Rousseau was a major influence on the French Revolution due to works like his Social Contract which undermined the old regime. His view of human nature was that people are inherently good but corrupted by society and its institutions. He believed people could regain their natural goodness by returning to a state of nature guided by reason and conscience, not pride or artificial desires. For Rousseau, true freedom and morality come from identifying one's will with the general will of the community through participation in a just social contract.
