Servant Leadership Principles - Fostering a Culture of AgilityLen Lagestee
The phrase “servant leadership” is frequently used when current leadership styles (typically command-and-control) clash with an emerging culture of empowerment and self-organization. “We need our leaders to embody servant leadership” is a comment I recently heard. But what is servant leadership? Do people really know what they are asking for?
Let's take a look at a few of the principles from the book Servant Leadership by Robert Greenleaf.

My Parents and Brothers – Winning the parent lottery, giving and caring, PhD and RN, principal brother, teacher brother, both wives are teachers. Growing up listening to Harry Wong audio tapes in the car, reading Kozol before college, discussions around inequity at the dinner table,
Growing up in Vegas – Born and raised. I learned a lot from growing up in a city where other’s misfortune is key to the economy.
Brown v. Board – Many of my childhood friends incarcerated or dead.
Struggling with School – I hated school almost from Go.
The School that Saved Me - Art, Four Years of Theatre, Learned to Play Guitar, Met My Wife
University of Nevada - Nevada Humane Society - Food Not Bombs - Punk Bands and how this led me to education.
Working in Legislature: Charter Schools Meet the Internet Boom
The School I Helped Create
What I believe about schools - Adults carry the burden of ensuring the success of all children. We do this by:Demonstrating personal humility and placing the needs of children above our ownUsing encouraging and supportive languageFocusing on the gifts and talents of all childrenRecognizing that although the educational system may have worked for us personally many children struggle within this systemAnd standing up for our children as if they were our own.Instructionally:Inquiry – All children ask questions about their topic that will allow them to fully understand.Research – Children research topics in depth using credible resourcesCollaboration – Children collaborate with classmates and others to continue their spectrum of learningPresentation – Students convey their thoughts, ideas, and findings through their presentationsReflection – Students reflect on the work, along with the successes and failures and see what they can do to improve on future work. And that song is now in your head.
Michelle Alexander – The New Jim CrowAlan Watts – This is It, It’s All Process because the end point is the same for everyoneFred Rogers – Sheer belief in children, their worth and their power.Helen Keller – All that she overcame, disability advocate, avowed socialist and wrote extensively against war in her life time. Nothing about us without us.Howard Zinn – Reflective about his young life and privilege, question everything about the status quo, work to change it. You can’t be neutral on a moving train.Malcolm X – When something is important enough to you don’t mince words. By any means necessary. Keep your mouth open no matter the cost.Jonathan Kozol – What living your advocacy looks like. When asking questions about what to do for a child I ask myself what would Kozol do.
My Wife – We’ve been together since 1993. Neither of her parents graduated from high school. Both brilliant people. Many of my preconceptions about high school dropouts have been shattered by them and several of my personal friends who haven’tfinishedhighschool. First collegegraduate in herfamily. English teachercompleted classes for masters in ABA. Scrapbooking. So smart.
Owen – 9. Has polymicrogyria, epilsy, maybe autism, nonverbal, g-tube, goes on and on. An amazing child in a not so amazing body.
Rejection and Lessons Learned – Welfare system the people I met there – Patience from doctor’s offices to dealing with the system to dealing with him – Advocacy – Ego check, change the diaper on your 9 year-old. This is one of more than a dozen rejection letters we have received from schools saying that they do not want to deal with my child. If a child comes to our school and I push to let them in this is a big part of the reason why.

The Goatee – Not sure that I’ve got 20 seconds to fill on this thing but I was looking for a job in Vancouver or Denver for 18 months and cut it off every time before my DPS interview and didn’t have time to cut it off before this one. It’s silly and just one of many many bad decisions. It could be gone tomorrow. I may have it for the next 30 years.
PhD Program – Do you guys know how to tell who the PhD student at a party is? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you. Special Education, use of technology specifically blended learning to end the segregation of children with severe needs. Also, working on the policy end around school choice and ensuring that children with severe disabilities have the same ability to chose. Let’s face it, any school that has the Marcus Garvey Center for Black Cultural Education and the Cesar Chavez Cultural Center is probably the right place for me even if I didn’t know it was in Greeley when I applied.
