After a week of three mass shootings, Jesus' teaching on the Problem of Evil is timely. In Luke 13 he briefly addresses the Problem of Intentional Evil and the Problem of Natural (Random) Evil. His answer is, at first unsatisfying until we understand the strategy behind his simple counsel and see its true profundity.

Surprised to see an empty seat at the super bowl stadium, a diehard fan remarked about it to a man sitting nearby. “It was my wife’s,” the man explained, “But she died.” “Oh! I’m very sorry to hear that,” said the man. “Yet I’m really surprised that another relative, or friend, didn’t jump at the chance to take the seat reserved for her.” “Beats me,” he said. “They all insisted on going to the funeral.”

Yes, let us pray for the salvation of all of those who live in that totalitarian darkness—pray they will discover the joy of knowing God. But until they do, let us be aware that while they preach the supremacy of the State, declare its omnipotence over individual man, and predict its eventual domination of all peoples on the earth, they are the focus of evil in the modern world .... So, in your discussions of the nuclear freeze proposals, I urge you to beware the temptation of pride—the temptation of blithely declaring yourselves above it all and label both sides equally at fault, to ignore the facts of history and the aggressive impulses of an evil empire, to simply call the arms race a giant misunderstanding and thereby remove yourself from the struggle between right and wrong and good and evil.
In his January 2002 State of the Union address, referring to North Korea, Iran and Iraq, President George W. Bush said,
“States like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world.”
John Bradshaw
“The idea of evil is always subject to denial as a coping mechanism.”

At least three people were killed, including two children, and 12 others wounded in a shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California after a suspect wearing tactical gear and armed with a military-style rifle opened fire. The 19-year old shooter and white supremacist was killed by police.

Systematically herded into enclosed areas and picked off like fish in a barrel.
A heroic 63-year-old, Robert Johnson, threw himself into the path of bullets in order to save his wife and granddaughter.
Andre Anchondo died shielding his wife, who died shielding their baby. The baby survived.
The shooter walked up to police and proudly declared, “I’m the shooter.” He too was motivated by racial hatred.
And then, just one day later, in Dayton, Ohio’s Entertainment District, a lone gunman with a rifle with a magazine which held 100 rounds, killed 9 people in 30 seconds before he was taken down by police.

But unless you repent…
13 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

Some Practical Steps
Avoid the pitfalls of fear and hatred.
“It is in this evil world we must stand strong. It is in this madness we must think soundly. It's amid these dangers our hearts must neither melt nor harden. It's here & now we who follow Jesus must be brave & bold in love & truth, defending the defenseless & not the indefensible.”
Some Practical Steps
2. Leave no room for racism in your heart.
Yes, in the eyes of a killer the carnage in Walmart may have been against a particular group of people. But in reality, his action was against God who gives us the splendor of our distinctives, even as he calls us to a unity in being image bearers of God himself.
Some Practical Steps
3. Mourn with those who mourn.
Franklin Graham:
“… the number of victims of the mass shootings is much higher than the headlines reveal, because each mother, each father, each sister and brother, each wife and husband, is also a victim—a victim of the heinous and senseless evil unleashed by two murderous gunmen.
Their loved ones have been stolen from them. As we mourn with these families and communities, let’s continue to sincerely lift them up in prayer before the Lord. He is the only one who can comfort and wholly heal their broken hearts.”

4. Don’t miss Jesus’ twice repeated call to personal repentance.
Eric Metaxas
The spirit of mass-murder is the spirit of anti-Christ. Instead of pointing fingers at each other & sharing in that foul spirit, let us turn to God in repentance. Can it be that He has allowed this evil so that we will return to Him in prayer & repentance?
