3. The basics – IF…
• If everyone raises their hand, I will do 5 jumping jacks
• If two people stand up – I will high-five them
• If nobody stands up, and not everyone raises their hands, I will have
to come up with new examples…
4. The importance of punctuation
• For the same reason that punctuation is important in English it is
important that when programming we follow proper usage of things
like ; . ( ) and {}. Without punctuation or logic the computer, like
people, could get very confused regarding what you’re trying to say.
• Or as they – commas save lives: “Let’s eat Grandpa!”
5. Punctuation Continued
• ; - The semi-colon means end of statement. As useful and common as
a period (.) in standard English.
• . – A period separates a variable from a function
• Ex: str.trim(); str.replace(“a”,”b”)
• ( ) – Parenthesis group an expression who’s value will be assessed, ex:
(a = 2)
• { } – Curly braces group a chunk of code
