarely mentioned in ancientliterature, and its site is covered
by the modern town of Akhisar, which betrays few outward signs of its past
and whose presence has prevented excavation. . . . Thyatira is first know to us
as a Seleucidcolony, whose foundation is ascribedto Seleucus Nicatorat the
time of his warwith Lysimachus. . . . The increasing abundance of later
inscriptions suggeststhat Thyatira, still of limited importance at the time of
the Revelation, reacheda peak of prosperity in the secondand third centuries.
The words of Rev. Rev. 2:19+ were addressedto a growing church in a
growing city.3
The most outstanding feature in Thyatiran life was probably the institution of
trade-guilds. . . . At Thyatira there were guilds of bakers, potters, workers in
brass, tanners, leather-cutters, workers in wooland flax, clothiers, dyers; the
workers in wooland the dyers were probably the most numerous, for the
manufacture and dyeing of woollengoods was a Lydian speciality, in which
Thyatira excelled.4
Not surprisingly, religionplayed no major role in Thyatira’s wayof life, for it
was not a major centerof Caesarworshipor Greek worship; its localgod was
Tyrimnus, a horse mounted god, armed with a battle-ax and a club. The only
notable thing about Thyatira religiouslywas that it was home to the oracle
Sambethe, an oracle presidedover by a female fortune teller.5
This church may have been establishedfrom Paul’s ministry to Lydia (Acts
Acts 16:14). “At the riverside at Philippa Lydia, a sellerof purple of Thyatira
became the first recordedChristian convert in Macedonia (Acts Acts
16:14).”6
Thyatira was famous for a purple or crimson dye manufactured from the
madder root, which was a cheaprival for the expensive Phoenicianmurex dye
made from a particular marine shellfish. Acts Acts 16:14 attests to this
specialty, for the Philippian convert, Lydia, was a sellerof purple fabrics who
hailed from Thyatira (she was 300 miles from her home city).7
Son of God
Frequent allusions to PsalmPs. 2:1 in the letter to Thyatira underscore both
the judgment of Jezebeland her children (Rev. Rev. 2:22-23+)and the
promises made to the overcomerwho is given “powerover the nations” (Rev.
Rev. 2:26+). (See Rev. Rev. 2:18+ cf. Ps. Ps. 2:9; Rev. Rev. 2:26+ cf. Ps. Ps.
2:8; Rev. Rev. 2:27+ cf. Ps. Ps. 2:9.8 ) This is the first instance in the letters to
the sevenchurches where the self-identification of Christ is in the form of a
title rather than a descriptive attribute.9
eyes like a flame of fire
The church at Thyatira had been allowing Jezebelto promote her
unscriptural teaching in their midst (Rev. Rev. 2:20+), but not the slightest
detail had escapedthe eyes of the Master. As discussedin Revelation1:14, the
eyes like a flame of fire indicate His omniscience and omnipresence. He is well
aware of what is happening within the church at Thyatira, especiallythose
things he opposes (Rev. Rev. 2:20+).
feet like fine brass
Fine brass is translated from a word of unknown derivation (only occurring
here and in RevelationRev. 1:15+) which probably denotes bright shining
metal or perhaps its purity or hardness. See commentary on Revelation1:15.
The imagery of both eyes and feetis that of impending judgment upon Jezebel
and her children (Rev. Rev. 2:22-23+). The judgment will serve as a witness of
His omniscience:“All the churches shall know that I am He who searchesthe
minds and hearts” (Rev. Rev. 2:23+).

JESUS'EYES OF FIRE
JESUS--HIS EYES OF FIRE
Continuing the descriptionof Jesus Christ, as He appearedto the Apostle
John on the island of Patmos in a vision. Todaywe’ll focus on Jesus’EYES--
like a FLAME of FIRE.
Revelation1:14-- “His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as
snow;and His EYES were as a FLAME OF FIRE.”
A FLAME of fire is the same as saying a BLAZING FIRE. Jesus’eyes were
full of FIERY INTENSITY. Whatdo you envision when you think of FIERY
EYES? Are these eyes which conveycomfort and compassion? Do they
softenwith love and adoration? Or are they blank, showing no emotion at
all? Mostdefinitely NO!
Eyes flashing like flames of fire are hot with passion. What kind of passion?
We might say anger, or at leastSOFTEN the angerA BIT, and say
"RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION." Eyes full of FIRE are NOT
COMFORTING. One look at an expressionsuch as that, and we’d desire to
run and hide. John fainted. (Revelation1:17)
Throughout the scripture, fire is used as a symbol of JUDGMENT. (Here we
go with that JUDGMENT idea again.)
When Jesus appears in a vision, which demonstrates His RIGHTEOUS
JUDGMENT, itfits THE CHARACTER of Revelation’s prophecy, which
shows God, and His Son Jesus, in a variety of upcoming JUDGMENTS. In
Genesis 19:24, FIRE is used to bring JUDGMENT uponSodom and
Gomorrah. In Exodus 9:24, a JUDGMENT fellupon Egypt--this time, hail
which was mingled with FIRE. In Ezekiel21:31, the WRATH of the Lord is
describedas a FIRE--“Iwill blow againstyou in the FIRE OF MY WRATH."
In Ezekiel38, verses 19 and 22 (which show the RESULTS of the Gog/Magog
invasion upon Israel), God is saidto actin “My jealousyand in the FIRE OF
MY WRATH." AND when God destroys the invading armies, He will do so
with pestilence and blood, with overflowing rain, and great hailstones, FIRE
and BRIMSTONE.
In our modern world, we EMPHASIZE how God is LOVE and MERCY--and
INDEED Godis just that. In our Christian era of the CHURCH, we live
under the shelter of God’s GRACE--His free GIFT to mankind through
Jesus’death and resurrection. We have the opportunity to respond to God’s
abounding and PERFECT LOVE--His AGAPE love, His UNCONDITIONAL
LOVE--the LOVE which LOVES because LOVE IS GOD’S NATURE AND
CORE, and a LOVE which He gives to ALL--without condition. (If we will
acceptit!)
But this is ONLY ONE SIDE of our Lord! He deals in JUDGMENT, too.
There are many people who believe the GOD of the OLD TESTAMENTwas a
harsh, judgmental, jealous, and unapproachable God, and that it was ONLY
in the OLD TESTAMENTthat God actedthat way. This assumption is NOT
true.
God exercisedGRACE, MERCY, PATIENCE, LONGSUFFERING and
LOVE in the Old Testament, and MANY CHAPTERS AND VERSES make
this clear. GRACE was demonstratedto Abraham, Noah, Moses,King David-
-a LONG LIST of Old Testament saints. These Old Testamentsaints HEARD
the GOSPEL(the GOOD NEWS)that God would send a SAVIOR. Without
SEEING Jesus--His life, ministry, death and resurrection--these Old
Testamentpeople BELIEVED God’s PROMISE, andthey received
SALVATION, by believing in the FUTURE sacrifice of God’s Son. (We in the
Church have an EASIER wayto believe, CALL IT 20/20 HINDSIGHT. We
can look BACK upon Jesus’work, which is ALREADY accomplishedfor us.
IF WE WILL BELIEVE! You could say that we are WITHOUT EXCUSE!)
ANOTHER FACT--The Old Testamentis NOT the ONLY place in scripture
where we read about God’s JUDGMENTfalling! In the earliestdays of a
YOUNG CHURCH, in Acts 5:1-11, JUDGMENT IMMEDIATELYFELL
upon Ananias and Sapphira, BECAUSE they CONSPIRED TO LIE to the
Holy Spirit. When confronted about their LIES, they FELL DEAD on the
spot! And GREAT FEAR came upon ALL the church.
When we delve further into our study of the book of Revelation, we’llsee
Jesus dealing in JUDGMENT to part of the SEVEN CHURCHES. He wields
a sharp two-edgedswordin the letter to the Church of Pergamos. His EYES
OF FIRE are viewed AGAIN (plus He’s got feetlike fine burnished hot brass)
in the letter to the Church of Thyatira. In Laodecia, we see Him nauseated,
spewing that Church out of His mouth. All these are pictures of
JUDGMENTS.
Throughout Revelation6 to 19, we read of JUDGMENT afterJUDGMENT.
Four horsemen of the Apocalypse. Falling stars. Earthquakes. Pestilences.
Darkness. A scorching sun. Hideous locusts (evil angels). Evil spirits like
frogs. Black smoke fromthe bottomless pit full of scorpion-like devils. Wars,
violence and bloodshed. Destructionof Mystery Babylon. Then FINALLY, at
last, after all the distressing WOES, JUDGMENTwill fall upon the armies
gatheredat Armageddon. God’s WRATH reaches its CLIMAX--cleansing
the world so that Jesus cansetup His PERFECT governmentof peace!
These elements of JUDGMENT are so different from the meek, polite, gentle,
loving Jesus that many of us learned about in Sunday School. Certainly, Jesus
is ALL those goodand pleasantthings (and we’d never frighten children by
telling them of judgment).
But the TRUTH IS THIS--Jesus BRINGS the JUDGMENTSof God, as He
opens a certain seven-sealedscrollin Revelation6. His eyes FLASH with
BLAZING FIRE, a FLAME of FIRE, as He drives out the enemies and
orchestratesGod’s JUDGMENTS. His ANGER FALLS upon SIN, upon
SATAN, upon ANTICHRIST and the FALSE PROPHET, upon MYSTERY
BABYLON, upon WICKED ARMIES and HEATHEN NATIONS, upon ALL
that is EVIL.
His angerNEVER FALLS upon His redeemedpeople. Instead, His ANGER
and JUDGMENTSSAVE His people, and ALL OF CREATION, the
EARTH! In Matthew 24:22, Jesus said, “Exceptthose days be shortened,
there should be NO FLESH SAVED: but for THE ELECT’S SAKE, those
days shall be shortened.” Evil would TOTALLY DESTROYthe earth. But,
PRAISE JESUS, His JUDGMENTSwill SAVE the creation!
The EYES of Jesus, as wellas BURNING with THE FIRE of His
INDIGNATION, are PURE EYES. They CANNOT behold EVIL.
“Thou art of PURER EYES than to behold evil, and CANST NOT look upon
iniquity…” Habbakuk 1:13.
The EYES of Jesus SEE and KNOW all things. Eyes of FIRE penetrate; they
see right INTO the MINDS and HEARTS of people. It’s impossible to HIDE
from His PENETRATING eyes ofFIRE.
“Neitheris there any creature that is NOT manifest in His sight: but ALL
THINGS are nakedand open unto the EYES of Him with Whom we have to
do.” Hebrews 4:13.
Truly, the EYES of our Lord BURN DEEP into the INNERMOST being of
anyone who belongs to Jesus--He cansee our MOTIVES, our THOUGHTS,
our VERY CORE. This is WHY it’s of UTMOST IMPORTANCE thatwe
CONFESSoursins and shortcomings as soonas we are aware of them. When
the EYES of Jesus, with His FLAME of FIRE penetrates, let us be found
BLAMELESS and SPOTLESS, throughour repentance.
Those EYES of BLAZING FIRE will SCORCHinto the innermost being of
anyone who is unrighteous--within those who have rejectedHim. These
people will have NO EXCUSE before the EYES of the Almighty Lord.
Think of a dad, arms crossedoverhis chest, foottapping on the floor, as he
glowers AT YOU, the disobedient child. Think of the meanestteacherduring
your elementary schooldays, pacing the floor in front of the blackboard,
slapping a ruler againsther palm as she glares straightat you. How did you
feel? Like squirming? Like crawling under a table or desk? But you had
nowhere to hide; you knew you were caught, and GUILTY. And the
PUNISHMENT was coming!
Then apply this idea to the FIERY EYES of Jesus. It’s very unsettling to have
a PURE PERSONstare atus steadily, especiallyif we’re harboring some
secretimpurity in our lives. While the eyes of Jesus will most certainly glow
with love and compassion, theyalso FLASH with the INTENSITYof His
RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT.
We don’t have to be CAUGHT needing REBUKE, or evenworse, suffer
JUDGMENT. Atall times, we’re JUST A PRAYER AWAY from being
CLEANSED, BEING FORGIVEN andRESTORED to a PERFECT guilt-free
FELLOWSHIP with our Lord.
Have you committed some sin? Thenconfess it, be forgiven and cleansed
from all unrighteousness.
Have you NEVER askedJesus to be your SAVIOR and LORD. There’s no
better time to do so than NOW. Do it. Confess your rebellion againstGod,
then ask for forgiveness, andinvite Jesus to come live inside your heart. He
will. Immediately, you’ll sense a flow of peace, andrelief. You are now
RIGHT with God through FAITH in Jesus, and as you walk in Him, you’ll
NEVER see His BURNING EYES OF JUDGMENT.
It’s my prayer that many will be made RIGHT with God, BEFOREit’s too
late. The days of the terrible Tribulation rapidly approach. Don’t allow
yourself to GET CAUGHT in that time when JUDGMENTSwill FALL across
this earth!
Jesus is the WAY. Flee to His safety; He’ll gatheryou up like a lost and
abandoned sheep, dress your wounds and comfort you.
Have a most perfect and awesome day!

Jesus’Eyes are like Blazing Fire
October6, 2017 AshleyCortesProphetic Revelation& Teaching
There are many symbols in our culture that we have grown to accept, permit,
covet, or plain dismiss in our apathy. The Lord says in Hosea 4:6, My people
are destroyedfrom a lack of knowledge. We are told over and over again
throughout scripture to grow in the knowledge ofChrist. We know that the
enemy roams about like a roaring lion seeking those to whom he candevour.
He does this often by presenting counterfeits. He promotes these various
forms of defilement in popular culture throughout the generations of
humankind. We unknowingly wearclothing, jewelry, decorate our homes, and
entertain idols –exalting the ancient beliefs of false religions and opening
doors of the demonic realm into our minds and hearts. There is truly nothing
new UNDER the sun and when we begin to realize the newesttrend is often
the oldestspirit looking to find a gatewayinto our souls we will quickly shut
the door – if we have discernment that is.
One of the symbols that is continuing to grow in popularity is the “evil eye”,
also knownas an amulet to ward off the evil eye. I think this is the epitome of
what Jesus means when he says in Mark 3:23, How can Satandrive out
Satan? The world has come up with more witchcraft to ward off witchcraft.
It’s absolute insanity. These “eyes” come in many forms. In Hinduism, you
may be familiar with the eye that’s drawn in the palm of a right hand. It’s
known as a hamsa. Or, perhaps you’ve seenthe Egyptian eye, the Godof Ra,
the bold black outlining of an eye with a curled line from its corner, to
symbolize a teartrack. I remember drawing this eye as a child, but had no
idea why or even where it came from. I was drawn to its art form. Surely,
you’ve noticedthe eye that has stamped itself on the back of our one dollar
bill. It sits above a pyramid. This eye many say, stems from a Masonic symbol.
Or what about the eyes of Mona Lisa? Mona Lisa’s eyes themselves have
found their way into best selling novels, they’re the primary focus of every art
textbook, and they are still discussedon history channels. Why are these
various forms of eyes so popular throughout history and within our culture
today? Why do so many idolize them?
The devil is constantly looking for open doorways into a person’s heart to take
up residence. One of the tools he uses is worldly culture, society, history,
philosophy, fashion, and the entertainment industry as a way to captivate his
audience. The evil eye, although it has takenon many forms is the same thing.
It’s an evil agenda, a counterfeit, to the truth. We read in 2 Corinthians 4:4
that the god of this age (the devil) has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so
they cannot see the glory of Christ. We also read in Ephesians 2:2 how the
devil is the prince of the air and his spirit is at work in those who are
disobedient. Essentially, the less we have of the world in us, the greaterwe will
see the light of the gospelof Christ and discern the counterfeits. In this, we
can drive out darkness by the Spirit of God.
I remember in one of my college counseling classesmy professorencouraged
us to look in people’s eyes. She said in this, we could gatherinformation
about how the personfelt, what they needed, and how they were suffering.
Beyond looking into client’s eyes, she also encouragedus to look into the
textbook’s psychologist’s eyes. She would ask us to infer their history based
upon their eyes. At this time I believed this offered unusual insight, but today
I see this as witchcraft. The problem with this is that we were not drawing
upon the Spirit of the Lord to discern the intents of a person or their hurt, but
instead we were drawing upon our own selves and our interpretations. In an
extreme way, what she askedus to do reminds me of hypnotism.
The Word speaks aboutthe eyes of God. These eyes are holy eyes, righteous
eyes, and perfect eyes. They do not stray from the one they love. They do not
manipulate, nor deceive. They do not mock, nor are they haughty. In
revelation we read that Jesus’eyes are like blazing fire. As we look upon
Christ, we should not only see his affectionfor us, but His desire to purify us.
We should see His passionto burn awaythose things that are not good for us.
Those things that are counterfeit to who He is as our God. In Jeremiah 6:27
The Lord tells Jeremiahthat He has made him a testerof metals and the
people the ore, so Jeremiahmay observe and testtheir ways (Jer 6:27).
Jeremiahwas an assayer. This was a picture of Jesus Christ being our
ultimate assayer. An assayeris someone who analyzes an alloy to determine
the amount of gold, silver, or other metal in it. Jesus Christ is not only
examining our hearts, but is testing us to see if we will act according to the
intents of our heart. He allows circumstancesand events to pressure us, so
that He may see what comes forth. Is it stubble, or is it precious metal? If
stubble, it shall be burned in the eyes of Christ. Yet, without His eyes, the
stubble will remain. We must surrender to the eyes of Christ. And, welcome
His process, knowing He sees the precious metal inside of us.
I believe that as the darkness grows darker, God’s FIRE is increasing. I
believe, we as the body of Christ, have entered into a seasonwhere God is
increasing his GAZE upon us. We may see the tactics and pit-stops of the
enemy, but if we turn our focus awayand look upon God we will see He has
been looking for us.
2 Chronicles 16:9 says, Forthe eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout
the earth that He may STRONGLYSUPPORT those whoseHEARTS are
completely His.
What if we beganseeing God’s fire as a goodthing, a welcoming thing, a
purifying thing? What if we stopped being offended and embracedit? What if
we believed that He is supporting us, not resisting us? John came to baptize
with water. Jesus Christ baptizes with FIRE.

— Excerpts from “Jesus’Eyes ofFire,” Part1 —
• THE TWOFOLD DIMENSION OF HIS EYES OF FIRE 14 …His eyes [are]
like a flame of fire. (Rev. 1:14) o When Jesus stoodbefore John with eyes of
fire, John fell like a dead man, as we read in Revelation1:17-18. o There are
two practicalapplications to Jesus’ eyes of fire: the more we grow in the
revelation of His eyes of fire, we grow in the fear of God, but we also mature
everything. The implication of understanding this, even a little, really affects
the waywe relate to God in a very powerful way. The more I understand that
more we understand this, the strongeror the more mature my intimacy with
God is. We see that He sees us, that He feels what we feel, that His eyes are
always on us, that we move His heart. And He moves our heart as well. The
connectionis in the knowledge ofHis eyes being on us. • THE
OMNISCIENCE OF JESUS & THE PURIFYING POWER OF HIS EYES o
Jesus is omniscient, meaning He possessesallknowledge. Everything there is
to know, He knows it. There is no fragment of information that He does not
through everything in the same way that fire penetrates metal. His eyes of fire
penetrate to the core reality and the truth of everything that exists. He sees
everything that is goodand everything that is evil, without any distortion at
all. He sees behind the scenesand below the surface. o The implication is that
He has no distortion of truth, none whatsoever. He has no wrong information;
human judge, even though he may try his bestto judge impartially, is affected
by his own dysfunctions as a human, his own woundings, his own biases, his

escapesHis knowledge. He sees the whole thing. Jesus takes carefulnotice of
everything and everyone, good and bad. o Knowing this equips us to walk in
the fearof God and in intimacy. o Fire is not only pure, it also purifies in the
natural realm. When there is any defilement in metal, you put it through fire
and it becomes purified. If there’s defilement in water, you put it through fire,
pure, but they purify us. • PSALM 139 – DAVID’S SECRET TO
CONSISTENTLOVE o David is speaking in Psalm139. This is one of the
secrets ofDavid’s life: David understood that the Lord’s eyes were on him.
Truly this is one of the greatsecrets ofthe power of his consistentlove. If we
understood more of what David understood, our love would be more
consistent. o God understands our thoughts from afar. 2 You know my sitting
Basically, Davidis saying, “You know what I’m thinking; even when the
thought is being formed in me, You can see it.” o God comprehends our paths.
3 You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all
my ways. 4 For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O LORD, You
Someone may ask us, “Why did you do that?” You reply, “Well, to be honest,
I don’t know why I did it.” But David said about the Lord, “He comprehends
why we do what we do, but we certainly don’t know the implications of where
it’s going to bring us. We might, a little, but the Lord comprehended the
implications of the decisions David was making today and where they would
take him. o God is acquainted with all of our ways, motives and thoughts.
3…And are acquaintedwith all my ways. 4 For there is not a word on my
tongue, but behold, O LORD, You know it altogether. (Ps. 139:3-
David says, “You know it altogether. You know what I meant to say when I
said it, but I didn’t sayit very clearly. You know everything that I intend to
the Lord knows us far better than we know ourselves. Thatis why we can
trust Him. That is one reasonwhy we trust His leadership more than we trust
our own leadership:He knows us far better than we know ourselves. 6 Such
knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain it. (Ps. 139:6)

one thing we ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to us is to show us what He sees, and
to show us the implications of what He knows. David said, “It is too
wonderful; it is awesome. The implications are wonderful. I can’t get hold of
the fullness of it,” but, Beloved, we are on the journey to understand these
eyes of fire. o What Jesus thinks about us is precious to us if we get our minds
around it. 17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great
is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they would be more in number
has so many thoughts about you. Did you know that Jesus has more thoughts
about you than the number of grains of sand on the seashore?Davidgrasped
that. He didn’t grasp the fullness of it, but he had a fundamental revelation of
steady in our efforts to love God, because so oftenin our efforts we’re coming
the powerof that, because he saw that God understoodthe ground he was
gaining. One of our big challenges is that our labors are small. We do our little
service and we’re reaching to love God, but it doesn’t seemlike we get very
far. So our increase looks reallysmall and sometimes not at all. But the Lord
sees the truth about what is in your heart in the goodway, not just in the bad
away. • THERE IS NO CREATURE HIDDEN There is no creature hidden
from His sight, but all things are nakedand open to the eyes of Him to whom
we must give account. (Heb. 4:13) o All things are naked, meaning He sees the
behind-the-scenes truth of every situation in life. Nothing can be maskedor
altered. The truth of it cannotbe hidden from Him. He sees it as it is with no
covering. o It is Him to whom we give an account. We give an accountof our
life to a man who is fully God and fully Man. His name is Jesus. • THE FEAR
OF GOD IN JESUS’FIERY GAZE o His eyes see our failure. This produces
the fearof God in us. The fearof God is the awarenessthat God sees
everything. The more I’m aware He sees everything, the more I have the fear
of God in my heart, and the more I am carefu
If you know He sees youand that it matters to Him, then it matters to you.
things matter to Him, even the small reaches ofmy heart when I say, “Lord, I
want to be Yours. I feeldull and sluggish, but I want to give myself to You. I
want to be fully Yours today.” It matters to Him. When I know that, then it’s
worth reaching to Him because it matters to Him. • OUR SOUL’S DESIRE,
THE REFINER’S FIRE Butwho can endure the day of His coming? And who
can stand when He appears? ForHe is like a refiner’s fire

And like launderers’ soap. (Malachi3:2) o In Malachi3:2, the prophet
Malachilinks purity with fire, because fire purifies. It purifies metal; it
purifies water;it purifies various elements. o Malachi3 is about the end
times. Of course the principle of the refiner’s fire is true throughout history,
but when Jesus reveals His glory, it says in Malachi3 that He—meaning the
Messiah—willmanifestit as a refiner’s fire. o The refiner’s fire isn’t just a
negative. It’s not just, “Ouch, that hurts.” You hear people say, “I’m going
through the fire... ouch!” There is an “ouch!” dimension to the fire, but there
is a purifying and impartation dimension to the fire, too. • THE
REMEMBRANCE OF HIS EYES o In His eyes He sees and remembers
everything we do in love towards Him, even the weak love we show Him. o
The fact that He sees andremembers what we do makes every single day
relevant. It makes every hour of every day relevant. Nothing is wasted. No
hour is boring when we understand that He sees andremembers even the
small giving of our selfto Him, even the small offerings of love. They move His
heart. This makes every day important, whether anyone else sees whatyou’re
doing as important or not. o The very fact that He sees and remembers
crowns your life with glory. He sees youright now. The reaching of your heart
moves Him and He records it. o You will never have a day that is
unimportant. Never. o He sees our burdens; He sees our pain and our
struggle. This is one aspectof walking in intimacy with Him, knowing that He
is with us in all that causes us pain and struggle. • THE PRAISE THAT
COMES FROM GOD “... the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the
hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the heart. Then each
reveals the godly counsels of your heart, the longings and the setting of your
heart to do right, He will affirm you. He will praise you, which means that He
will point it out in an affirming way. I think this will be the most surprising
brokenness that they don’t have any esteemfor the love they have. They don’t
count the love; all they do is count the failure. They count what comes up
short and don’t esteemthe setting of their heart, but the Lord does and it
your character. He sees the cry to grow in greater love. He sees every
movement of your heart to love Him. o THE SUBTLE STIRRINGS OF OUR
the Spirit. When you did that, whether today or yesterday, you said, “Oh
Lord, this is not what I want.” The Lord says, “Oh, that touches Me.” He sees
that movement of your heart and records it in His book. Do you know the way
you move Him? Do you know that every time you repent of compromise, it
moves Him and He records it in His book? Jesus seesour desire to obey Him
before it is manifest in our characterin a mature way.

weakness, causesus to open our spirit and run to Him insteadof running from
believers feel such a sense ofcondemnation, when they stumble. Even though
they have repented, they feellike it’s more appropriate to put themselves on
probation for at leasta few days. They feellike they ought to feelmiserable
for a while after all they did. If they feel miserable for a few days or a few
weeks, then it balances the score out. That is absolutely bad doctrine; it’s
weakness, then we learn to repent when we have failed, call it “sin,” declare
war on it, and stand back before the Lord, ready to run towards Him. When
we do that, we open our spirit in confidence insteadof drawing back in shame.
That is what the devil wants us to do. He wants us to close our spirit and
think, “I am so bad. I am so bad...” The Lord says, “Lift your chin up and
look Me in the eyes. Let’s talk. I love you. I have alreadyforgiven you. Run
towards Me. Do you not see how I feel? Do you not know what I see whenI see
you?” • THE DAY WILL REVEAL OUR WORKS 11 Forno other
foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12
Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones,
wood, hay, straw, 13 eachone’s work will become clear;for the Day will
declare it, because it will be revealedby fire; and the fire will testeachone’s
work, of what sort it is. (1 Cor 3:11-13)o This is talking about their life work
and all their acts of service. The fire of Jesus’eyes is testing it. o Some people
get the wrong idea that eachman’s work is testedby how big the work was or
how famous they became through the work. The shocking thing is that on that
day “the work will become clear,” andit will be clearhow important the little
things are to Jesus. Many people can’t see with clarity the importance of what
they’re doing. The Lord says, “Iwrite it all in My book. All of that will
become clearand evident on that day.” o I think what will shock us is how
important and how big the little things are. You will receive a reward; your
life will be revealed. o Many people have the image that what is big is good.
Big canbe good, if it is the will of God, but remember that 99.9 percentof the
Body of Christ in all of history has only done small things. That is the will of
God, and that is good. They will be rewarded in a very surprising, very big
way when they stand before God. • “NOT UNJUST TO FORGET ANY OF
OUR WORK” 10 ForGod is not unjust to forgetyour work and labor of love
which you have shown towardHis name, in that you have ministered to the
saints, and do minister. (Heb 6:10) o He remembers the labor of love which
you have shownin His name. His eyes of fire see it, and the fire canpenetrate
to the truth of it. He doesn’t see the smallness of it and say, “Oh, forgetit; it’s
only a small thing.” His eyes of fire see the truth of it. o “Godis not unjust to
forgetany of our work.” This includes the love you show towards Him when
you serve

others. Jesus said, “Assuredly I sayto you, if you give a cup of coldwater, I
will never forgetthe smallestdeed that you do” (Mt. 10:42, paraphrased). •
THE FREEDOM OF KNOWING THAT HE SEES o When we understand
that He sees, then we are not compelled to make sure everyone else sees. The
more I understand that He sees, the less I’m compelledto tell you all that I’m
doing. On the other hand, when I don’t think that He sees, thenI have to
make sure you see. o When we know that He sees, then we don’t have
anything to prove because it’s already being proven before Him. This is such
liberty. It’s a liberating feeling to know that it’s already been proved in the
secretplace. Notjust your private prayer life, but also the secretthings you do
in service have already been manifest to Him. o We don’t have to make sure
everyone knows, because He knows. This gives us power in our spirit. • THE
GREATNESSREFLECTED IN HIS EYES o He sees ourgreatness. The Lord
sees your greatnessfar more than you do. He sees who you are to Him and
what you’re going to be. He sees thatvery clearly right now. o When we see
what He sees,it affects us. He knows our future. He knows where we’re going.
That gives us direction and hope. • THE FIRE OF GOD’S THRONE o God’s
throne is ablaze with fire. Everything around God is ablaze with fire. It’s not
surprising to us that His eyes are full of fire, because it’s all around Him.
There is a river of fire coming out of His throne. There is a sea of glass before
the throne in Revelation4, filled with flaming fire. Seraphim are high-ranking
angels;the word seraphim means “burning ones.” o Jesus’eyes offire are
emphasized three times in the book of Revelation. o God’s fire does two
things. Firstly, it imparts the good, the holy love of God. Secondly, it also
removes that which is unholy, that which hinders love. Therefore, His fire, the
purity in His eyes, imparts the goodand removes the bad. o This isn’t just
figurative that His eyes are like fire. It is part of the reality of His personhood.
restrained and diminished when revealing himself to a human being. So He
can appearto you without His glory being fully manifest, but when His full
glory is being fully revealedHis eyes are like fire. o The Scriptures tell us
often to seek His face, but when we seek His face we encounterHis eyes.
Though in our lives right now we cannot see His face in the direct sense, we
are gazing at His face. I tell you, His eyes are like fire. It is in that posture that
He imparts to us goodthings, the love of God. It is in that posture that He
empowers us to remove the things that hinder love in our life. • THE DESIRE
IN THE FIRE OF HIS EYES o His eyes of fire reveal His desire. In His eyes
of fire there is desire that warms and tenderizes us. In His eyes we understand
that He sees our failure, and this causesus to walk in the fear of God. We also
understand that He sees our longings to love Him.

24.4 Revelation– Eyes Like Blazing Fire
In Luke 11, the words of Jesus are recorded, “No one lights a lamp and puts it
in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Insteadthey put it on its
stand, so that those who come in may see the light. The eye is the lamp of the
body. If your eyes are healthy (generous), your whole body will be full of
light. But if your eyes are unhealthy (stingy), your whole body will be full of
darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore,
if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full
of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
Our eyes are organs that soak in what we chooseto look at. If we fill our
vision with things of this world, with wickednessandlust, with hatred and sin,
then we fill our selves up with darkness.
But the eyes are also a reflectionback to the world of our souls. When our
souls are filled with the spirit, a light shines out from us. A light of joy, a light
of happiness and generosity, ofgiving and of peace.
When we look around us at the world today we see the effects of sin. We see a
living Babylon and lots of darkness. This reminds of the words of Leonard
Sweetin his book AquaChurch 2.0:Piloting your Church in Today’s Fluid
Culture (pg 58)
“Light illumines the darkness. If there’s darkness, the blame should be
attachedwhere it belongs;not to the world that is dark but to the church,
which is failing to provide the light.”
The answerto the darkness in the world is not going to be found in the
darkness. It is only going to be found by the powerof the Holy Spirit within
the called, chosenand faithful followers ofChrist. It is only through shining
that light that darkness is set back.
John notes in our passagetodaythat: Christ’s eyes are like blazing fire.
Let’s reflect that light!

Revelation19:12
His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a
name written on him that no one knows but he himself.
Gill's Notes on the Bible
His eyes were as a flame of fire,.... Which denotes the perspicuity and
penetration of them, the omniscience ofChrist to look into and discoverthe
secretmachinations, schemes, anddevices of his enemies againsthis people,
and his exercise ofit in favour of them, his eyes, like a flame of fire, running to
and fro on their behalf; and also this may signify the fierceness ofhis anger
againstthe enemies of his people, the eyes of his glory being provokedby their
cruelty and wickedness;and likewise the suddenness of their destruction, and
the inevitableness ofit.
And on his head were many crowns;for he has not only a crown, as the
Creatorand Governorof the universe, in right of nature, but he has one
which his Father has put upon his head, when he sethim as King over his holy
hill of Zion, Psalm21:3 and there is another which his mother, the church,
crownedhim with in the day of his espousals, Song ofSolomon3:11 and
besides these, every believer puts a crownon his head, gives him the glory of
their salvation, and all of them casttheir crowns at his feet: to which may be
added, that the crowns ofall the kings of the earth are his; they reign by him,
and are accountable to him. This part of the description may be expressive of
that all power in heaven and earth, given to Christ at his resurrection, and
exercisedby him ever since; and particularly of the extensiveness ofhis
kingdom at the time this vision refers to, when the kingdoms of this world
shall be his, Revelation11:15 for this vision, and the seventh trumpet, are
contemporary; and it may be a symbol of the many victories obtained by him,
and of the lastand closing one that should now be obtained by him.
And he had a name written that no man knew but he himself; which seems to
be his name, the Son of God, as the unknown name of the overcomer, in
Revelation2:17 is a child of God; and the sense is, that his divine nature, in
which he is the Son of God, is incomprehensible, and that the begetting or
generationof him, as such, is ineffable, Proverbs 30:4 and that without a
divine revelation the name itself could not be known; or it could not be known
that God had a Son, and that Christ is he, and bears that name, Matthew
11:27 or else his name Immanuel. The incarnate God may be intended, which
is a secretand wonderful name, and contains in it, without controversy, a
greatmystery, which cannot be comprehended by finite minds; or his name,
,si taht ;"nettirw" eb ot dias si eman sihT .6:9 haiasI,"terces ,lufrednow" ,‫פלא‬
in the Scriptures of truth, in which it is revealedthat Christ is the Son of God,
and Immanuel. In Revelation19:16 the name of King of kings, &c. is said to
be written on his vesture, and on his thigh; and the Ethiopic version makes
this to be written on his crownor diadem, reading the words thus; "and upon
his head a crown, and there was written in his diadem a name, and no man
knew it, but he himself only"; as the high priest had "holiness to the Lord"
written on his mitre. The Syriac version inserts a clause betweenthe two last,
"having names written", and then follows, "and a name written", &c. and so
the Complutensian edition.
Barnes'Notes on the Bible
His eyes were as a flame of fire - See the notes on Revelation1:14.
And on his head were many crowns - Many diadems, indicative of his
universal reign. It is not said how these were worn or arranged on his head -
perhaps the various diadems worn by kings were in some waywreathed into
one.
And he had a name written - That is, probably on the frontlet of this
compound diadem. Compare the notes on Revelation13:1; Revelation14:1.
That no man knew but he himself - See the notes on Revelation2:17. This
cannot here mean that no one could read the name, but the idea is, that no one
but himself could fully understand its import. It involved a depth of meaning,
and a degree of sacredness, and a relation to the Father, which he alone could
apprehend in its true import. This is true of the name here designated - “the
Word of God” - the “Logos” -Λόγος Logosandit is true of all the names
which he bears. See Matthew 11:27. Compare a quotation from Dr. Buchanan
in the Asiatic Researches, vol. 1, vi. p. 264, as quoted by Rosenmuller,
Morgenland, in loco.
Clarke's Notes onthe Bible
His eyes were as a flame of fire - To denote the piercing and all-penetrating
nature of his wisdom.
On his head were many crowns - To denote the multitude of his conquests,
and the extent of his dominion.
A name written, that no man knew - This is a reference to what the rabbins
call the shem hammephorash, or tetragrammaton, ‫הוהי‬ Yhvh ; or what we call
Jehovah. This name the Jews neverattempt to pronounce: when they meet
with it in the Bible, they read ‫ינדא‬ Adonai for it; but, to a man, they all declare
that no man can pronounce it; and that the true pronunciation has been lost,
at leastsince the Babylonish captivity; and that God alone knows its true
interpretation and pronunciation. This, therefore, is the name which no man
knew but he himself.
Revelation1:14 ESV
The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like

Revelation2:18 - John repeats his description of Jesus, saying he has eyes of
fire and feet of brass.
Response:In the Bible darkenedeyes representunseeing (Romans 11:10)so
the symbolism here applies to Jesus'blazing eyes that see everything that may
bring figurative darkness to the congregation.
No evidence exists indicating that the people of Bible times could harden pure
copper by tempering, though they could harden the cutting edge of tools by
cold
hammering. There is evidence that bronze, a copper and tin alloy of between2
to 18 percenttin was available. The modern day version of brass, which is an
alloy of copper and zinc was unknown it Bible times, but the "brass" ofthe
time of the KJV applied to any alloy of copper. Modern translations will
use the term copper. Feetare symbolic in the Bible as representing a persons
inclination; the path one takes as being goodor bad. (Psalm119:101)His feet
are a reminder of his faithfulness when he walkedthe earth. (1 Peter2:21)

Beloved, allow your gaze to be transfixed by the Lion of Judah. Watch as I
relentlesslystare into your eyes, everyintent and motive of your heart
revealed. My eyes blaze with such a depth of love that you cannot draw your
gaze away. Watchas all the barriers come down, all your defences melt away
under my gaze. The intensity of my gaze will clearawayall the lies that have
been spokenover you, not only by others but by yourself.
I will bring healing and restorationinto your innermost being. Allow the tears
to flow for they will bring cleansing and refreshing, as every tear is a prayer
releasedbefore the throne of grace.
Know that I love you too much to leave you where you are!

“His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were
like blazing fire.” (Revelation1:14,)
“I have made you a tester of metals among my people, that you may know and
test their ways. (Jeremiah6:27, ESV)
The conceptof Jesus’s eyes offire mentioned when the apostle John stood
before Him in his vision on the island of Patmos really fascinates me lately.
John was the one who knew Jesus the most intimately of the inner twelve and
the only one who remained to witness His death on the cross when the others
scattered. He often referred to himself as the one Jesus lovedyet in this
moment when Jesus revealedHimself to him, he still fell at his feet as though
dead (Rev 1:17).
Jesus is a tester of our hearts
An assayeris someone who tests metals, including ore, for their components
and judges the value or worth of the metal basedon its purity of composition.
The method is accomplishedby using a combination of intense heat, dry
reagents orfluxes, and specialvessels thathelp separate the precious metals
from the restof the extraneous material, or dross.
King Jesus doesn’tmerely examine our hearts, but He tests and evaluates our
true spiritual condition and then brings His fire to effecta greaterpurity and
usefulness in our lives.
He sees through everything in the same way that fire penetrates metal.
His eyes of fire penetrate to the core reality and the truth of everything that
exists.
He sees everything that is goodand everything that is bad, without any bias or
clouded judgment.
He sees behind the scenesand below the surface.
Nothing in all creationis hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered
and laid bare before the eyes of Him to Whom we must give account(see
Hebrews 4:13).
When the dross is removed from the precious metal, be it goldor silver, then
the vesselis ready to use. When the tree is pruned, it can produce more fruit;
when the wheatis separatedfrom the chaff, then the wheatis ready to use.
John answeredthem all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is
mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. (Luke 3:16)
How many of us in our charismatic circles love that verse? How many
messages andwritings have we heard on this aspectof receiving the Holy
Spirit and being baptized in fire? Let’s not forget to read the next verse:
His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clearhis threshing floor and to gather
the wheatinto his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” (v.
17, emphasis mine)
Jesus desires intimacy with us. He longs for a people who intimately know
Him face to face. But in order to getcloserto Him, those eyes of fire are going
to test the pure motives of our heart and let us know that He is committed to
burning up the chaff in our lives. He will remove the dross, for it’s impossible
to get closerto the heat source without things getting brought to the surface in
our lives and removed.
Mike Bickle states in a messageon this subject and passage:
The more I understand that His eyes are on me, the more I walk in the fear of
God, and, secondly, the stronger or the more mature my intimacy with God is.
So the two practicalapplications are, we grow in the fearof God by the
revelation of His eyes of fire, but we also mature in our intimacy with God.
We see that He sees us; that He feels what we feel;that His eyes are always on
us; that we move His heart. He moves our heart as well. The connectionis the
knowledge ofHis eyes being on us. 1
Jesus is not testing us because He wants to punish us, but the opposite:He
wants to make us better. He wants to purify us, and often times the way he
does it is through trials and tribulations. We must not neglectto understand
the ways of the Lord, as many forgetthat it’s His love for us that allows us to
suffer for times and be prepared for His presence.
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you
sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (James 4:8)
But the word of God also says a fire goes before Him (Psalm 97:3). As we
draw near to Him, the fire touches our lives. It touches our thoughts, it
touches our motives, it purifies our minds. God knows we won’t be ready for
His face when we seek Him, until we’ve been purified by His fire.
For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. (Deuteronomy
4:24)
It was only recently that I noticedfor the first time that this verse in the Old
Testamentmentions God’s jealousyin the same sentence as mentioning that
He’s an all consuming fire. But God’s jealousyis not the same as ours. He’s
not insecure or incapacitatedby immature thoughts in his jealousylike we our
in our idea and conceptof it. His is a jealous love for us. And it’s in our best
interest, out of his love for us, that He brings the winnowing fork to the
threshing floor of our lives.
Jesus tests us with his eyes of fire “…that you may be able to withstand in the
evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Ephesians 6:13).
Purification of the Life of Zion
I’ve recently been re-reading the book The Fire Of DelayedAnswers By Bob
Sorge when I began making my notes for this post. In the first chapter he
brings up the very same passageandconcepts about the eyes of fire as I’d
been planning on writing, but I came across something evenmore interesting
that I best just quote for our purposes:
“Gehenna was a place outside Jerusalemwhere King Josiah, in his godly
reforms destroyedthe altars of idolatry. It became a place where refuse was
burned. It was the city’s incinerator. The purpose of Gehenna was the
purification of the life of the city. In time, Gehenna came to be the name for
the fire of hell. Gehenna (hell) is set ablaze by the holiness of God. Fire
destroys the perishable and perfects that which is imperishable.”
“Unless this holy fire burns within you now, bringing you to purity and peace,
then you will have no escape fromthe fire of Gehenna which consumes
forever.”2
Jesus saidin Mark 9:47 we’d all be salted with fire. Salt is for retaining flavor,
or purifying. Psalm 104:4 states that God makes His ministers a flame of fire,
and Daniel12:10 mentions that “many shall be purified and made white.” If
we’re going to be a people after God’s heart who know Him intimately as ones
who see Him face to face, then there’s no escaping the fire in His eyes!
Intimacy with God will result in righteousness and holiness pervading our
lives. It’s impossible for the fire not to have a purifying effect. To quote Sorge
again:
When hypocrites and the half-hearted candwell in our midst without being
convictedor made uncomfortable, then something’s wrong. God intends for
His fire to so envelope the localchurch that hypocrites will not be able to stay,
and the devout will not be able to remain unchanged.3
When a people after God’s heart are close to Him, it will result in the fire on a
corporate level, and changedlives.
Eyes Like Doves
His eyes are like doves beside streams of water, bathed in milk, sitting beside a
full pool. (Song of Solomon5:12)
As a dove does not have peripheral vision, so is the BelovedJesus – He has
complete singleness ofvision and cannot be distracted by anything that is
unpleasing to his Father. His eyes are loyal to God and to us, His Bride. His
eyes also speak ofHis ability to see and discern everything; he has perfect
insight into every area of our lives and His perspective is absolutely pure.
The phrase “bathed in milk” speaks ofthat which is white and nourishing,
and speaks ofthe Lord’s purity of discernment. This basically speaksofGod’s
ability and greatskill to see perfectlyeverything about our lives, and
interprets everything about our lives through the cleannessofHis own heart
because His motives are always pure. He always knows whatfire to put us
through at what stage of our lives, and preciselyhow much we need.
He’s gentle, yet convicting.
The same Jesus whom all it took was one look at Peterafter he betrayed him
and it cut to the heart and made him run and weepthat he denied the Lord.
Yet, when Jesus restoredhim, this is the same man who boldly proclaimed the
Gospeland 3000 were convertedat Pentecost. The deeperthe piercing of His
eyes, the deeper a work done in our hearts.
Will you look into His eyes of purging and let him see into your heart?

Eyes Like Blazing Fire
In the 'Comet Lemmon' post I mentioned the 'Burning' sensationin my eyes
last night when I beganto cry. [1] Are you experiencing a burning sensation
in your eyes?
While cooking the 'Hot Feta'that the LORD has askedfor, I remembered
that the 'eyes like fire' are mentioned in the book of Revelation. Then he spoke
to me and he said 'Only the goodwill come to you'.
Do you remember the coral teardrop?

Jesus was like blazing fire in his eyes

  • 1. JESUS WAS LIKE BLAZING FIRE IN HIS EYES EDITED BY GLENN PEASE Revelation2:18 18"To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnishedbronze. STUDYLIGHTRESOURCES Albert Barnes'Notes onthe Whole Bible And unto the angel of the church - See the notes on Revelation1:20. These things saith the Son of God - This is the first time, in these epistles, that the name of the speakeris referred to. In eachother instance there is merely some attribute of the Saviour mentioned. Perhaps the severity of the rebuke contemplated here made it proper that there should be a more impressive reference to the authority of the speaker;and hence he is introduced as the “Sonof God.” It is not a reference to him as the “Sonof man “the common appellation which he gave to himself when on earth - for that might have suggestedhis humanity only, and would not have conveyedthe same impression in regard to his authority; but it is to himself as sustaining the rank, and having the authority, of the Sonof God - one who, therefore, has a right to speak, and a right to demand that what he says shall be heard.
  • 2. Who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire - Compare the notes on Revelation 1:14. Before the glance ofhis eye all is light, and nothing can be concealed from his view. Nothing would be better suited to inspire awe then, as nothing should be now, than such a reference to the Sonof God as being able to penetrate the secretrecesses ofthe heart. And his feet are like fine brass - See the notes on Revelation1:15. Perhaps indicative of majesty and glory as he walkedin the midst of the churches. Coffman's Commentaries on the Bible And to the angelof the church in Thyatira write: These things saith the Sonof God, who hath his eyes like a flame of fire, and his feetare like unto burnished brass: THYATIRA Some twenty miles eastof Pergamum on the road to Sardis was Thyatira, a name which means "castle ofThya,"[77]and which is probably retained in the modern Ak-Hissar (white castle), a Turkish town on a fertile plain, being the centerof the cottonindustry, and a relatively important town of 30,156 (1955).[78]In New Testamenttimes, the dye industry was important, Lydia having been from Thyatira (Acts 16:14). It was also the home of many influential trade guilds, having their own deities, temples, and guild halls, where feasts, tending to obscenity, and all kinds of immoralities were practices. Politically, Thyatira was a kind of buffer state betweenPergamum on the westand Seleucus (Syria)on the east, evidently changing hands a number of times betweenthe two states in pre-Christian history.[79]"Apollo the sun god, was the principal deity,"[80] probably leading to the reference to the Sonof Godand the morning star in this message, as a contrast. • 3. [80] A. Plummer, op. cit., p. 64. John Gill's Exposition of the Whole Bible And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write,.... Of the city of Thyatira; see Gill on Revelation1:11; a church was formed here very likely by the Apostle Paul; Lydia was a native of this place, who, and her household were convertedand baptized by him at Philippi, Acts 16:14; though EpiphaniusF21 seems to grant, what some heretics objectedto the authority of this book, that there was no church at Thyatira when this letter was written; however, it is certain, there was one in the "second" century, as the same writer observes, since, as he relates, it was overrun with the Cataphrygian heresy;and in the "fourth" century there was a bishop from Thyatira in the councilof Nice;and even in the "eighth" century there was one Esaias a presbyter, who supplied the place of the bishop of Thyatira in another councilat NiceF23:the Turks have now eight mosques in it, but there is not one Christian church or place of worship to be found in itF24. Who was the angel, or pastorof this church at the writing of this epistle, is not certain; however, it is designedfor all the ministers and churches in the interval this church represents;and this period takes in the darkestand most superstitious times of Popery, until the Reformation. Thyatira is the same as Thygatira, which signifies a "daughter"; and it had its name, as Stephanus Byzantius saysF25,from hence: Seleucus, the sonof Nicanor, being at warwith Lysimachus, and hearing that he had a daughter born, calledthis city Thygatira, which was before calledPelopia, and Semiramis; which is a very fit name for this church, and expresses the effeminacy of it, when the virgin Mary, whom the Romanists callthe daughter of God, was more worshipped than her son; and was not only made a partner with him in the business of salvation, but even set above him; when there were such swarms of monks and friars, and religious orders of severalsorts, as Franciscansand Dominicans, who claimedher as their patroness;when such numbers of them cladthemselves in cowls and long garments, that they looked more like women in hoods and petticoats, than really men; hence also the corrupt part of this church is signified by the womanJezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal the Zidonian; and it should not be forgotthat there was once a she
  • 4. pope, a woman that sat in the papal chair, a whore in a literal sense; wherefore antichrist, or the popes of Rome, are filly called the great whore, the mother of harlots. Mr. Daubuz observes, that the first Christian of Thyatira was a woman, and that the false prophets which first enticed the Christians to apostasyin this church were women, as Maximilia, Quintilia, and Priscilla;to which I would add, that according to Epiphanius, that among those heretics, and which swallowedup this church, their bishops were women, and so were their presbyters, or elders; and Dr. SmithF26 is of opinion, that the inhabitants of this place, when Heathen, were worshippers of the goddess Diana;so that, upon all accounts, the church here was a fit symbol of the effeminate Church of Rome, These things saith the Son of God; he who is truly, properly, naturally, and essentiallythe Son of God: this characterChrist makes use of to asserthis proper deity, as being of the same nature, and having the same perfections with his Father, as well as to command the greaterregard to what he ordered to be written to the churches; and chiefly in opposition to the effeminate state of this church; it was time for him to take to him his highestname, as expressive of his highest nature, and to asserthimself the Son of God, when Mary, his mother according to the flesh, and who was but a mere creature, was calledthe daughter of God, and setupon a level with him, and even preferred unto him: who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire; quick and sharp, and penetrating through the darkness ofthis state;seeing into, discovering, and exposing the horrid actions and wickednessesofmen done in the dark; expressing fury, wrath, and vengeance againstthe Romish antichrist and his followers;and may also designthe light of Gospeldoctrine, which broke out in those times at certain seasons,to the dispelling of Popishdarkness in some measure;see Gill on Revelation1:14, and his feet are like fine brass;in the description of Christ in Revelation1:14; it is added, as if they burned in a furnace; see Gill on Revelation1:14; and may denote the strength, stability, and support Christ gave his people while suffering for his sake, whenin the furnace and burning for him, which kind of death was much used in those times: hence Dr. More, to whom I am much
  • 5. obliged for many hints in this expositionof the epistles to the churches, thinks that Thyatira is an allusion to θυητρια, whichsignify "altars" for the burning of sweetodours;and so may be expressive ofthe burning of the saints, those sweetodours, as they are to Godand Christ, with fire and faggot;which was now practised, as in the other period killing with the swordwas chiefly used; in the midst of which Christ was present, supporting his people, Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible Thyatira — in Lydia, south of Pergamos. Lydia, the purple-seller of this city, having been convertedat Philippi, a Macedoniancity (with which Thyatira, as being a Macedoniancolony, had naturally much intercourse), was probably the instrument of first carrying the Gospelto her native town. John follows the geographicalorderhere, for Thyatira lay a little to the left of the road from Pergamos to Sardis [Strabo, 13:4]. Son of God … eyes like … fire … feet … like fine brass — or “glowing brass” (see on Revelation1:14, Revelation1:15, whence this description is resumed). Again His attributes accordwith His address. The title “Sonof God,” is from Psalm2:7, Psalm2:9, which is referred to in Revelation2:27. The attribute, “eyes like a flame,” etc., answers to Revelation2:23, “I am He which searcheththe reins and hearts.” The attribute, “feetlike … brass,” answers to Revelation2:27, “as the vessels ofa potter shall they be broken to shivers,” He treading them to pieces with His strong feet. Robertson's WordPictures in the New Testament In Thyatira (εν Τυατειροις — en Thuateirois). Some forty miles south-eastof Pergamum, a Lydian city on the edge of Mysia, under Rome since b.c. 190, a centre of trade, especiallyforthe royal purple, home of Lydia of Philippi (Acts 16:14.), shownby inscriptions to be full of trade guilds, Apollo the chief deity with no emperor-worship, centre of activity by the Nicolaitans with their idolatry and licentiousness under a “prophetess” who defied the church there. Ramsaycalls it “WeaknessMade Strong” (op. cit., p. 316).
  • 6. The Son of God (ο υιος του τεου — ho huios tou theou). Here Jesus is representedas calling himself by this title as in John 11:4 and as he affirms on oath in Matthew 26:63. “The Word of God” occurs in Revelation 19:13. His eyes like a flame of fire (τους οπταλμους αυτουως πλογα πυρος — tous ophthalmous autou hōs phloga puros). As in Revelation1:14. His feetlike burnished brass (οι ποδες αυτου ομοιοιχαλκολιβανωι — hoi podes autou homoioi chalkolibanōi). As in Revelation1:15. Vincent's Word Studies Thyatira Situated on the confines of Mysia and Ionia. According to Pliny it was known in earlier times as Pelopia and Euhippia. Its prosperity receiveda new impulse under the Roman Emperor Vespasian. The city containeda number of corporate guilds, as potters, tanners, weavers, robe-makers, anddyers. It was from Thyatira that Lydia the purple-seller of Philippi came, Paul's first European convert. The numerous streams of the adjacentcountry were full of leeches. The principal deity of the city was Apollo, worshipped as the Sun-God under the surname Tyrimnas. A shrine outside the walls was dedicated to Sambatha, a sibyl. The place was never of paramount political importance. Son of God Compare Son of man, Revelation1:13; Psalm2:7; Revelation19:13. Who hath His eyes, etc. See on Revelation1:14, Revelation1:15. Thy works, and the last, etc. Omit and, and read, as Rev., and that thy lastworks are more than the first.
  • 7. Wesley's ExplanatoryNotes And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass; And to the angelof the church at Thyatira — Where the faithful were but a little flock. These things saith the Son of God — See how greathe is, who appeared "like a son of man!" Revelation1:13. Who hath eyes as a flame of fire — "Searching the reins and the heart," verse23. Revelation2:23 And feet like fine brass - Denoting his immense strength. Jobcomprises both these, his wisdom to discern whatever is amiss, and his power to avenge it, in one sentence, Job42:2, "No thought is hidden from him, and he cando all things." James Nisbet's Church Pulpit Commentary THE CHURCH IN THYATIRA ‘And unto the angelof the Church in Thyatira write.’ Revelation2:18 Of the many points in this epistle which we might make the subject-matter of thought, let us take two on which to dwell. I. There is the deep guilt of the Thyatiran prophetess.—Herwickedness was very terrible, and our horror of it is increasedby the appalling factthat it was practisedunder the plea of religious liberty. Can we, however, claim that modern societyis wholly free from a similar tendency? The question brings us to the gates ofwhat is indeed a ‘city of dreadful night,’ into which we need not make our way. But this much some of us may well ask ourselves as we think of the attitude of a certainsectionof the community towards sin of a particular class. Is there no danger of what is really grosslyevil and vicious being let off with easyor even honourable names? It is so easyto plead æsthetic
  • 8. considerations forwhat is in truth little or no better than immorality. It is so plausible to give the sacredtitle of love to relations which are wholly dishonourable. High-sounding excuses forbreaches ofthe marriage-vow rise so quickly to the lips. Whatever the claims of virtue and innocence which have been desertedand sinned against, can we really considerthat guilt of that kind has any right to subsequent consecrationby the customary service in church? Do let us be on our guard againstthinking lust anything but lust, or adultery anything but adultery. Do let us avoid the euphemisms which are sometimes applied to them. Do let us remember the uncompromising verdict of Scripture on these sins. II. There is the reference to the continuous spiritual development of those members of the Church who ‘had not this’ anti-Christian ‘teaching.’—Such development there is in the case ofsome—many—ofus. We know well enough—we are thankful to know—as we watchnot a few of the young lives about us, that they are ‘growing in the grace and knowledge ofour Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.’We know that faults and frailties are being conquered, it may be slowly, it may be rapidly—but at any rate surely. We see their minds and consciences opening to a fuller realisationof the meaning of the gospel. We are sure that their hearts are being lifted up to the Lord on high. We are confident that their thoughts are being setwith ever-increasing earnestnessand sincerity on the things that are above. There are lives which are characterisedthroughout by religious and moral advance. It is true of them also that their ‘last works are more than the first.’ There are those who become less and less unworthy servants. They do the work entrusted to them; and in response Godsends them further, more important, more arduous tasks—tasks whichmake greaterdemands upon their powers, their self- devotion, their faith, their resolve;so that their ministry, their usefulness, their ‘works’increase yearby year. III. ‘He that overcometh, and he that keepethMy works unto the end.’—It is the old summons to effort and fidelity. It is accompaniedby the old promise of endless rewardto those who are victorious in the supreme contest. The Kingdom of Christ will at length be establishedin universal and unquestionable supremacy. Yes, it is coming. Dayby day it is approaching nearer. It will in the end be manifested to quick and dead. We may be worthy
  • 9. or unworthy of it. Woe indeed to those who are not written in the Lamb’s Book ofLife. For us also is the warning, ‘All the Churches shall know that I am He Which searcheththe reins and hearts:and I will give unto eachone of you according to your works.’For us also is the splendid promise, ‘And he that overcometh, and he that keepethMy works unto the end, to him will I give authority over the nations … and I will give him the morning star.’ —Rev. the Hon. W. E. Bowen. Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible Revelation2:18. Church in Thyatira— Thyatira was situatedat a distance of about 48 miles to the south-eastofPergamos. See Acts 16:14. At present the city is calledby the Turks Akhisar, or "The white castle," fromthe great quantities of white marble there. Only one ancient edifice is left standing; the rest, even the churches, are so destroyed, that no vestiges ofthem are to be found. The principal inhabitants are Turks, who have here eight mosques, while not so much as one Christian church is still remaining. So terribly have the divine judgments been poured upon this church for its abominations! Expository Notes with PracticalObservations onthe New Testament The next epistle is directed by Christ, and written by St. John, to the church of Thyatira; in which epistle observe, 1. The name given to Christ, he is styled the Son of God; that is, by eternal generation, being the only-begottenof the Father, as well as begotten of the Fatheronly; and partaker of the Father's essence, as wellas of his likeness:he is here calledthe Son of God, as being a distinct person from the Father; yet is he the first and the last, which denotes his eternity; and who is, and who was, and is to come, the Almighty, which are essentialattributes of the Godhead. Observe, 2. The description here given of Christ, His eyes like flaming fire, and his feet like burning brass:denoting thereby his piercing and discerning
  • 10. sight to see and observe his enemies, his fiery indignation, and fierce wrath, ready to take hold of them, and his irresistible power and strength to vanquish and tread them under his feet. Observe, 3. The greatand specialcommendation which Christ gives to this church: greatly she is commended for her charity to Christians in distress; for her service in ministering to them, and in comforting of them; for her faith and constantadherence to the professionof Christianity; and for her patience under persecutions for the gospel's sake;but her specialand peculiar commendation was this, that her lastworks were more than her first; that is, her lastworks were better, did exceedand excelthe first. Ephesus was best at first, and worst at last; but Thyatira's last works were best. It is a blessed thing when Christians grow in goodness, increase in faith and holiness, when their last days are their best days; their last works, and their last fruit, their best, their fairestfruit. Observe, 4. The reprehension follows the commendation; as goodas Thyatira was, she needed to be better. She was remiss and negligentin her duty of reproving, censuring, excommunicating vile seducers, the Gnostics, and Nicolaitans, the disciples of Simon Magus, and his lewd Helena, as some think; compared to Jezebel, becauseshe enticedAhab to worship Baal, as this woman, (whosoevershe was,)calling herself a prophetess, and teaching the lawfulness of fornication, and eating things offered to idols. Some observe, That there was scarce anyheresybroached, but it had some woman or other for the propagatorand promoter of it, who took upon them the name of prophetesses.Simon Magus had his Helena; Montanus had his Priscilla and Maximilla; Carpocrateshis Marcellina. Concerning this person it is affirmed, that God gave her space to repent, but she repented not. Learn thence, That greatis the sin, folly, and danger, of deferring and putting off the duty of repentance, when God gives time and space sufficientto perform it. 1. Greatis the sin, because it is a mocking of God's patience, and undervaluing of his service, a contempt of his authority, a presuming on his goodness,a defiance of his displeasure.
  • 11. 2. Greatis the folly, as wellas the sin of it, because we put it off to the most improper and unfitting season, andbecause we hereby make the work more hard and difficult, in what seasonsoeverwe setabout it; and the longerwe delay our repentance, the more work shall we make for repentance. 3. As greatis the danger as either the sin or folly, because it puts a person upon a mighty hazard; he runs a desperate venture, not knowing whether he shall live an hour longer; and because we forfeitby our delays that special grace, without the assistancewhereofwe cannever repent. Observe, 5. How severelyGod threatens Jezebelhere, and in her all sinners, to whom he gives space for repentance, but it is not improved for that end: I will casther into a bed of tribulation and torment, instead of her bed of lust and uncleanness, unless she repent. Behold here how greatand immeasurable the patience of God is towards the greatest, the vilest, and the worstsinner; they have space for repentance, they have invitations to repent, they have judgments threatenedto prevent their final impenitence: but if they prove incorrigible and unreclaimable, nothing is to be expectedbut approaching ruin: I will kill her children with death; that is, such as are seducedby her suffer with her, if judgments threatened be not by repentance prevented. Observe lastly, The end and design of Christ in bringing upon vile sinners these exemplary punishments, namely, to declare his omniciency, power, and justice: All the churches shall know that I am he that searcheththe reins and hearts: that is, all the churches in and about Thyatira, says Christ, shall know that I not only observe outward acts, but take notice of the secretcounsels, motions, and designs, of men's hearts, and will judge every man according to his works:a full and cleartext to prove the divinity of Christ: he that searchethmen's hearts, and renders to all men according to their works, is God; but Christ doth both, and therefore is essentiallyand truly God. Heinrich Meyer's Critical and ExegeticalCommentaryon the New Testament Revelation2:18. ὁ ὑιὸς τοῦ θεοῦ. But in the present epistle he expresslydesignates himselfas such, because, especiallyin Revelation2:27, this glory of his is assertedin accordance withPsalms 2. The two other designations, derived from Revelation1:14-15, have their significance in the fact that the Lord with his eyes of flame penetrates(1216) all, and with his feet like brass treads down every thing impure and malevolent.(1217) Johann Albrecht Bengel's Gnomonof the New Testament Revelation2:18. τῆς ἐν θυατείροις ἐκκλησίας)The Alex. cod., and also Tertullian, read τῷ ἐν θυατίροις, without the addition of the word ἐκκλησίας.(36)Where the angels of the sevenchurches are mentioned together, ch. Revelation1:20, the name of the church at Thyatira is not excepted. Now, where the series comes separatelyto the angelin Thyatira, the omissionof the word church (for some in ancient times said that there was no church there at that time) certainly agrees with the small number of Christians in that town. An address is made to them separatelyin Revelation 2:24. Among the Hebrews, ten persons at leastwere required to constitute a holy assembly:again, when there were seventeenChristians at Neocæsarea, Gregorywas given to them as bishop. Therefore the flock at Thyatira might have been small and unknown, which could scarcelysupport the name of a church, and yet had an angel. St Carpus is reported to have been here. Thyatira—From the renowned capital, Pergamos,to the still more renowned Sardis, our apostle would find a strait south-easternRomanroad: he would be obliged to turn a little aside to the eastto the lessertownof Thyatira. When Alexander the Greatdrove the Persianpowerout of Ionia, he and his successorsplanted therein a number of cities, filling them with inhabitants from his ownMacedonia. Ofthese cities one was Thyatira. This city was filled with a number of industrial classesorguilds, namely: bakers, potters, weavers, tanners, dyers, etc. Hence “Lydia of Thyatira” was found at Philippi, Macedonia, by Paul, and she became the first EuropeanChristian convert. She was “a seller of purple,” probably the cloth, the “imperial

She bore the name of her native province, for Lydia was no doubt her proper name. Altogether Luke’s narrative places her as a gracefulfigure in early Christian history. How vivid the contrastbetweenLydia of Thyatira and Jezebelof Thyatira! It is curious to note that the American missionary, Brewer, in 1831, found the guild of dyers still working at the occupationin Thyatira. It was never a greatcity, but a thrifty manufacturing town. The modern town is said by Svoboda (The SevenChurches of Asia, 1869)to contain 15,000inhabitants, of whom two thirds are Turks, one third Greek Christians, with a few Armenians. He adds, “The whole trade is in the hands of the Christian population, as it generallyis throughout the East, the Christians comprising the most industrious and intelligent part of the population.” Son of God—St. John had identified him as son of man in remembrance of the human humiliation in which he once had knownhim, he here identifies himself as that same son in his glorification. The promises at close ofthis epistle are takenfrom the secondpsalm, in which that sonship is described in its power. Eyes… feet—Quotedfrom St. John’s picture of him, Revelation1:14-15. PeterPett's Commentary on the Bible The Letter To The Church In Thyatira (Revelation2:18-29). ‘And to the angelof the church in Thyatira, write, These things says the Son of God, who has his eyes like a flame of fire, and his feetare like burnished brass.’ The fact that these descriptions of the Son of Man are used in relation to Thyatira confirms that they contain the ideas of discerning judgment, powerful eyes that burn into the heart, and powerful feet that tread down evil. (See for eyes Psalms 11:4-6; Proverbs 15:3; Proverbs 20:8; Isaiah 1:16; Jeremiah5:3; Jeremiah16:17; Jeremiah32:19; Zechariah12:4 and for feet

It lay about45 miles to the southeastofPergamum. It was famous for its textiles, especiallythe production of purple dye (cf. Acts 16:14), and its trade guilds. Flame-like eyes suggestdiscerning and severe judgment (cf. Revelation1:14). Burnished (highly reflective) bronze feetin this context picture a warrior with protectedfeet (cf. Revelation1:15; Daniel 10:6). "Sonof God" emphasizes Jesus Christ"s deity and right to judge. This is the only use of this title in Revelation, though it is practically equivalent to "Messiah" (cf. Psalm2:12; Luke 4:41; John 1:34; John 1:49; John 3:18; John 5:25; John 10:36; John 11:4; John 11:27; John 20:31). The main localgod in Thyatira was Tyrimnas who, his worshippers said, was a sonof the gods. They pictured him on the city coins as a warrior riding a horse and wielding a double-edgedbattle ax in judgment. Schaff's Popular Commentary on the New Testament Revelation2:18. • 16. concernus at present, that Thyatira was famous for its purple or scarletdyes. The sun-god was the leading objectof worship to the heathen inhabitants of the city; and it has been thought that there is thus a peculiar propriety in the light in which Jesus presents Himself to its church, as One whose ‘eyes are as a flame of fire.’ For the description now given of Himself by the great Head of the Church, cp. chap. Revelation1:14-15. The most remarkable part of it is that in which He designates Himself the Son of God. It was as One ‘like unto a Son of man’ that He had been beheld by the Seerin chap. Revelation1:13, although that description was in no degree intended to exclude the thought of His essentialDivinity. He was really the Sonof Godlike unto a son of man. Now, however, the Divine aspectofHis personis brought prominently forward, yet not simply because in this Epistle He is to speak ofexecuting judgment, for He both executes judgment in other Epistles, and He does so as Son of man (John 5:27; see note there), but because Divine Sonship is part of that constitution of His personupon which it becomes the Church constantly to dwell. Perhaps also the distinct phase of the Church upon which we enter in the secondgroup of these Epistles may explain the prominence given to the thought of the ‘Son of God.’ She has been hitherto regardedin what she is. She is now to be lookedat in her struggle with the world (see remarks at close of the sevenEpistles);let her learn that ‘God is on her side.’ The Expositor's Greek Testament Revelation2:18. χαλκολιβ. Only one ancient edifice is left standing: the rest, even the churches, are so destroyed, that no vestiges ofthem are to be found. The principal inhabitants are Turks, who have here eight mosques. So terribly have the divine judgments, denounced in this letter, been poured upon this church!” “Akhizar, the ancientThyatira,” observes the Rev. H. Lindsay, “is said to contain about thirty thousand inhabitants; of whom three thousand are Christians, all Greeks, exceptabout two hundred Armenians. There is, however, but one Greek church and one Armenian. The superior of the Greek church, to whom I presentedthe Romaic Testament, esteemedit so greata treasure that he earnestlypressedme, if possible, to spare another, that one might be securedto the church, and be free from accidents, while the other went round among the people for their private reading. Job comprises both these particulars, namely, his wisdom to discern whateveris amiss, and his powerto avenge it, in one sentence, (Job42:2,)saying, No thought is hidden from him, and he can do all things. Or the latter emblem, his feet being like fine brass, may signify that all his ways are gloriously just and holy. John follows the geographicalorder;for Thyatira lay a little to the left of the road from Pergamos to Sardis (Strabo, 13:, 4). Son of God ... eyes like ... fire ... feet are like fine brass - or 'glowing brass' (resumed from Revelation1:14-15). Again, His attributes accordwith His address. "Sonof God" is, from Psalms 2:7; Psalms 2:9, referred to in Revelation2:27. 'Eyes like flame,' etc., answers to Revelation2:23, "I am He which searcheththe reins and hearts." "Feetare like fine brass" answers to Revelation2:27, "as the vesselsofa potter shall they be broken to shivers," He treading them to pieces. Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers (18) Thyatira was situated betweenPergamos andSardis, a little off the main road which connectedthese two cities. It was a Macedoniancolony, founded by Alexander the Greatafter the overthrow of the Persianempire. The Macedoniancolonists appearto have introduced the worship of Apollo, honoured as the Sun-god, under the name of Tyrimnas. It has been thought by some that the descriptionhere given of Christ—“the eyes of flame”—was selectedin allusion to this worship of the Sun-god, under the form of some dazzlingly ornamented image. Certainly close commercialintercourse connectedthe daughter colony with its mother city. There seemto have been various mercantile guilds in the colony—bakers, potters, tanners, weavers, and dyers. The dye-trade was, perhaps, the most important. Lydia, the seller of purple, was in all likelihoodconnectedwith the guild of dyers; and her appearance in Philippi is an illustration of the trade relations of Macedonia and Thyatira. To her the Christian community at Thyatira may have owedits beginning. “She who had gone forth for a while, to buy and sell, and get gain, when she returned home may have brought home with her richer merchandise than any she had lookedto obtain” (Trench). The population was of a mixed character, and included, besides Asiatics, Macedonians, Italians, and Chaldeans. The messagewhichis sent to the Christians dwelling

The “eyes offlame” will searchthe reins and the hearts (Revelation2:23); the “feetof fine brass” will tread down the enemies, and smooth the path before them, who will have powerover the nations. • 20. DISTINCTIVE FEATURES. Revelation2:18. — "To the angelof the Church in Thyatira write: These things says the Son of God, He that hath His eyes as a flame of fire, and His feet are like fine brass." This is the only Church of the seven in which a woman's name is mentioned. Jezebel, the wickedconsortof the apostate king of Israel, who was but a toolin her hands, the upholder and patroness of the worstforms of idolatry, a murderess, yet withal a cleverand determined woman, is the prominent personnamed in the address to the angel. We cannot regard it as a mere coincidence that the earlier mention of Thyatira is in connectionwith a woman (Acts 16:1-40), but a very different characterto the one named here. There are striking points both of contrastand resemblance betweenLydia, the active, generous, decidedChristian, and her relation to Paul (Acts 16:1-40), and Jezebel, the zealous and equally large-heartedpagan, and her relation to Elijah (1 Kings 18:1-46;1 Kings 19:1-21). This fourth epistle is the longestof the seven, and marks the commencement of the secondgroup in which the history of eachChurch runs on till the secondComing of the Lord. The first direct reference in these epistles to the secondAdvent is found here (vv. 25-28). The hopeless, helpless, corrupt condition of the Church — a condition out of which it cannot emerge, and one incapable of improvement, is another noted feature, distinguishing it thus from the three previous churches. Here, then, is an active propagationof evil and corrupting teaching from within. Pergamos toleratedcertain grave evils; but Thyatira suffers them to be taught, and herself becomes the mother of similar evil systems, "herchildren." What a truly remarkable feature of this Church! Another noticeable characteristic is that a remnant is now formally recognisedand separatelyaddressed(v. 24), thus clearlydistinguishing the Church or mass from the remnant or faithful company. Further, the call to hear which in Ephesus, Smyrna, and Pergamos precedes the promises to the overcomer, in Thyatira and succeeding churches is found after the promises, closing up in eachcase the respective address. In the first three epistles the Church stands related to the call to hear, whereas in the last
  • 21. four the overcomers are in relation to the words, "He that hath an ear, let him hear." Another striking feature in the address to this Church is that for the first and only time, in the course of these epistles, the name of the divine Speakeris introduced — the Son of God; this title of personaland divine relationship is not used in any other part of the Apocalypse. THE DIVINE SPEAKER. 18. — "These things says the Son of God." The humanity of the Lord and His relation to the race are conveyedin the title "Sonof Man." The Deity of the Lord and His relationto God are intimated in the title "Sonof God." His glory and relation to the churches as beheld by John was as "Sonof Man" (Revelation1:13). Why, then, is this divine title "Sonof God" introduced, and only here? The answeris at hand. Thyatira historically covers the Dark or Middle Ages, and pictures in brief terms and symbols the popish system, the worstbearing the Christian name that has ever disgracedthe earth. In popery every true thought of the Church is lost. True, she boasts loudly of unity, but it is a unity enforced when and where she canby the potent arguments of the faggot, the fire, and the dungeon — as unlike divine unity effectedby the Holy Ghost(1 Corinthians 12:13)as light is to darkness. Poperyshuts out Christ completely as Head of His Body, the Church, and as Administrator of the House of God. Hence the introduction of this title in the opening words of the address. NotPeter, but Christ, the Sonof the living God, is the Church's foundation (Matthew 16:16-18). Peter, too, is made the administrator of the Church instead of Christ. But the Lord never gives up His rights, and just when and where it were most needful to insist on His divine prerogative as Son of God it is done. If the Church has been drifting from bad to worse, so much the more need to insist on the divine glory and relationship of our Lord. If that goes, then truly all is lost. The title "Sonof God" is in no wise a dispensationalone; a title, moreover, which was given to Him on His entrance into this world as Man (Psalms 2:1-12; Acts 13:33, omit the word "again"). HIS EYES AND FEET.
  • 22. 18. — "He that hath His eyes as a flame of fire and His feet like fine brass." This is part of the detailed description of the glorified Sonof Man previously beheld (Revelation1:14-15). Here, however, these two attributes of stern sovereigntyare exercisedby the Son of God. It is wellto remember that He to Whom all judgment is committed, and Who will infallibly execute His own judgment, is not only Man (John 5:22; John 5:27), but He is God as well. He who wields the sceptre is divine as well as human. His eyes as "a flame of fire" refer to His moral intolerance of evil. He will searchout sin and discover it howeverhidden. Who or what can escapethose eyes as a flame of fire? "His feet as fine brass." WhatHis eyes discover, that His feet shall tread upon. Unbending judicial action, inflexible justice, is symbolisedby the "feetlike fine brass." Everysystematisedform of evil bearing the Christian name (v. 23) must be destroyed. The mountains of Edom in the last days afford an awful example of divine vengeance andof the application of the striking symbol here employed (Isaiah 63:1-6). When the Lord comes in Personto make goodHis sovereignright over the whole scene under Heaven His feet are likened to "pillars of fire" (Revelation10:1-2), a slight change in the wording of the imagery, implying the immovable, steadfastpurpose and actof the Lord in the stern assertionof His universal rights. "Fire" is the expressive symbol of judgment, whether upon Christ, the sacrifice (Lev. l), or upon the wicked(Mark 9:43; Luke 16:24;2 Thessalonians 1:8). E.M. Zerr's Commentary on SelectedBooksofthe New Testament See comments at Revelation1:20 for the explanation of the angel. In this letter the author states his personalname before giving a description of himself and it is the Son of God. Comparing His eyes and feetto fire and brass is explained at Revelation1:14-15. Thyatira was a city which lay on the borders of the regions of Lydia and Mysia, opposite unto Macedonia, andsouthwards of Pergamos,in Asia the less, where Lydia was born, whom Paul converted at Philippi { Acts 16:13-14} in which city this church was planted. The three predicates form the ground at once of the threatening and of the promise. The prophet shows those, who from fear of the powerof heathenism were weak towards the Nicolaitans oreven inclined to go along with them, one whom they ought much more to fear, and who cangive both victory and glory. The first predicate itself exhibits a terrible character. Forin the passage, whichforms the foundation for this name of Christ, he appears as one who smites the heathen with an iron sceptre and dashes them in pieces as a potter's vessel. The flame of fire does not bring to light, as Bengelfalselyinterprets here, but consumes. Bengelremarks on the feetas of clearbrass:"It threatens secure persons who think they can do what they please, and when impiety in them rises to the highest pitch, they tread the Son of God under foot. Thyatira is first know to us as a Seleucidcolony, whose foundation is ascribedto Seleucus Nicatorat the time of his warwith Lysimachus. . . . The increasing abundance of later inscriptions suggeststhat Thyatira, still of limited importance at the time of the Revelation, reacheda peak of prosperity in the secondand third centuries. The words of Rev. Rev. 2:19+ were addressedto a growing church in a growing city.3 The most outstanding feature in Thyatiran life was probably the institution of trade-guilds. . . . At Thyatira there were guilds of bakers, potters, workers in brass, tanners, leather-cutters, workers in wooland flax, clothiers, dyers; the workers in wooland the dyers were probably the most numerous, for the manufacture and dyeing of woollengoods was a Lydian speciality, in which Thyatira excelled.4 Not surprisingly, religionplayed no major role in Thyatira’s wayof life, for it was not a major centerof Caesarworshipor Greek worship; its localgod was

The only notable thing about Thyatira religiouslywas that it was home to the oracle Sambethe, an oracle presidedover by a female fortune teller.5 This church may have been establishedfrom Paul’s ministry to Lydia (Acts Acts 16:14). “At the riverside at Philippa Lydia, a sellerof purple of Thyatira became the first recordedChristian convert in Macedonia (Acts Acts 16:14).”6 Thyatira was famous for a purple or crimson dye manufactured from the madder root, which was a cheaprival for the expensive Phoenicianmurex dye made from a particular marine shellfish. Acts Acts 16:14 attests to this specialty, for the Philippian convert, Lydia, was a sellerof purple fabrics who hailed from Thyatira (she was 300 miles from her home city).7 Son of God Frequent allusions to PsalmPs. 2:1 in the letter to Thyatira underscore both the judgment of Jezebeland her children (Rev. We might say anger, or at leastSOFTEN the angerA BIT, and say "RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION." Eyes full of FIRE are NOT COMFORTING. One look at an expressionsuch as that, and we’d desire to run and hide. John fainted. (Revelation1:17) Throughout the scripture, fire is used as a symbol of JUDGMENT. (Here we go with that JUDGMENT idea again.) When Jesus appears in a vision, which demonstrates His RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT, itfits THE CHARACTER of Revelation’s prophecy, which shows God, and His Son Jesus, in a variety of upcoming JUDGMENTS. In Genesis 19:24, FIRE is used to bring JUDGMENT uponSodom and Gomorrah. In Exodus 9:24, a JUDGMENT fellupon Egypt--this time, hail which was mingled with FIRE. In Ezekiel21:31, the WRATH of the Lord is describedas a FIRE--“Iwill blow againstyou in the FIRE OF MY WRATH." In Ezekiel38, verses 19 and 22 (which show the RESULTS of the Gog/Magog invasion upon Israel), God is saidto actin “My jealousyand in the FIRE OF MY WRATH." AND when God destroys the invading armies, He will do so with pestilence and blood, with overflowing rain, and great hailstones, FIRE and BRIMSTONE. In our modern world, we EMPHASIZE how God is LOVE and MERCY--and INDEED Godis just that. In our Christian era of the CHURCH, we live under the shelter of God’s GRACE--His free GIFT to mankind through Jesus’death and resurrection. We have the opportunity to respond to God’s abounding and PERFECT LOVE--His AGAPE love, His UNCONDITIONAL
  • 28. LOVE--the LOVE which LOVES because LOVE IS GOD’S NATURE AND CORE, and a LOVE which He gives to ALL--without condition. (If we will acceptit!) But this is ONLY ONE SIDE of our Lord! He deals in JUDGMENT, too. There are many people who believe the GOD of the OLD TESTAMENTwas a harsh, judgmental, jealous, and unapproachable God, and that it was ONLY in the OLD TESTAMENTthat God actedthat way. This assumption is NOT true. God exercisedGRACE, MERCY, PATIENCE, LONGSUFFERING and LOVE in the Old Testament, and MANY CHAPTERS AND VERSES make this clear. GRACE was demonstratedto Abraham, Noah, Moses,King David- -a LONG LIST of Old Testament saints. These Old Testamentsaints HEARD the GOSPEL(the GOOD NEWS)that God would send a SAVIOR. Without SEEING Jesus--His life, ministry, death and resurrection--these Old Testamentpeople BELIEVED God’s PROMISE, andthey received SALVATION, by believing in the FUTURE sacrifice of God’s Son. (We in the Church have an EASIER wayto believe, CALL IT 20/20 HINDSIGHT. We can look BACK upon Jesus’work, which is ALREADY accomplishedfor us. IF WE WILL BELIEVE! You could say that we are WITHOUT EXCUSE!) ANOTHER FACT--The Old Testamentis NOT the ONLY place in scripture where we read about God’s JUDGMENTfalling! In the earliestdays of a YOUNG CHURCH, in Acts 5:1-11, JUDGMENT IMMEDIATELYFELL upon Ananias and Sapphira, BECAUSE they CONSPIRED TO LIE to the Holy Spirit. When confronted about their LIES, they FELL DEAD on the spot! And GREAT FEAR came upon ALL the church.
  • 29. When we delve further into our study of the book of Revelation, we’llsee Jesus dealing in JUDGMENT to part of the SEVEN CHURCHES. He wields a sharp two-edgedswordin the letter to the Church of Pergamos. His EYES OF FIRE are viewed AGAIN (plus He’s got feetlike fine burnished hot brass) in the letter to the Church of Thyatira. In Laodecia, we see Him nauseated, spewing that Church out of His mouth. All these are pictures of JUDGMENTS. Throughout Revelation6 to 19, we read of JUDGMENT afterJUDGMENT. Four horsemen of the Apocalypse. Falling stars. Earthquakes. Pestilences. Darkness. A scorching sun. Hideous locusts (evil angels). Evil spirits like frogs. Black smoke fromthe bottomless pit full of scorpion-like devils. Wars, violence and bloodshed. Destructionof Mystery Babylon. Then FINALLY, at last, after all the distressing WOES, JUDGMENTwill fall upon the armies gatheredat Armageddon. God’s WRATH reaches its CLIMAX--cleansing the world so that Jesus cansetup His PERFECT governmentof peace! These elements of JUDGMENT are so different from the meek, polite, gentle, loving Jesus that many of us learned about in Sunday School. Certainly, Jesus is ALL those goodand pleasantthings (and we’d never frighten children by telling them of judgment). But the TRUTH IS THIS--Jesus BRINGS the JUDGMENTSof God, as He opens a certain seven-sealedscrollin Revelation6. His eyes FLASH with BLAZING FIRE, a FLAME of FIRE, as He drives out the enemies and orchestratesGod’s JUDGMENTS. His ANGER FALLS upon SIN, upon SATAN, upon ANTICHRIST and the FALSE PROPHET, upon MYSTERY BABYLON, upon WICKED ARMIES and HEATHEN NATIONS, upon ALL that is EVIL.
  • 30. His angerNEVER FALLS upon His redeemedpeople. Instead, His ANGER and JUDGMENTSSAVE His people, and ALL OF CREATION, the EARTH! In Matthew 24:22, Jesus said, “Exceptthose days be shortened, there should be NO FLESH SAVED: but for THE ELECT’S SAKE, those days shall be shortened.” Evil would TOTALLY DESTROYthe earth. But, PRAISE JESUS, His JUDGMENTSwill SAVE the creation! The EYES of Jesus, as wellas BURNING with THE FIRE of His INDIGNATION, are PURE EYES. They CANNOT behold EVIL. “Thou art of PURER EYES than to behold evil, and CANST NOT look upon iniquity…” Habbakuk 1:13. The EYES of Jesus SEE and KNOW all things. Eyes of FIRE penetrate; they see right INTO the MINDS and HEARTS of people. It’s impossible to HIDE from His PENETRATING eyes ofFIRE. “Neitheris there any creature that is NOT manifest in His sight: but ALL THINGS are nakedand open unto the EYES of Him with Whom we have to do.” Hebrews 4:13. Truly, the EYES of our Lord BURN DEEP into the INNERMOST being of anyone who belongs to Jesus--He cansee our MOTIVES, our THOUGHTS, our VERY CORE. This is WHY it’s of UTMOST IMPORTANCE thatwe CONFESSoursins and shortcomings as soonas we are aware of them. When the EYES of Jesus, with His FLAME of FIRE penetrates, let us be found BLAMELESS and SPOTLESS, throughour repentance.
  • 31. Those EYES of BLAZING FIRE will SCORCHinto the innermost being of anyone who is unrighteous--within those who have rejectedHim. These people will have NO EXCUSE before the EYES of the Almighty Lord. Think of a dad, arms crossedoverhis chest, foottapping on the floor, as he glowers AT YOU, the disobedient child. Think of the meanestteacherduring your elementary schooldays, pacing the floor in front of the blackboard, slapping a ruler againsther palm as she glares straightat you. How did you feel? Like squirming? Like crawling under a table or desk? But you had nowhere to hide; you knew you were caught, and GUILTY. And the PUNISHMENT was coming! Then apply this idea to the FIERY EYES of Jesus. It’s very unsettling to have a PURE PERSONstare atus steadily, especiallyif we’re harboring some secretimpurity in our lives. While the eyes of Jesus will most certainly glow with love and compassion, theyalso FLASH with the INTENSITYof His RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT. We don’t have to be CAUGHT needing REBUKE, or evenworse, suffer JUDGMENT. Atall times, we’re JUST A PRAYER AWAY from being CLEANSED, BEING FORGIVEN andRESTORED to a PERFECT guilt-free FELLOWSHIP with our Lord. Have you committed some sin? Thenconfess it, be forgiven and cleansed from all unrighteousness. Have you NEVER askedJesus to be your SAVIOR and LORD. There’s no better time to do so than NOW. Do it. Confess your rebellion againstGod, then ask for forgiveness, andinvite Jesus to come live inside your heart. He

The Lord says in Hosea 4:6, My people are destroyedfrom a lack of knowledge. We are told over and over again throughout scripture to grow in the knowledge ofChrist. We know that the enemy roams about like a roaring lion seeking those to whom he candevour. He does this often by presenting counterfeits. He promotes these various forms of defilement in popular culture throughout the generations of humankind. We unknowingly wearclothing, jewelry, decorate our homes, and entertain idols –exalting the ancient beliefs of false religions and opening

There is truly nothing new UNDER the sun and when we begin to realize the newesttrend is often the oldestspirit looking to find a gatewayinto our souls we will quickly shut the door – if we have discernment that is. One of the symbols that is continuing to grow in popularity is the “evil eye”, also knownas an amulet to ward off the evil eye. I think this is the epitome of what Jesus means when he says in Mark 3:23, How can Satandrive out Satan? The world has come up with more witchcraft to ward off witchcraft. It’s absolute insanity. These “eyes” come in many forms. In Hinduism, you may be familiar with the eye that’s drawn in the palm of a right hand. It’s known as a hamsa. Or, perhaps you’ve seenthe Egyptian eye, the Godof Ra, the bold black outlining of an eye with a curled line from its corner, to symbolize a teartrack. I remember drawing this eye as a child, but had no idea why or even where it came from. I was drawn to its art form. Surely, you’ve noticedthe eye that has stamped itself on the back of our one dollar bill. It sits above a pyramid. This eye many say, stems from a Masonic symbol. Or what about the eyes of Mona Lisa? Mona Lisa’s eyes themselves have found their way into best selling novels, they’re the primary focus of every art textbook, and they are still discussedon history channels. Why are these various forms of eyes so popular throughout history and within our culture today? Why do so many idolize them? The devil is constantly looking for open doorways into a person’s heart to take up residence. One of the tools he uses is worldly culture, society, history, philosophy, fashion, and the entertainment industry as a way to captivate his audience. The evil eye, although it has takenon many forms is the same thing. It’s an evil agenda, a counterfeit, to the truth. We read in 2 Corinthians 4:4 that the god of this age (the devil) has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so they cannot see the glory of Christ. We also read in Ephesians 2:2 how the devil is the prince of the air and his spirit is at work in those who are disobedient. Essentially, the less we have of the world in us, the greaterwe will see the light of the gospelof Christ and discern the counterfeits. In this, we can drive out darkness by the Spirit of God.
  • 34. I remember in one of my college counseling classesmy professorencouraged us to look in people’s eyes. She said in this, we could gatherinformation about how the personfelt, what they needed, and how they were suffering. Beyond looking into client’s eyes, she also encouragedus to look into the textbook’s psychologist’s eyes. She would ask us to infer their history based upon their eyes. At this time I believed this offered unusual insight, but today I see this as witchcraft. The problem with this is that we were not drawing upon the Spirit of the Lord to discern the intents of a person or their hurt, but instead we were drawing upon our own selves and our interpretations. In an extreme way, what she askedus to do reminds me of hypnotism. The Word speaks aboutthe eyes of God. These eyes are holy eyes, righteous eyes, and perfect eyes. They do not stray from the one they love. They do not manipulate, nor deceive. They do not mock, nor are they haughty. In revelation we read that Jesus’eyes are like blazing fire. As we look upon Christ, we should not only see his affectionfor us, but His desire to purify us. We should see His passionto burn awaythose things that are not good for us. Those things that are counterfeit to who He is as our God. In Jeremiah 6:27 The Lord tells Jeremiahthat He has made him a testerof metals and the people the ore, so Jeremiahmay observe and testtheir ways (Jer 6:27). Jeremiahwas an assayer. This was a picture of Jesus Christ being our ultimate assayer. An assayeris someone who analyzes an alloy to determine the amount of gold, silver, or other metal in it. Jesus Christ is not only examining our hearts, but is testing us to see if we will act according to the intents of our heart. He allows circumstancesand events to pressure us, so that He may see what comes forth. Is it stubble, or is it precious metal? If stubble, it shall be burned in the eyes of Christ. Yet, without His eyes, the stubble will remain. We must surrender to the eyes of Christ. And, welcome His process, knowing He sees the precious metal inside of us. I believe that as the darkness grows darker, God’s FIRE is increasing. I believe, we as the body of Christ, have entered into a seasonwhere God is increasing his GAZE upon us. We may see the tactics and pit-stops of the enemy, but if we turn our focus awayand look upon God we will see He has been looking for us.

(Rev. 1:14) o When Jesus stoodbefore John with eyes of fire, John fell like a dead man, as we read in Revelation1:17-18. o There are two practicalapplications to Jesus’ eyes of fire: the more we grow in the revelation of His eyes of fire, we grow in the fear of God, but we also mature everything. The implication of understanding this, even a little, really affects the waywe relate to God in a very powerful way. The more I understand that more we understand this, the strongeror the more mature my intimacy with God is. We see that He sees us, that He feels what we feel, that His eyes are always on us, that we move His heart. And He moves our heart as well. The connectionis in the knowledge ofHis eyes being on us. • THE OMNISCIENCE OF JESUS & THE PURIFYING POWER OF HIS EYES o Jesus is omniscient, meaning He possessesallknowledge. Everything there is

His eyes of fire penetrate to the core reality and the truth of everything that exists. He sees everything that is goodand everything that is evil, without any distortion at all. He sees behind the scenesand below the surface. o The implication is that He has no distortion of truth, none whatsoever. He has no wrong information; human judge, even though he may try his bestto judge impartially, is affected by his own dysfunctions as a human, his own woundings, his own biases, his the knowledge ofJesus;not even the smallestimplication FRCC Harp & BowlMinistry — Revelation1: The Beauty of Jesus REVELATION 1:14b Forerunner Christian Church www.forerunner.cc 2 escapesHis knowledge. He sees the whole thing. Jesus takes carefulnotice of everything and everyone, good and bad. o Knowing this equips us to walk in the fearof God and in intimacy. o Fire is not only pure, it also purifies in the natural realm. When there is any defilement in metal, you put it through fire and it becomes purified. If there’s defilement in water, you put it through fire, pure, but they purify us. • PSALM 139 – DAVID’S SECRET TO CONSISTENTLOVE o David is speaking in Psalm139. This is one of the secrets ofDavid’s life: David understood that the Lord’s eyes were on him. Truly this is one of the greatsecrets ofthe power of his consistentlove. • 38. —“it is high,” he says, “I can’t even get hold of thi one thing we ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to us is to show us what He sees, and to show us the implications of what He knows. David said, “It is too wonderful; it is awesome. The implications are wonderful. I can’t get hold of the fullness of it,” but, Beloved, we are on the journey to understand these eyes of fire. o What Jesus thinks about us is precious to us if we get our minds around it. 17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! 18 If I should count them, they would be more in number has so many thoughts about you. Did you know that Jesus has more thoughts about you than the number of grains of sand on the seashore?Davidgrasped that. He didn’t grasp the fullness of it, but he had a fundamental revelation of steady in our efforts to love God, because so oftenin our efforts we’re coming the powerof that, because he saw that God understoodthe ground he was gaining. One of our big challenges is that our labors are small. We do our little service and we’re reaching to love God, but it doesn’t seemlike we get very far. So our increase looks reallysmall and sometimes not at all. But the Lord sees the truth about what is in your heart in the goodway, not just in the bad away. • THERE IS NO CREATURE HIDDEN There is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are nakedand open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. (Heb. 4:13) o All things are naked, meaning He sees the behind-the-scenes truth of every situation in life. Nothing can be maskedor altered. The truth of it cannotbe hidden from Him. He sees it as it is with no covering. o It is Him to whom we give an account. We give an accountof our life to a man who is fully God and fully Man. His name is Jesus. • THE FEAR OF GOD IN JESUS’FIERY GAZE o His eyes see our failure. This produces the fearof God in us. The fearof God is the awarenessthat God sees everything. The more I’m aware He sees everything, the more I have the fear of God in my heart, and the more I am carefu If you know He sees youand that it matters to Him, then it matters to you. things matter to Him, even the small reaches ofmy heart when I say, “Lord, I

ForHe is like a refiner’s fire FRCC Harp & BowlMinistry — Revelation1: The Beauty of Jesus REVELATION 1:14b Forerunner Christian Church www.forerunner.cc 4 And like launderers’ soap. (Malachi3:2) o In Malachi3:2, the prophet Malachilinks purity with fire, because fire purifies. It purifies metal; it purifies water;it purifies various elements. o Malachi3 is about the end times. Of course the principle of the refiner’s fire is true throughout history, but when Jesus reveals His glory, it says in Malachi3 that He—meaning the Messiah—willmanifestit as a refiner’s fire. o The refiner’s fire isn’t just a negative. It’s not just, “Ouch, that hurts.” You hear people say, “I’m going through the fire... ouch!” There is an “ouch!” dimension to the fire, but there is a purifying and impartation dimension to the fire, too. • THE REMEMBRANCE OF HIS EYES o In His eyes He sees and remembers everything we do in love towards Him, even the weak love we show Him. o The fact that He sees andremembers what we do makes every single day relevant. It makes every hour of every day relevant. Nothing is wasted. No hour is boring when we understand that He sees andremembers even the small giving of our selfto Him, even the small offerings of love. They move His heart. This makes every day important, whether anyone else sees whatyou’re doing as important or not. o The very fact that He sees and remembers crowns your life with glory. He sees youright now. The reaching of your heart moves Him and He records it. o You will never have a day that is

This is one aspectof walking in intimacy with Him, knowing that He is with us in all that causes us pain and struggle. • THE PRAISE THAT COMES FROM GOD “... the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the heart. Then each reveals the godly counsels of your heart, the longings and the setting of your heart to do right, He will affirm you. He will praise you, which means that He will point it out in an affirming way. I think this will be the most surprising brokenness that they don’t have any esteemfor the love they have. They don’t count the love; all they do is count the failure. They count what comes up short and don’t esteemthe setting of their heart, but the Lord does and it your character. He sees the cry to grow in greater love. He sees every movement of your heart to love Him. o THE SUBTLE STIRRINGS OF OUR the Spirit. When you did that, whether today or yesterday, you said, “Oh Lord, this is not what I want.” The Lord says, “Oh, that touches Me.” He sees that movement of your heart and records it in His book. Do you know the way you move Him? Do you know that every time you repent of compromise, it moves Him and He records it in His book? Even though they have repented, they feellike it’s more appropriate to put themselves on probation for at leasta few days. They feellike they ought to feelmiserable for a while after all they did. If they feel miserable for a few days or a few weeks, then it balances the score out. That is absolutely bad doctrine; it’s weakness, then we learn to repent when we have failed, call it “sin,” declare war on it, and stand back before the Lord, ready to run towards Him. When we do that, we open our spirit in confidence insteadof drawing back in shame. That is what the devil wants us to do. He wants us to close our spirit and think, “I am so bad. I am so bad...” The Lord says, “Lift your chin up and look Me in the eyes. Let’s talk. I love you. I have alreadyforgiven you. Run towards Me. Do you not see how I feel? Do you not know what I see whenI see you?” • THE DAY WILL REVEAL OUR WORKS 11 Forno other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 eachone’s work will become clear;for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealedby fire; and the fire will testeachone’s work, of what sort it is. (1 Cor 3:11-13)o This is talking about their life work and all their acts of service. The fire of Jesus’eyes is testing it. o Some people get the wrong idea that eachman’s work is testedby how big the work was or how famous they became through the work. The shocking thing is that on that day “the work will become clear,” andit will be clearhow important the little things are to Jesus. Many people can’t see with clarity the importance of what they’re doing. The Lord says, “Iwrite it all in My book. All of that will become clearand evident on that day.” o I think what will shock us is how important and how big the little things are. You will receive a reward; your life will be revealed. o Many people have the image that what is big is good. Big canbe good, if it is the will of God, but remember that 99.9 percentof the Body of Christ in all of history has only done small things. That is the will of God, and that is good. They will be rewarded in a very surprising, very big

He doesn’t see the smallness of it and say, “Oh, forgetit; it’s only a small thing.” His eyes of fire see the truth of it. o “Godis not unjust to forgetany of our work.” This includes the love you show towards Him when you serve FRCC Harp & BowlMinistry — Revelation1: The Beauty of Jesus REVELATION 1:14b Forerunner Christian Church www.forerunner.cc 6 others. Jesus said, “Assuredly I sayto you, if you give a cup of coldwater, I will never forgetthe smallestdeed that you do” (Mt. 10:42, paraphrased). • THE FREEDOM OF KNOWING THAT HE SEES o When we understand that He sees, then we are not compelled to make sure everyone else sees. The more I understand that He sees, the less I’m compelledto tell you all that I’m doing. On the other hand, when I don’t think that He sees, thenI have to make sure you see. o When we know that He sees, then we don’t have anything to prove because it’s already being proven before Him. This is such liberty. It’s a liberating feeling to know that it’s already been proved in the secretplace. Notjust your private prayer life, but also the secretthings you do in service have already been manifest to Him. o We don’t have to make sure everyone knows, because He knows. This gives us power in our spirit. • THE GREATNESSREFLECTED IN HIS EYES o He sees ourgreatness. The Lord sees your greatnessfar more than you do. He sees who you are to Him and what you’re going to be. He sees thatvery clearly right now. o When we see
  • 43. what He sees,it affects us. He knows our future. He knows where we’re going. That gives us direction and hope. • THE FIRE OF GOD’S THRONE o God’s throne is ablaze with fire. Everything around God is ablaze with fire. It’s not surprising to us that His eyes are full of fire, because it’s all around Him. There is a river of fire coming out of His throne. There is a sea of glass before the throne in Revelation4, filled with flaming fire. Seraphim are high-ranking angels;the word seraphim means “burning ones.” o Jesus’eyes offire are emphasized three times in the book of Revelation. o God’s fire does two things. Firstly, it imparts the good, the holy love of God. Secondly, it also removes that which is unholy, that which hinders love. Therefore, His fire, the purity in His eyes, imparts the goodand removes the bad. o This isn’t just figurative that His eyes are like fire. It is part of the reality of His personhood. restrained and diminished when revealing himself to a human being. So He can appearto you without His glory being fully manifest, but when His full glory is being fully revealedHis eyes are like fire. o The Scriptures tell us often to seek His face, but when we seek His face we encounterHis eyes. Though in our lives right now we cannot see His face in the direct sense, we are gazing at His face. I tell you, His eyes are like fire. It is in that posture that He imparts to us goodthings, the love of God. It is in that posture that He empowers us to remove the things that hinder love in our life. • THE DESIRE IN THE FIRE OF HIS EYES o His eyes of fire reveal His desire. In His eyes of fire there is desire that warms and tenderizes us. In His eyes we understand that He sees our failure, and this causesus to walk in the fear of God. We also understand that He sees our longings to love Him. • 44. In Luke 11, the words of Jesus are recorded, “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Insteadthey put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy (generous), your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy (stingy), your whole body will be full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.” Our eyes are organs that soak in what we chooseto look at. If we fill our vision with things of this world, with wickednessandlust, with hatred and sin, then we fill our selves up with darkness. But the eyes are also a reflectionback to the world of our souls. When our souls are filled with the spirit, a light shines out from us. A light of joy, a light of happiness and generosity, ofgiving and of peace. When we look around us at the world today we see the effects of sin. We see a living Babylon and lots of darkness. This reminds of the words of Leonard Sweetin his book AquaChurch 2.0:Piloting your Church in Today’s Fluid Culture (pg 58) “Light illumines the darkness. If there’s darkness, the blame should be attachedwhere it belongs;not to the world that is dark but to the church, which is failing to provide the light.” The answerto the darkness in the world is not going to be found in the darkness. It is only going to be found by the powerof the Holy Spirit within the called, chosenand faithful followers ofChrist. It is only through shining that light that darkness is set back. John notes in our passagetodaythat: Christ’s eyes are like blazing fire. Let’s reflect that light! My Answers:
  • 45. 9. Jesus – Theyare attributes of Him and also point to His eternal place as a person of the trinity, not only at creationbut active in it and active in everything since – He holds the stars in His hand. 10. His name is the Word of God. He is unique. His name is truly unlike any name. His name is that of God, formed into a word to be pronounced and proclaimed by all mankind. His blazing eyes tell me he sees andknows all and rage burns behind that vision. His double edged swordis Him, the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edgedsword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Heb 4:12 11. I will read and learn His Word and call on Him and use it everyday, on my tongue and thoughts. I will quit attempting to hide from Him (a pointless act). I will recognize that He is alive and active and He alone is judge https://thenotesaregood.com/2016/03/26/24-4-revelation-eyes-like-blazing-fire/ Revelation19:12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. • 46. His eyes were as a flame of fire,.... Which denotes the perspicuity and penetration of them, the omniscience ofChrist to look into and discoverthe secretmachinations, schemes, anddevices of his enemies againsthis people, and his exercise ofit in favour of them, his eyes, like a flame of fire, running to and fro on their behalf; and also this may signify the fierceness ofhis anger againstthe enemies of his people, the eyes of his glory being provokedby their cruelty and wickedness;and likewise the suddenness of their destruction, and the inevitableness ofit. And on his head were many crowns;for he has not only a crown, as the Creatorand Governorof the universe, in right of nature, but he has one which his Father has put upon his head, when he sethim as King over his holy hill of Zion, Psalm21:3 and there is another which his mother, the church, crownedhim with in the day of his espousals, Song ofSolomon3:11 and besides these, every believer puts a crownon his head, gives him the glory of their salvation, and all of them casttheir crowns at his feet: to which may be added, that the crowns ofall the kings of the earth are his; they reign by him, and are accountable to him. This part of the description may be expressive of that all power in heaven and earth, given to Christ at his resurrection, and exercisedby him ever since; and particularly of the extensiveness ofhis kingdom at the time this vision refers to, when the kingdoms of this world shall be his, Revelation11:15 for this vision, and the seventh trumpet, are contemporary; and it may be a symbol of the many victories obtained by him, and of the lastand closing one that should now be obtained by him. And he had a name written that no man knew but he himself; which seems to be his name, the Son of God, as the unknown name of the overcomer, in Revelation2:17 is a child of God; and the sense is, that his divine nature, in which he is the Son of God, is incomprehensible, and that the begetting or generationof him, as such, is ineffable, Proverbs 30:4 and that without a divine revelation the name itself could not be known; or it could not be known that God had a Son, and that Christ is he, and bears that name, Matthew 11:27 or else his name Immanuel. The incarnate God may be intended, which is a secretand wonderful name, and contains in it, without controversy, a greatmystery, which cannot be comprehended by finite minds; or his name, ,si taht ;"nettirw" eb ot dias si eman sihT .6:9 haiasI,"terces ,lufrednow" ,‫פלא‬
  • 47. in the Scriptures of truth, in which it is revealedthat Christ is the Son of God, and Immanuel. In Revelation19:16 the name of King of kings, &c. is said to be written on his vesture, and on his thigh; and the Ethiopic version makes this to be written on his crownor diadem, reading the words thus; "and upon his head a crown, and there was written in his diadem a name, and no man knew it, but he himself only"; as the high priest had "holiness to the Lord" written on his mitre. The Syriac version inserts a clause betweenthe two last, "having names written", and then follows, "and a name written", &c. and so the Complutensian edition. Barnes'Notes on the Bible His eyes were as a flame of fire - See the notes on Revelation1:14. And on his head were many crowns - Many diadems, indicative of his universal reign. It is not said how these were worn or arranged on his head - perhaps the various diadems worn by kings were in some waywreathed into one. And he had a name written - That is, probably on the frontlet of this compound diadem. Compare the notes on Revelation13:1; Revelation14:1. That no man knew but he himself - See the notes on Revelation2:17. This cannot here mean that no one could read the name, but the idea is, that no one but himself could fully understand its import. It involved a depth of meaning, and a degree of sacredness, and a relation to the Father, which he alone could apprehend in its true import. This is true of the name here designated - “the Word of God” - the “Logos” -Λόγος Logosandit is true of all the names which he bears. See Matthew 11:27. Compare a quotation from Dr. Buchanan in the Asiatic Researches, vol. 1, vi. p. 264, as quoted by Rosenmuller, Morgenland, in loco. Clarke's Notes onthe Bible
  • 48. His eyes were as a flame of fire - To denote the piercing and all-penetrating nature of his wisdom. On his head were many crowns - To denote the multitude of his conquests, and the extent of his dominion. A name written, that no man knew - This is a reference to what the rabbins call the shem hammephorash, or tetragrammaton, ‫הוהי‬ Yhvh ; or what we call Jehovah. This name the Jews neverattempt to pronounce: when they meet with it in the Bible, they read ‫ינדא‬ Adonai for it; but, to a man, they all declare that no man can pronounce it; and that the true pronunciation has been lost, at leastsince the Babylonish captivity; and that God alone knows its true interpretation and pronunciation. This, therefore, is the name which no man knew but he himself. Revelation1:14 ESV The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, Revelation2:18 - John repeats his description of Jesus, saying he has eyes of fire and feet of brass. Response:In the Bible darkenedeyes representunseeing (Romans 11:10)so the symbolism here applies to Jesus'blazing eyes that see everything that may bring figurative darkness to the congregation.
  • 49. No evidence exists indicating that the people of Bible times could harden pure copper by tempering, though they could harden the cutting edge of tools by cold hammering. There is evidence that bronze, a copper and tin alloy of between2 to 18 percenttin was available. The modern day version of brass, which is an alloy of copper and zinc was unknown it Bible times, but the "brass" ofthe time of the KJV applied to any alloy of copper. Modern translations will use the term copper. Feetare symbolic in the Bible as representing a persons inclination; the path one takes as being goodor bad. Tweet Share 1 Buffer Email 38 Shares This post is a 8 min read “His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.” (Revelation1:14,) “I have made you a tester of metals among my people, that you may know and test their ways. (Jeremiah6:27, ESV) The conceptof Jesus’s eyes offire mentioned when the apostle John stood before Him in his vision on the island of Patmos really fascinates me lately. John was the one who knew Jesus the most intimately of the inner twelve and the only one who remained to witness His death on the cross when the others scattered. He often referred to himself as the one Jesus lovedyet in this moment when Jesus revealedHimself to him, he still fell at his feet as though dead (Rev 1:17). Jesus is a tester of our hearts An assayeris someone who tests metals, including ore, for their components and judges the value or worth of the metal basedon its purity of composition. The method is accomplishedby using a combination of intense heat, dry reagents orfluxes, and specialvessels thathelp separate the precious metals from the restof the extraneous material, or dross.
  • 52. King Jesus doesn’tmerely examine our hearts, but He tests and evaluates our true spiritual condition and then brings His fire to effecta greaterpurity and usefulness in our lives. He sees through everything in the same way that fire penetrates metal. His eyes of fire penetrate to the core reality and the truth of everything that exists. He sees everything that is goodand everything that is bad, without any bias or clouded judgment. He sees behind the scenesand below the surface. Nothing in all creationis hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to Whom we must give account(see Hebrews 4:13). When the dross is removed from the precious metal, be it goldor silver, then the vesselis ready to use. When the tree is pruned, it can produce more fruit; when the wheatis separatedfrom the chaff, then the wheatis ready to use. John answeredthem all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. (Luke 3:16) How many of us in our charismatic circles love that verse? How many messages andwritings have we heard on this aspectof receiving the Holy Spirit and being baptized in fire? Let’s not forget to read the next verse: His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clearhis threshing floor and to gather the wheatinto his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” (v. 17, emphasis mine) Jesus desires intimacy with us. He longs for a people who intimately know Him face to face. But in order to getcloserto Him, those eyes of fire are going to test the pure motives of our heart and let us know that He is committed to burning up the chaff in our lives. He will remove the dross, for it’s impossible to get closerto the heat source without things getting brought to the surface in our lives and removed. Mike Bickle states in a messageon this subject and passage:
  • 53. The more I understand that His eyes are on me, the more I walk in the fear of God, and, secondly, the stronger or the more mature my intimacy with God is. So the two practicalapplications are, we grow in the fearof God by the revelation of His eyes of fire, but we also mature in our intimacy with God. We see that He sees us; that He feels what we feel;that His eyes are always on us; that we move His heart. He moves our heart as well. The connectionis the knowledge ofHis eyes being on us. 1 Jesus is not testing us because He wants to punish us, but the opposite:He wants to make us better. He wants to purify us, and often times the way he does it is through trials and tribulations. We must not neglectto understand the ways of the Lord, as many forgetthat it’s His love for us that allows us to suffer for times and be prepared for His presence. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (James 4:8) But the word of God also says a fire goes before Him (Psalm 97:3). As we draw near to Him, the fire touches our lives. It touches our thoughts, it touches our motives, it purifies our minds. God knows we won’t be ready for His face when we seek Him, until we’ve been purified by His fire. For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. (Deuteronomy 4:24) It was only recently that I noticedfor the first time that this verse in the Old Testamentmentions God’s jealousyin the same sentence as mentioning that He’s an all consuming fire. But God’s jealousyis not the same as ours. He’s not insecure or incapacitatedby immature thoughts in his jealousylike we our in our idea and conceptof it. His is a jealous love for us. And it’s in our best interest, out of his love for us, that He brings the winnowing fork to the threshing floor of our lives. Jesus tests us with his eyes of fire “…that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Ephesians 6:13). Purification of the Life of Zion I’ve recently been re-reading the book The Fire Of DelayedAnswers By Bob Sorge when I began making my notes for this post. In the first chapter he brings up the very same passageandconcepts about the eyes of fire as I’d been planning on writing, but I came across something evenmore interesting that I best just quote for our purposes:
  • 54. “Gehenna was a place outside Jerusalemwhere King Josiah, in his godly reforms destroyedthe altars of idolatry. It became a place where refuse was burned. It was the city’s incinerator. The purpose of Gehenna was the purification of the life of the city. In time, Gehenna came to be the name for the fire of hell. Gehenna (hell) is set ablaze by the holiness of God. Fire destroys the perishable and perfects that which is imperishable.” “Unless this holy fire burns within you now, bringing you to purity and peace, then you will have no escape fromthe fire of Gehenna which consumes forever.”2 Jesus saidin Mark 9:47 we’d all be salted with fire. Salt is for retaining flavor, or purifying. Psalm 104:4 states that God makes His ministers a flame of fire, and Daniel12:10 mentions that “many shall be purified and made white.” If we’re going to be a people after God’s heart who know Him intimately as ones who see Him face to face, then there’s no escaping the fire in His eyes! Intimacy with God will result in righteousness and holiness pervading our lives. It’s impossible for the fire not to have a purifying effect. To quote Sorge again: When hypocrites and the half-hearted candwell in our midst without being convictedor made uncomfortable, then something’s wrong. God intends for His fire to so envelope the localchurch that hypocrites will not be able to stay, and the devout will not be able to remain unchanged.3 When a people after God’s heart are close to Him, it will result in the fire on a corporate level, and changedlives. Eyes Like Doves His eyes are like doves beside streams of water, bathed in milk, sitting beside a full pool. (Song of Solomon5:12) As a dove does not have peripheral vision, so is the BelovedJesus – He has complete singleness ofvision and cannot be distracted by anything that is unpleasing to his Father. His eyes are loyal to God and to us, His Bride. His eyes also speak ofHis ability to see and discern everything; he has perfect insight into every area of our lives and His perspective is absolutely pure. The phrase “bathed in milk” speaks ofthat which is white and nourishing, and speaks ofthe Lord’s purity of discernment. This basically speaksofGod’s ability and greatskill to see perfectlyeverything about our lives, and
  • 55. interprets everything about our lives through the cleannessofHis own heart because His motives are always pure. He always knows whatfire to put us through at what stage of our lives, and preciselyhow much we need. He’s gentle, yet convicting. The same Jesus whom all it took was one look at Peterafter he betrayed him and it cut to the heart and made him run and weepthat he denied the Lord. Yet, when Jesus restoredhim, this is the same man who boldly proclaimed the Gospeland 3000 were convertedat Pentecost. The deeperthe piercing of His eyes, the deeper a work done in our hearts.
